瓦房店市高级中学高二英语月考试题 考试时间:100分钟 总分:150分 2015.10.11第一部分:听力(略)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) A From the very beginning of school we make books and reading a constant source (源头)of possible failure and public humiliation(侮辱). When children are little we make them read aloud before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they know all the words they are reading. This means that when they dont know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously. One day soon after school had started, I said to them, Now Im going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before. I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, thats enough for me. Also Im not going to ask you what words mean. The children sat stunned and silent. Was this teacher talking seriously? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, Mr Holt, do you really mean that I said just as seriously ? I mean every word of it. During the spring she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations(插图) I thought I knew what the book was. I said to myself, It cant be, and went to take a closer look. Sure enough, she was reading Moby Dick , in edition with woodcuts. I said, Dont you find parts of it rather heavy going She answered, “Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part. This is exactly what reading, I think ,should be :find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, and then go on to something else. 21. According to the passage, childrens fear and dislike of books may result from_ . A. being made to read aloud before others B. reading often and adventurously C. being made to read too much D. being made to read aloud before others22. The teacher told his students to read_ . A. for higher scores in exams B. for knowledge C. for enjoyment D. for a larger vocabulary 23. Upon hearing the teachers talk, the children probably felt that _. A. it sounded stupid B. it was not surprising at all C. it sounded too good to be true D. it was no different from other teachers talk24. Which of the following statements about the girl is TRUE according to the passage? A. She skipped over those easy parts while reading. B. She had a hard time finishing the required reading tasks. C. She learned to appreciate some parts of the difficult books. D. She turned out to be a top student after coming to this school.B No one is sure how the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids(金字塔) near Cairo. But a new study suggests long-ago builders could have tied wooden poles to the stones and rolled them across the sand, the scientists say. “Strictly speaking, I think what theyre suggesting is possible,” physicist Daniel Bonn said. People have long been puzzled over how the Egyptians moved such huge rocks to the pyramid site from about one kilometer away. And theres no clear answer. The most popular view is that Egyptian workers slid the blocks(石块) along smooth paths. Many scientists suspect workers first would have put the blocks on sleds(滑板). Then they would have dragged them along paths. To make the work easier, workers may havelubricated(润滑) the pathseither with wet clay or with the fat from cattle. Bonn has now tested this idea by building small sleds and dragging heavy objects over sand. Evidence(证据) from the sand supports this idea. Researchers found small amounts of fat, as well as a large amount of stone and the remains of paths. However, physicist Joseph West think there might have been a simpler way, who led the new study. West said, “I was inspired while watching a television program:Why dont they just try rolling the things ? A square (方形) could be turned into a rough sort of wheel by tying wooden poles to its sides .That should make a block of stone easier to roll than a square”. So he triedit. He and his students tied some poles to each of four sides of a 30-kilogram stone block. That action turned the block into somewhat a wheel. The researchers found they could easily roll the block along different kinds of paths. They calculated that rolling the block required about as much force as moving it along a slippery(滑的)path. West thinks rolling has clear advantages over sliding. At least, workers wouldnt have needed to carry cattle fat or water to smooth the paths.25.Its widely believed that the stone blocks were moved to the pyramid site by _. A. rolling them on roads B. pushing them over the sand C. sliding them on smooth paths D. dragging them on some poles26.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 7 refer to? A.Rolling the blocks with poles tied. B.Rolling the blocks on wooden wheels. C.Rolling poles to move the blocks. D.rolling the blocks with fat.27. Why is rolling better than sliding according to West ? A. Because more force is needed for sliding. B. Because rolling work can be done by fewer cattle.C. Because sliding on smooth road is more dangerous.D. Because less preparation on path is needed for rolling.28. What is the text mainly about ? A. An experiment on ways of moving blocks to the pyramid site. B. An application of the method of moving blocks to the pyramid site. C. An argument about how ancient Egyptians built pyramids D.Views about the ways of moving blocks to the pyramid site. CNothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability(残疾)for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey. And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgins chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料). The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter. As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dads pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out. Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it? The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak(泄漏)! Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didnt look that bad. We took a taste and soon we drank up every last drop of soup.29. Although the weather was not good we didnt want to give it up, but finally my friends and I agreed that we should go back. We tried to change the boats direction, but as soon as we changed it,the oarlock(桨架)broke. So we were unable to turn back. We had to wait for help because we couldnt do anything. After seeing the change of the weather, we shouldnt have continued to row, but it was too late. We regretted it. The sea changed a lot, the waves got a lot high, and the boat began to shake like a candle. One of my friends began to cry; another started to vomit. Three hours passed, and nobody came to help us. We were praying. After long hours of waiting, two boats came to our rescue and we survived. If they hadnt come to get us, we would have crossed the border between Turkey and Greece for the border was very close. This story is the most exciting in my life because we could have died , but luck was with us and we escaped., 32.
