All the exercises here are concerned with family. Play the recording and check the students answers. Play it again, stop after each sentence and ask some students to repeat the sentence. Correct the students pronunciation when necessary.Task 2This task checks the students ability to figure out key information in long conversation. Play the recording. Ask some students to tell their choices and check them.Task 3This part helps improve the students ability in dictation. Ask the students to pay attention to the grammatical coherence in their answers. Play the recording. Ask some students to write the words which are filled in the blanks on the blackboard. Check the answers.Task 4This part helps the students listen for key information in a passage.Tell the students to read the four choices in advance so that they are better prepared for the question and the passage. Its a useful technique when they take a test.Task 5 This task helps the students listen for key information and some of the details in passages.Tell the students to get some information from the incomplete answers to the question before listening, so that they are better prepared for the listening task. Tell them to pay attention to the grammatical coherence in their answers.Step 2 Topic exploration“East or West, home is best.” To explore the topic of “Home and Family”, the teacher will draw out the students own thoughts and feelings about being away from home encourage them to express their nostalgia.Step 3 Leading-in (Text A)Group work: (1)The teacher lets the students discuss the questions on page 2: 1. What come(s) to mind when you hear the word “home”? 2. What does staying with your parents mean to you?3. How did your parents support and help you when you were in trouble?After discussion, let some of them present their opinions.Step 4 Word studyThe teacher lets the students pronounce the new words one by one. If they go wrong, the teacher will correct them. Then explain some words.Step 5 Listening (Text)The teacher lets the students listen to the text and try to read after the tape.Step 6 Homework 1. Read the new words and text after class2. Step 2 Spot dictationThe following paragraph is taken from Text A. listen carefully and fills in the blanks without referring to the original text. I _ on a farm with a huge family. She felt close to her family and was never bored with farm work.Part Two(Para. 3-4)Fun time in Arizona. Though the surrounds were different, she enjoyed the exciting life in Arizona. Part Three(Para. 5-8)Success in career and void in life in California. The success in her career did not bring her the happiness she once enjoyed when she was with her family. She found there was something missing in life. Part Four(Para. 9-10)With a new house in the valley in countryside California and her parents living with her, she resumed happiness. Step 5 Analysis on the important language points. chase: v. 追逐,追捕e.g. -Why do modern people chase material wealth? 现代人为什么追求物质财富?e.g. -He is chasing after wealth all his life. 他一生都在追求财富。n. 追逐;追捕 give chase to: 追赶e.g. -They gave chase to the enemy. 他们追击敌人。 cattle: 牛的总称,包括bull(公牛);cow(母牛),calf(小牛), 集体名词,谓语动词用复数。e.g. -The cattle are grazing. 牛在吃草。 bore: 使(人)厌烦 e.g. -The lecture bored us to tears. 讲座使我们大家都感到厌烦之极。bored: 厌烦的,不感兴趣的 e.g. -He is bored with swimming. 他对游泳感到厌烦。 find its way into:进入 e.g. - Computers have found their way into millions of households. 计算机已经进入了千家万户。 a labor of love A labor of love is a set expression, indicating that a particular activity (e.g. gardening in the greenhouse, gathering cattle, etc.) may be troublesome to other people, but you take great care to do the work properly because you really enjoy ithence, to them, the work is a “labor of love.” My father taught himself since he could not afford to go to school at that time.e.g. -Helping my mother with cooking is a labor of love for me. 对我来说,帮妈妈做饭是一件乐事。 diagnose: v. 诊断(疾病);判断(问题) e.g. - His illness was diagnosed as a terminal disease. 他的疾病被诊断为不治之症。sth.(illness) is diagnosed as 某种疾病被诊断为e.g. - The old man is diagnosed with cancer. 这位老人被诊断为癌症。 sb. is diagnosed with some kind of illness某人被诊断出得了某种病 fate: 命运,运数 词意辨析:fate, destiny, doom 都含“命运”的意思。 fate 指“宿命”, 具有神话或迷信色彩, 使人有畏惧和无可奈何之感, 如: 他认为考试没通过是因为他命不好。He thought his failure in exam is due to his poor fate. destiny 除含有“命运注定”之意外, 还暗示“充满美好希望”, 如: 她命里注定出名。It was her destiny to become famous. doom 指“最终的、常常是毁灭性或灾难性的命运”, 如: 斯大林格勒战役决定了希特勒的灭亡。The Battle of Stalingrad sealed Hitlers doom. come up: 走近,走到跟前 e.g. - Come up here; you will see better. 走过来,你可以看得清楚点 。 cross ones mind: 掠过心头,想起 e.g. -我突然有一个想法。A sudden thought crossed my mind. give/have it a shot : 尝试 e.g. - Ill give a shot at catching the train. 我想试试看能否赶上这次列车。 approach: 着手,开始处理;走近,靠近 e.g. - The problem can be approached from different angles. 这个问题可以从不同的角度来处理。e.g. - He is easily approached. 他平易近人。 resume: 重新开始,继续 e.g. - The students resumed their discussion after the teacher left. 老师离开后,学生继续他们的讨论。 replace: 取代,代替;把放回原处 e.g. - No one can replace George as forward in the next round. 在下一轮的比赛里没有人能取代乔治的前锋位置。e.g. - Please replace the newspapers after reading them. 看完报纸后请放回原处。 void: 空虚感,失落感 e.g. - With nothing to do at home, the housewife felt a void in her life.由于在家里无事可做,这位主妇觉得空虚。 eat away at: 侵蚀;消耗 e.g. - The river had eaten away the banks. 河水侵蚀了河岸。e.g. - Rust has eaten away the hinge. 铰链已被铁锈腐蚀。 be keen on: 热衷,渴望做某事e.g. - He is keen on going abroad. 他渴望出国。 rat race: 争斗困难,令人疲惫,常常是充满竞争性的活动或日常安排 e.g. -For many people living in big cities, life has become a rat race. 大城市的很多人都在疲于奔命。 renew: 使康复,使获得新生;更换,更新;重新开始 e.g. - After recovering from her illness, the old lady felt renewed. 这位老太太病愈后有一种获得新生的感觉。e.g. - Water in the tank must be renewed every two weeks. 每隔两周水箱必须换水。e.g. - The father and son renewed their correspondence. 父子恢复了通信联系。Step 6 ConsolidationThe teacher asks the students to fill in the following table.Changes in the Authors LifeDescribing the ChangesPhysical ChangesShe grew from a farm girl into a woman in a modern city.Geographical ChangesShe moved from her parents farm to Arizona, then to Los Angeles, a big city in California.Emotional ChangesShe felt close to her family and was never bored with farm work.She felt a void in her life in Los Angeles.Finally, a sense of balance returned to her soul after her parents moved to her new home.Step 7 Homework 1. finish the text-related exercise 2. recite the new words and phrases 新视野英语教程第三册教案授课教师教 材New Horizon English Course (3)授课内容Text-related exercises 教学目标After having this lesson, the students are expected to be able to 1.
