He falls deeply in love with his own creation. He prays to Venus, the goddess of beauty and love who takes pity on him and brings the statue to life. They get married and spend the rest of their lives together. The British great writer, Bernard Shaw, composed the Pygmalion based on the legend above. Introduction Pygmalion is a play written by Bernard Shaw based on the Greek myth. It tells the story of Henry Higgins, a professer of phonetics, who makes a bet that he can trained a shabby flower girl into a high class fair lady within six months, because he holds the views that your life can be shaped by the way that you speak. The scene takes place outside the Convent Garden Market, where crowds of people have taken shelter from the rain. During this time, a quarrel was engendered due to a flower girls improper greeting, and the professer Henry Higgins made a decision which seemed an impossible mission to his friend, Colonel Pickering, that he decided to train this hideous-pronounced and vulgar flower girl into a fair lady and ultimately accepted by the upper class in the public places.The training process was extremely hash but the flower girl Eliza Doolittle persisted doing it. She even practiced in her dreams. In the process, Higgins and Doolittle grow closer. However, because of the pride of Huggins, Doolittle cannot feel Hugginss care to her. Ultimately, when she declared that she will leave Huggins and married the other young gentleman, Higgins at last realized how much he needed Doolittle and how important Doolittle was.II. Analyse of the Characters1.1 The Analyse of the HeroHuggins, as the hero of the drama, he is a typical chauvinist at that time. He is fanatic about his language career to an extreme point, and he devotes himself to his work absolutely. He can spot a person by his accent. It seems that he has no more interests except phonetics. However, he is an impatient man who scarecely considers the feelings of others.His unintentionally rudness to women is the most real reflection of his value of female. His rude words reflect a social phenomenon: Ones accent stands for his social status in such an era.1.2 The Analyse of the Heroine Doolittle is initially shaped to be a self-respecting woman in the drama. She born to be poor, but she grasped every opportunity to change her life. She could endure the bad temper and the hush training of Huggins, but she cant stand to be treated as an experimental article, she didnt expect Huggins to love her, but she wanted to be friends with him at least. She cant accept any prejudices and discriminations. She is a typical representative of the independent female at that time.III. The Analyse of the Self-respect 1.1 As a Flower GirlIn the drama, ones pronunciation stands for his social status and the flower girl has to make great efforts to improve her pronounciation as well as social etiquette. “ Never you mind, young man. Im going home in a taix. Eight pence aint no object to me”. From her language and behavior, we can draw a conclusion that she is confident, adventurous, intelligent. Even though she is poor and shabby, she also holds the view that she has a right to live well. She execuses herself bravely, and sagaciously use the wisdom to achieve her goal. She is an outstanding example of the self-respect and independent women at that time.1.2 As a Fair LadyAfter Doolittle has successfully tranformed into a Dutchness, however, she realised that she was only a bet or an experimental article for Higgins. She originally thought that her decent and excellent behavior would have gained appreciation or any praises, but Higgins were only sorry for the end of the game. Doolittle finally decided to leave. At that moment, she determined to live on herself with self-repect. “I will speak as I like, you are not my teacher now”. She swore. “Every girl has the right to be loved. I can live without you, dont think I cant”. She shouted out to the professer, “I know Im only a commen and ignorant girl, but Im not dirt on your feet! What I have done was not for the dresses and taxi, because we are pleasant together.” “If I cant have kindness, I must have independence, if you can preach, I can teach! What you told me, I will teach phonetics”. These are what Doolittle have said to the Higgins at the end of the drama. We can see from the words that she bravely expressed what she was yearning for. She needs mutual respect and she will not endure any prejudices and discriminations. Generally speaking, compared to men, girls are born to be weak, but we have to win mutual respect and dignity by our own efforts.IV.
