On Friday night, you slide under the covers, smiling in anticipation. Now you can finally catch up on your sleep. Except you cant. When you open your eyes Saturday morning, its still early. If this were a weekday, youd be up before your alarm. So whats the deal? We hate to break it to you, but youve pretty much done this to yourself. Your body is very good at recognizing patterns and adjusting accordingly. If youve got a 9-to-5 job, youre getting up early five days a week. This effectively sets your body clock to wake you at a certain time each day. You can shut off your alarm clock, but your body clock will just keep ticking. Theres another reason that you probably dont want to think about: Youre just not as young as you used to be. We need less sleep as we get older. Babies need between 16 and 20 hours. Teenagers should (but often dont) get nine hours a night. Younger and middle-aged adults need eight. In general, the older you get, the harder it is to snooze the day away. Even if you do manage to sleep in, you may never fully catch up on your sleep. If your body needs eight hours every night and you only get six or seven from Monday to Friday, youd have to sleep an extra five to ten hours on Saturday to make it up. And experts say even that may not be enough. The bottom line: Sleep when you can, and enjoy those extra weekend morning hours. Who doesnt want a longer weekend?24What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 1?A. You know that you will oversleep on Saturday morning.B. You neednt get up early on Saturday morning, so you will have a better sleep.C. Since you dont work on Saturday, you neednt go to sleep as usual.D. You know that even though you neednt get up early on Saturday morning, you will wake as usual.25What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A. If you have a 9-to-5 job, you are likely to develop a flexible body clock.B. Once you have set your body clock, it is not easy to change it.C. The author will not break the pattern, but you will do it yourself.D. If you adjust your body clock accordingly, you are healthy.26Which of the following is the reason why you cant sleep in on weekends?A. You are not willing to admit that you are old.B. You need to relax on the weekend.C. Your body clock still works on weekends.D. You can never get enough sleep.27Which is the best title of the passage?A. Why cant I sleep in on weekends anymore?B. Why cant I catch up on my sleep?C. How to turn off my body clock on Saturdays?D. How to get more sleep on Saturday mornings?C This is a time of year when high school students and their families are thinking hard about college. As seniors, juniors, and parents identify their top choices, discussions typically focus on the college itself. Is the institution small or large? How strong are the academics? What is the social life like? Do I like the campus? Such considerations are important, but they can cover the all-important question:Where will these college years lead? Applicants should think seriously about which college on their list can best prepare them for the real world. They should look for campuses that offer well-structured programs to help them form a direction for their lives and develop the capacity to take steps along that path. One of the most striking recent phenomena about college graduates in America has been the “boomerang” student: the young person who goes away to college, has a great experience, graduates, and then moves back home for a year or two to figure out what to do with his or her life. This pattern has left many graduates and their families wondering whether it makes sense to spend four or more years at college, often at great expense, and finish with no clear sense of who they are or what they want to do next. The trend points to one of the great shortcomings of many of our nations leading colleges and universities. Structured opportunities to think about life after graduation are rare. The formal curriculum(课程) focuses almost universally on the academic disciplines(学术科目) of the arts and sciences. Advising on how various majors connect to pathways into the workplace is typically haphazard (没有条理的). Career planning offices are often shorthanded and unimportant to college life. It doesnt need to be this way, and in recent years some of the countrys top colleges have enriched their academic offerings with opportunities for students to gain real-world experiences.28. According to the author, what do typical discussions on college choices ignore?A. The function of college education in employment.B. The difficulty in finding jobs after graduation.C. High school students interests.D. The academics of college.29. Which accounts for the “trend” mentioned in the text?A. Students failing to behave themselves.B. Parents overprotecting their children.C. Students choosing majors blindly.D. Schools lacking proper guidance.30. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?A. Recipes for academic achievements.B. Good academic programs in college.C. Academic tips for college students.D. Disadvantages of present college course.31. What is the best title for the text?A. A good way to choose a college.B. A new trend in top colleges.C. Connect subjects with life beyond college.D. Make college one of lifes richest experiences.DThe meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙)with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a persons needs. Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what maybe implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection. Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic udner discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority. Nurses and other care-geivers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be expericencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patients silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈) value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.32. What does the author say about silence in conversations?A. It implies anger.B. It promotes friendship.C. It is culture-specific.D. It is content-based.33. Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?A. The Chinese.B. The French. C. The Mexicans. D. The Russians.34. What does the author advise nurses to do about silence?A. Let it continue as the patient pleases.B. Break it while treating patients.C. Evaluate its harm to patients.D. Make use of its healing effects.35. What may be the best title for the text?A. Sound and SilenceB. What It Means to Be SilentC. Silence to Native AmericansD. Then, how can we know what the future will look like? 36 The world has changed a lot in the last 150 years, but we humans are driven by the same basic needs as we were 150 years ago, such as food, sleep, the feeling of being appreciated and loved. 37 No. In addition, generally speaking, the inventions for the last 150 years have been a human effort for freedom and communication, to be able to get in control of the time and world. Since there is still much to do in this area, this will be the focus at least for the next 150 years. But why do we need to predict the future? Predicting the future is important for two reasons. First we need to start to think about what kind of future wed like for ourselves and to pass on to the next generation. 38 How about the virtual worlds? It might be possible in the future to experience the sand between your toes, and hear the waves, just lying in your bed at home. 39 So, even if a great invention is there for an affordable price, itll never take the place of the common experience if its not real. 40 What well see in the next 50 years is the transition(过渡) from an oil-dependent society to a new society.
