One is surely the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou ((杭州西湖文化景观)), and the other is the Grand Canal ((大运河)). The later has just been luckily included on the list this year. I hope you will keep it them in mind during your visit here. Its now 20:30 Beijing standard time. You may reset your watch. We are on the way to our hotel, Lakeview Hotel( (望湖宾馆)), a very modern hotel at an ideal location, only a one-minute walk to West Lake. The bus ride to your hotel will take about fifty 50 minutes. But Id like to take this opportunity to talk about our city. Hangzhou, the capital city of Zhejiang Province in the south of the Yangtze River Delta( (长江三角洲)), is not only the political, economic and cultural center of the province but also a well-known tourist city. As it is located in the lower reaches of the Qiantang River approximately 180 kilometers southwest of Shanghai an easy train ride away, its known as the “back garden of Shanghai” by most Chinese people. It is also the southern terminus( (终点站)) of the 1,794 km-long Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal( (京杭大运河)), one of the two greatest man-made projects in ancient China (the other is the Great Wall as you most likely know). The city proper covers 3,068 square kilometers with a population of around 6.5 million in 2013, and the Greater Hangzhou region extends to include 8 administrative regions( (行政区域) ) and 5 counties with a total area of 16,596 square kilometers and over 8.8 million people. Hangzhou lies in a sub-tropical zone with four distinctive seasons. The yearly average temperature is about 17 degrees Celsius with the highest around 40 degrees in summer and the lowest about 6 degrees below zero in winter. But nowadays, due to global warming and extreme weather, the weather here in Hangzhou can sometimes be a little strange. Located at about 30north latitude, Greater Hangzhou enjoys a favorable climate, fertile land and rich resources. The 30north latitude in the world runs through some world wonders such as the Great Pyramid( (金字塔)) in Egypt, ancient Maya( (玛雅)) region, Himalaya Mountains( (喜马拉雅山)), and some great rivers like the Nile( (尼罗河)), the Mississippi River( (密西西比河)), the Changjiang River or Yangtze River in China, etc. Therefore, Hangzhou has been renowned as “the home of silk and tea” and is thus known as a “paradise for tourists.”.” However, Greater Hangzhou is too big a topic. Let us first focus on the city of Hangzhou. Do you know how the name of this city Hangzhou came into being? In ancient times, much of the area of Hangzhou was covered with water. People needed boats to go from one place to another. According to the legend( (传说)), Yu the Great( (大禹)) once came here. Yu was the founder of the first dynasty of China, Xia Dynasty (2070 - 1600 BC). He successfully harnessed Chinas river system and controlled the floods. Hence Hangzhous original name, Yu Hang( (禹杭)), meaning “a land where Yus boat landed.”.” A Temple has been dedicated to Yu the Great, and his tomb was built in Shaoxing, a city not far from Hangzhou.Historically speaking, the area of Hangzhou is one of the cradles of Chinese civilization( (华夏文明发祥地) ) especially with its prosperous Liangzhu Culture( (良渚文化)) dating back( (回溯)) over 5,000 years. During that period, jade carving and silk production were already popular there, as China was the first producer of silk in the world. The city of Hangzhou has a history of over 2200 years; that is, its recorded history can be traced back to( (追溯到)) the Qin Dynasty (221 - 207 BC), as it was first built as Qiantang County and was named after the river as Qiantang in 221 BC. Hangzhou did not take its present name, which means a land accessible( (可进入的)) only by boat, until 589 AD in the Sui Dynasty. During the Sui Dynasty (581 - 618 AD), major construction on the southern section of the Grand Canal was carried out, turning it into a prosperous commercial city then. The Grand Canal, which eventually linked Hangzhou to Beijing, was noted as one of the worlds longest artificial waterways( (人工河道)) forming one of the countrys most important economic arteries( (经济动脉)).Hangzhou has been regarded as one of Chinas six ancient capitals, for it served as the capital of both the powerful Wuyue Kingdom in the 10th century and the Southern Song Dynasty (1127 - 1279 AD). A Venetian merchant( (威尼斯商人)), Marco Polo( (马可波罗,, 1254- - 1324 AD)) visited Hangzhou in about 1280 and wrote that it was “without doubt the finest and noblest city in the world.” As well, he was also fascinated by the luxurious( (华丽的)) silk available in the city at that time. Hangzhou silk was not only chosen as a tribute( (贡品)) to the imperial rulers but also exported overseas. Marco Polos description of Hangzhou made both the city and the silk well-known worldwide. Just imagine, some 800 years ago, how these beautiful silks, fine soft satins (绸缎) and fantastic brocades( (锦缎)) were carried to European countries through the famous Silk Road( (丝绸之路)) and caught the fancy of westerners.OK, so that was a brief history of Hangzhou. Now very soon we will come to the largest river in this province. Please look to the front and you will be able to see a big bridge over the Qiantang River. Presently there are seven bridges over the river but with three more to come in the near future. Its the fourth one. The river is known for its spectacular( (壮观的)) tidal bore( (潮涌)). During the Mid-autumn Festival every year, it attracts thousands of people from near and far including tourists, who come to view this awesome( (令人惊叹的)) natural phenomenon and experience the mighty( (强大的)) power of nature. The waves surge from the sea into the river going upstream all the way to the end of the lower reaches of the river. You will see it some day. Now we have entered the downtown area. The city of Hangzhou can be divided into roughly three parts. The northern part is the industrial area with lots of factories, mostly for light industry. The old town area is in the southeast of the city, and is home to the imperial palace of the Southern Song Dynasty. The southwestern part boasts many tourist attractions with West Lake at its center which you will see clearly tomorrow. As you know, the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou has been on the list of UNESCO World Her- itage Sites( (联合国教育科学文化组织世界遗产名录地)) since 2011. The West Lake Cultural Landscape, comprised of West Lake and its surrounding hills, covers an area of over 33 square kilometers with numerous temples, pagodas, gardens, as well as causeways and artificial islands. I bet you cant wait, right?Since its already late, you may just take a short rest and enjoy the night view of the city through the windows. Our hotel is quite near now, just about a five-minute ride away. Since we will have a boat tour of West Lake at 9:30 tomorrow morning, is it possible for us to meet together at in the hotel lobby at 9:00 tomorrow? And shall we set the morning call for 7:30 am? Great, so lets meet at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow in the lobby. And we do hope you will have a very pleasant trip here in Hangzhou. Here is our hotel. Please double check your luggage and follow me. Part C Tips for Delivering a Welcome SpeechQuestions for comprehension and discussion: Brainstorm any tips on how to deliver a welcome speech. On the way to the hotel, what may most of the tourists expect to hear? What do you think a welcome speech should be like? On the way to the hotel, most of the tourists will be quite excited to hear about the new place, and expect to be told about what they will see. Therefore, a welcome speech made by a tour guide is very important. It should be warm, thoughtful and exciting. In the welcome speech, as a tour guide, you should first extend a warm welcome to the tourists who have arrived. Your guests will be very happy and feel at home to hear the warmest greeting from you,, their local guide in a strange country. Second, you should introduce yourself, the driver and the tour operator for whom you work. In the meantime, you should assure the tourists that your team will do your best to offer them satisfactory service. Then you should tell them about the location and the facilities of the hotel. After arriving at a new place, most tourists would like to know exactly where they are, and what their hotel will be like. After that, if time permits( (许可)), you should give a brief introduction to the city or town, such as the population, climate, customs and history. Although many tourists have already read some information about the tourist destinations before the tour, they would still like to learn more specific information from the local guide. Interesting facts and information are always welcome. Last but not least, you should wish the tourists a good time during their stay, and confirm the following days activities as well as the meeting time and place you will meet them. Besides, you should also remind the tourists to reset their watches according to the local time, remember the plate number of the bus and your phone number as well.So in short, you should remember the following elements when delivering a good welcome speech: extend a warm welcome to the tourists; introduce your team on behalf of the tour operator; inform the tourists of the local time, offering your contact number; give a brief introduction to the city, town or the place; confirm the meeting time and place for the next days activities; offer them best wishes for a pleasant trip.Part D Language Checklist A.
