Self-evaluation1 general evaluationThis is a reading lesson, which is about the geography, climate, culture, history, language about the English Isles. Being faced with the new curriculum, the teachers have to change in some way. The teaching objectives of the new English curriculum require that language teaching is more than just teaching the knowledge and skills. It includes caring for students affective needs, developing their learning strategies, widening up their cultural horizons and establishing international perspectives through the process of language learning. Apart from getting some important language points, the students ability of obtaining and disposing information should be enhanced. Thus, the main objective of this lesson is helping the students to get a comprehensive understanding of this text, improving their reading skills and broadening their horizon. In order to achieve this goal, various teaching methods are used.In the teaching process, I lead the students to take the text as a whole thing, not being limited to translating sentence by sentence. After the whole structure is clear to them, they are guided to reading carefully paragraph by paragraph. Within the while-reading part, various tasks are designed to help them. The students are the center of the teaching from the very beginning to the end. They are encouraged to ask questions, discuss with their classmates and express themselves in front of the class.As is known to all, group work is a popular teaching method these days. If well organized, it will dramatically increase the amount of talk of individual students. It also encourages cooperation and negotiation skills among students. In this class, the students collective spirit is aroused by the competition among groups. Also, they practice their oral English by discussing.According to McDonough and Shaw (2003), ones overall competence in a foreign language involves performing effectively a combination of the skills. In this class, speaking, listening and reading are involved in the reading process in hope of leading to the students all-round development of communicative competence in English by integrating the basic skills.2 The advantagesIn the whole class, different types of activities are designed to improve students reading comprehension. At the very beginning, making predictions plays an important role in the next step of reading. In while-stage, different activities are for different part of the text. For instance, the students are required to answer some questions after listening to the tape of the first paragraph. On one hand, they get to know the right pronunciation and collocation in a sentence. On the other hand, they may have their first impression on something new and this may arouse their interests in it and inspire them to think which is more effective for learner than directly tell them something. Also, this may test their abilities to get information through listening. For the rest of the class, there are gap-fillings and retelling.Whats more, the stages and steps within each stage are planed in such a way that they are linked with one another. Namely, the teaching objectives are achieved step by step. And recycling and reinforcement are involved. For instance, after knowing the whole structure, they are guided to read deeply of each paragraph. Also, the activities of the post-stage are designed to consolidate what the students have learnt in the class.The main part of this class is the while-stage where the cooperative learning plays an important role. The general idea behind cooperative learning is that by working in groups, negotiating, imitating, planning and evaluating together, students will be more motivated to learn. But only the group works are well organized, can it produce positive effects. An effective cooperative learning include Positive Interdependence, Face to Face Promotive Interaction, Personal Responsibility, Interpersonal and small-group skills and Group Processing. Most of these elements are included in the group work. For instance, before the group works, teacher will teach students some interpersonal and small-group skills, such as showing respect to others, trusting each other. We all know that personal responsibility is the key to ensuring that all group members are in fact, strengthened by learning cooperating. In the class, the competition makes every student be more responsible for their group because of the collective spirit.3 The DisadvantagesThe English Curriculums emphasizes the center role of students in class. And the ultimate goal of teaching is the development of every student. Each one of them is different from the others in the language ability, learning style or some other aspects, which requires our teachers to plan our lessons, present our lessons on the basis of students practical levels. American psychologist Bloom said that the reason why many students dont get significant achievement doesnt lie in the difference of intelligence but in the inappropriate teaching condition and unreasonable help. Teaching by different levels offer different leveled students such reasonable and new learning opportunity.In this class, the idea of leveled teaching can hardly be founded. The tasks, questions are comparatively easy and simple to finish. Take the oral work for example, in this step, students are supposed to use the underlined vocabulary to recall or reproduce a sentence about the English Isles. For the high-leveled students, its just a piece of cake, so in the learning process, they cannot get some improvement because there is no chance.In order to make every student improve to a certain extend, we should teach by different levels. A clear command of the students language level, learning habits is important and essential. According to their differences, we need to divide the whole class into three different levels: the top students who have consolidated foundation of knowledge, correct learning strategies. the middle-leveled students with ordinary consolidation and intelligence who make the main part of the whole class. the basal ones with negative motivation. After class, teacher can provide them with different teaching advice in accordance with their levels. In class, wed better present our class on the basis of the medium ones. Meanwhile, there must be some tasks designed for the other two levels. Taking this consideration into account, we can design a higher leveled task in the oral work for the top students. For example, ask the students to write a paragraph about the English Isles if some of them think it quite easy to retell a sentence.Questioning is the most common form of interaction between the teacher and the students in the classroom. Often, teachers can attract students attention, invite thinking and imaginations, check understanding, and stimulate recall of information by asking questions. To achieve those goals, questions should be wise and purposeful as well as various. Examining the questions of this lesson, I found most of the questions asked are closed, lower-order and display questions which means the answers are known to the teachers. To answer those questions, students just need to find the exact words and sentences in their books without thinking. For instance, the answers to the questions of task4 can be found in paragraph 4 and paragraph5. If there were some open questions designed for more thinking and discussion, the interaction in class will be more effective, the students ability of reasoning, analysis and evaluation will be improved.4 improvementIn conclusion, various teaching methods are applied in this lesson. For example, although this is a lesson for reading, some other language skills are also involved in the whole process. In the past, maybe a lesson just was taught for the sake of one single skill. Actually, the language skills cannot be used in isolation. When you are listening, you also need to write something down, or speak with others. Namely, its essential for our teachers to integrate the four language skills in class, for the integration of the skills can raise students motivation to learn English. This lesson includes the practice of listening, speaking and reading. Consequently, we build more variety into the lesson because the range of activities is wider. However, integrating the skills means that we are working at the level of realistic communication, not just at the level of vocabulary and some patterns. Looking back on the teaching procedures of this reading class, we may find that most of our attention is paid to the vocabulary or language points.
