教学设计 外国语学院英本072班 吴 琴(07090116)Unit 3 Travel JournalTeaching Material: New Senior English for China Students Book 1Teaching Subjects: Students from Grade one, SeniorTeaching Module: ReadingThoughts on the Designs: In this lesson, Journey down the Mekong in Unit 3 will be the main reading material, while after class, another piece of reading material will be offered. Through the whole class, the students will experience different kinds of reading strategies (fast reading, skimming, close reading, etc.), after which they are required to finish various types of exercises (multiple-choice test, gap-filling, T or F questions, etc.). And at the end of the class, the students will have the opportunity to text their understanding of the text, that is to say, retelling the text in accordance with the key words on the blackboard. After class, the students need to finish some homework to further improve their integrated language capability.Task Analysis: This passage is the first part of Journey down the Mekong. It gives students the background about the bike trip, especially the planning that went into it. This part also introduces students to the four young people who made the trip: Wang Kun, the writer of the journal and his sister, Wang Wei, and their cousins Dao Wei and Yu Hang. This section also introduces students to many of the geographical terms they will use throughout the Students Book and Workbook parts.Difficult Point:Students will learn different reading skills in this period.Key Point:Students will develop their reading ability, especially the ability of understanding implied meanings.Analysis of Students: Before this reading lesson, the students have already learned the new words in this text, though not concretely, it will be less difficult for them to understand the text. And the students have certain ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing and have a general idea of several reading techniques.Teaching Aims:Knowledge Aims:1. Learn the useful new words and expressions in this passage, such as cycle, persuade, stubborn, change ones mind, etc.2. Learn about the Present Continuous Tense briefly.Ability Aims:1. Get the main idea of the passage.2. Analyze Wang Weis characteristics.3. Master some geographic terms.Emotional Aims:Cultivate their love for nature and learn the spirit of optimism and persistence.Teaching & Studying Methods:1. Task-based teaching and learning- pre-task: the process of leading in the topic; task-cycle: the process of finishing the tasks; post-task: the process of showing and making further understanding.2. Cooperative learning: by pair work and group work, students can communicate with each other and exchange their opinions, and also practice the useful words and expressions in this passage.3. Discussion: by discussing freely, students will pay more attention to the topic and have more chances to practice their oral English.Teaching Procedures: Step 1: Lead-in Through the travel plan to the Expo made in the last period, teacher motivates the students to think about the shortcomings of traveling to big cities, and thus leads in the new idea of ecotourism which is related to the text in this unit. Teacher asks the following questions:Q1: What will happen if such big city receives too many tourists?Q2: If you want to have an ecotourism, where will you choose? Please tell us why.Explanation By combing the topic discussed in the last period, the students can concentrate on this one more quickly. And the transition of the topic, from the disadvantages of traveling to crowded cities to ecotourism, can be easily accepted by the students; so naturally, they get into the study of the text in this unit.Step 2: Timed Reading Students are required to read the text silently in three minutes. After finishing, teacher offers questions to test them.Q1: Where did they plan to go and how?A: They planned to cycle along the (entire) Mekong River (from where it begins to where it ends).Q2: Who planned the trip to the Mekong? a) Wang Kun b) Wang Wei c) Dao Wei d) Yu HangQ3: Who cares more about details when planning the schedule for the trip, Wang Kun or Wang Wei?A: Wang Kun.Q4: What did they find in the library several months before their trip?A: They found a large atlas with good maps.At the end of this step, teacher asks one more question to make sure the students have a clear outline of the text.Q: Who can tell me what the text is talking about in one or two sentences?Explanation The use of timed reading as the first step in the process of reading comprehension can help students increase their reading speed. To test the effect of their reading, follow several questions which are easy and quick to answer.Step 3: Scanning & Intensive Reading . Para 1: The Plan to the Mekong River Students are required to read Para 1 again. Before they read, teacher offers a table and a question. Para 2: The Preparation for the Trip Students are required to read Para 2 again. Teacher offers several T or F questions (if the students choose F, then should find the right answer).Q1: Wang Kun is fond of his sister because she has no shortcomings.Q2: Wang Wei insisted that she organize the trip properly because she knew the best way of getting to places.Q3: Wang Wei cares about details very much while planning the trip.Q4: After Wang Kun told Wang Wei the difficulties of the trip, she got disappointed. (Please name some difficulties.)Q5: Once Wang Wei has made up her mind, nothing can change it. Para 3: Some Geographical Knowledge about the Mekong River(1) Students read the map and Para 3 to list the countries that the Mekong River flows through. (2) Students are required to fill in the following blanks. The Mekong River begins in a _ on a Tibetan mountain. At first the river is small and the water is clear and cold. Then it becomes _ as it passes through _. Sometimes the river becomes a _ and enters wide valleys. After it leaves _ and _, the Mekong becomes _, _, _. As it enters Southeast Asia, its _ slows. It makes wide _ or meanders through low valleys to the plains. On one hand, it is a direct way to test the degree of their understanding, on the other, varied tasks arouse students interest to read and find the right answers. While analyzing the sentence structure briefly, teacher can let students do some translation, so they can have a more direct realization of the structures.Step 4: Listening & Reading Students listen to the tape of the test and follow it. Explanation By combing listening and reading, students can improve their comprehensive ability. And this step also paves the way for next step.Step 5: Retelling the Text Students are required to retell the text based on the exercises in Step 3. First work in pairs and then individually. Explanation To test whether students have understood the text and offer them a chance to practice their ability of oral presentation.Step 6: Homework(1) Finish off the related exercises in the Workbook.(2) Rewrite Journey down the Mekong in no more than 100 words.(3) After-class reading: Travel to the Forest. Talk about your feelings to your classmates. Explanation Rewriting is used to improve their writing skills and the ability of reconstruction.
