When they are two or three years old, they sometimes go to a nursery school, but they dont have to. The first school is called a primary school, and in this school children study a range of basic subjects, such as reading, writing and mathematics. There is a National Curriculum which all state schools must follow, but which private schools are not required to. Most children go to state schools, where the parents dont have to pay. About 6% of children go to private schools, where the parents have to pay fees. These can be very expensive. At the age of 11, most children change schools and go to a secondary school. They have to stay at this school for five years schooling is compulsory in the UK until the age of 16. In many secondary schools children have to wear a uniform for the first five years, but often in the last two years they dont have to. At 16, children take examinations in a range of different subjects. This examination is called the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE). After that they may stay at school for two or three more years to take Advanced-level examinations (A-levels) or they may leave. They can, for example, leave school and go to a further education college to take A-levels, or vocational qualifications (diplomas). Or they can leave to find jobs. Over 20% of students in the UK go on to higher education (university or college) to take degrees or diplomas. This figure is rising and will soon be 30-40%. Because English continues to be a highly important world language, many foreign students want to go to university in the UK. They believe that good English will help them to find better jobs and have a more successful career. As well as this, many students think that they will benefit from the ideas in western universities. So, many further education colleges and universities offer foundation courses for foreign students to prepare for university study in the UK. 1).Which of the following basic subjects neednt children learn in a primary school?A. People like living at a breakneck speed. Fast-food restaurants, one minute bedtime stories, microwave ovens, quick freezers, instant noodles(面条), automatic dial buttons on the telephone, the remote control of a television, e-mails, the Internet, all these have caused a speed-up in the pace of peoples life. These days it is possible to drive, eat, listen to the radio, watch a TV show or talk on the phone all at once, if you dare. Not long ago, for most people, listening to the radio was a single-task activity. Now it is rare for a person to listen to the radio and do nothing else. Even television has lost its command of our attention. In so many houses the TV just stays on, like a noisy light, while the life of the busy family passes back and forth in front of it. In the technology-driven Western world, the increasing wealth and the increasing education bring a sense of tension about time. People believe that they have little time. They wish they had 48 hours a day. American culture views time as a thing to be kept and saved. Timesaving is a subject often talked about and discussed. Books with such titles as Streamlining Your Life; Take Your Time; More Hours in My Day are always best sellers. People have talked and wanted many ways to “save time”. But what does this concept mean? Does timesaving mean getting more done? If so, does talking on a mobile phone at the beach save time or waste it? If you can choose between a 30 minute train ride, during which you can read and a 20 minute drive, during which you cannot read, does this drive save ten minutes? Does it make sense to say driving saves ten minutes from your travel budget while removing ten minutes from your reading budget? These questions have no answer. They depend on a concept that is ill formed: the very idea of timesaving. Some of us say we want to save time when really we just want to do more and faster. It might be simplest to recognize that there is time and we make choices about how to spend it, how to spare it, how to use it and how to fill it. Time is not a thing we have lost. It is not a thing we ever had. It is what we live in. 1).According to the passage, what characterizes life today is that we _.A. are all in a rushB. live at a breakneck speedC. save a lot of timeD. feel time is pressing正确答案:E满分:2得分:02).In the sentence, These days it is possible to drive, eat, listen to the radio, watch a TV show or talk on the phone all at once the phrase all at once means all _.A. immediately B. at the same timeC. quickly D. instantly 正确答案:C满分:2得分:03).The author believes that the increasing wealth and the increasing education bring a sense of tension _.A. about timeB. among peopleC. with more things to doD. both A and B正确答案:B满分:2得分:24).The author _the American idea that time is a thing that can be kept and saved.A. believes inB. does not believeC. is doubtful aboutD. is certain about正确答案:D满分:2得分:05).The best title for this passage is _.A.
