exhibition that has served a number of purposes since its inception The first fair the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Continents was held in 1851 in Hyde Park London The fair with the lofty name functioned as a platform for nations to showcase their innovations in science and technology Modern marvels ranged from the first public toilet to a precursor to the modern day fax machine but the one creation that literally overshadowed everything else was the Crystal Palace a greenhouse like structure fabricated from modular cast iron and glass that housed the entire American Centennial Exhibition was the first official world s fair held in the U S Among the exhibits was this extraordinary technical marvel a 1 500 horsepower Corliss steam engine which powered all the exhibits at the fair It was the centerpiece of the opening festivities illustrated above during which it was turned on by then President Ulysses S Grant Photos A Brief History of World s Fairs nation s history the centennial of the storming of the Bastille an event that has traditionally represented the start of the French Revolution A replica of the infamous prison was featured at the fair but the most revolutionary exhibit was a little project by engineer Gustave Eiffel At 324 m 1 063 ft La Tour Eiffel the Eiffel Tower was the tallest standing structure in the world upon its completion 10 BETTMANN CORBIS NEXT BACK Chicago 1893 Ferris Wheel Although Christopher Columbus never set foot in the Windy City the World s Columbian Exposition was held in Chicago to mark the 400th anniversary of his arrival in the New World The expo was notable for being the debut of the Ferris wheel Designed and built by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr the wheel measured 804 m 264 feet tall and held 36 completion of the Panama Canal the Panama Pacific International Exposition was regarded as something much more its opening in 1915 was heralded as a sign that San Francisco which had been virtually destroyed in the earthquake and fire of 1906 had returned to life The centerpiece of the fair was the Tower of Jewels a 433 ft tall 132 m structure adorned with more than 100 000 Austrian glass fragments called nova gems In hues ranging from yellow to aquamarine the gems glittered in the sunlight by day and were illuminated by floodlights and spotlights at night Photos A Brief History of Park in New York City signified a shift from the fair s traditional role of featuring technological advancements to that of a cultural exchange between nations The Big Apple adopted the slogan Dawn of a New Day for its first fair its purpose being to show visitors the world of tomorrow At the center of the fair were two Modernist structures known as the Trylon and the Perisphere The Trylon Montreal 1967 National Geometry Countries that choose to participate in a World s Fair erect a pavilion that characterizes the nation s culture and ideals For the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal American architect and futurist Buckminster Fuller was chosen to design the U S pavilion What emerged was a 200 ft 70 m rendition of Fuller s iconic geodesic dome Although a NEXT BACK Osaka 1970 An Easterly Affair For more than 100 years the World s Fair was held exclusively in Western countries the U S alone played host to the international affair 18 times In 1970 Japan broke this trend by hosting Asia s first World s Fair in Osaka The expo was notable for screening the first ever Imax film as well as demonstrating early mobile phone and magnetic levitation to run from May 1 to Oct 31 the expo is expected to draw about 70 million visitors from around the world Just as the 2008 Summer Olympics was meant to signify China s re emergence onto the world stage stories before and after the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Expo on Saturday Austria s largest daily Neue Kronen Zeitung said Saturday that the Shanghai Expo was the most expensive event which cost twice as much as the Beijing Olympic Games Shanghai the window of China will also become a center of the world the paper said Whoever does not show here would disappear from the eyesight of China in 50 years the paper quoted deputy commissioner of Austria s delegation Brigitt Murr as saying For those who want and could do business in China no one does not hold good prospects of this future economic superpower it added The article quoted current popular remarks in China as saying that there is no topic that the Beijingers cannot talk about no food that the Cantonese dare not eat and nothing that the Shanghai people cannot accomplish An English language daily of the United Arab Emirates UAE said Monday that the country s participation in the Shanghai Expo comes as a recognition of the important role played by China on the global stage It also reflects the advancements made in the UAE China relationship at various levels the Dubai based Gulf News said in an editorial Omar Al Bitar the UAE s ambassador to China was quoted as saying that the UAE is proud to bring a small part of the country to China This is a great day for China and a great day for the UAE We are also very happy to welcome all our visitors to hear our story he said after opening the UAE pavilion which occupies an area of 6 000 square meters in the heart of the expo site In Canada many people could still
