Research Proposal Title: An Analysis of Zhang Peijis Prose Translaton Style Using Cong Cong as an Example 院 别 外 国 语 学 院 学年（学期）2011-2012学年（第1学期）年级（班） 2008级（ 2 班） 学 生 姓 名 学 号 20080501195 2012年 12月 11日 An Analysis of Zhang Peijis Prose Translaton StyleUsing Cong Cong as an ExampleSummary of the project This thesis will conduct a tentative approach to Prof. Zhang Peiji art and style basing on the basis of his three volumes of Selected Modern Chinese Prose Writings, particularly, one of his excellent work-Transient Days. Though a brief introduce of Zhang Peiji life experience as well as his major translations and monographs, the author believes it is safe to say that Prof. Zhang ranks among Chinese most prestigious translators and contributes significantly to the translation cause. In the second part of this thesis, we explore different definitions which given by different scholars. After that, we enjoy the beauty and three distinctive features of modern Chinese prose. And then we summarize that prose is an art language, which roots on sentiments, forms by free and flexible organization, focuses on the mental feeling, and tones on nature of reality. As Prof. Zhang mainly engages in Chinese-English translation, especially in modern Chinese prose translation. And the author will choose one of his masterpiece- Transient Days (Cong Cong) to make an approach to Prof. Zhang translation style. And illustrate Zhang style by analyzing vocabulary level, sentence level, discourse level. After that the author will draw the conclusion. Prof. Zhang pursues an accurate selecting of word, smoothness of expression and flexibility in handling the restriction of the original text. He pays more attention to textual spirits and tries every effort to realize the information, function of source text while maintaining the style and flavor of it. By an in-depth analysis of Prof. Zhang translation style, the author wants to make his own contribution to promote our Chinese-English translation calls on scholars to actively participate in the translation cause and make their own contribution to the output of Chinese culture.Purpose of the project. Prof. Zhang Peiji, a prestigious translator as well as a famous translation educator in China, enjoys a high reputation for his contribution to literary translation, especially modern Chinese prose translation. He has been engaging in translation for more than fifty years and made a significant contribution to Chinese translation cause. However, there are not so many figures who mainly engage in C-E translation as Prof. Zhang Peiji does. Meantime, the number of people who mainly devotes himself into C-E translation is so small, which makes China culture output inefficient. So, the author of this thesis, overviews Zhang prose translation, analyzes one of his prose, explores his translation style, to provide the future translator appropriate assistance, to call on scholars to actively participate in the translation cause and make their own contribution to the output of Chinese culture. Literature review In recent years Translation Studies have been focusing increasingly on translators. Theorists have begun to research into translators backgrounds，translation motivations, translation views and translation practice, so as to generalize information helpful for translation theory development and translator cultivation. The study on translators translation styles, mature translation techniques is important part of translation studies. However, much of the attention has been attached to the study of poetry and fiction translation in China. By comparison, prose translation, no matter in practice or in theoretical study, has lagged far behind. Though theres an undeniable fact that prose translation accounts for a lions share in translation activities and countless translators have been devoted to this cause, its still pitiful to recognize that prose translation is far from good. The theoretical works concerning prose translation which explore the inner mechanism guiding the translating process are relatively scanty, especially those with unique perspective and systematic framework.Significance of the project Our country has a long traditional convention for prose and the achievements made by prose composition are not inferior to poetry composition, but the research of prose translation seems to be left far behind compared with prose composition. At present，prose translation study is mostly found in articles which are descriptive or commentary, and its systematic and theoretical study is scarce. According to the feature of prose as “ free form but focused spirit”，the beauty of prose is the most important and difficult problem for translators to surmount. Meanwhile，in China, many translators engage in Chinese -English. However，Prof. Zhang peiji is rather special one because he has engaged in translation for more than 50 years，and mainly in C-E translation, particularly in prose translation to introduce Chinese thoughts and ideas to foreigners effectively. The author believes such a famous translator is worth study, so the author would like to make a tentative study on his translation style.studies. The study on translator is a necessary part in the framework of whole translation studies and the study on translators should have been stressed，however，it has been generally ignored over these decades on a large scale. By exploring his translation style, the author try to provide the future translator appropriate assistance, to call on scholars to actively participate in the translation cause and make the output of Chinese culture more efficient.Research questions or hypothesisThis thesis tries to conduct a tentative approach to Prof. Zhang Peiji art and style. This paper focuses on the following questions: 1. How many people who mainly engage in prose translation? What are major works?2. Does much of the attention has been attached to the study of the prose translation as to poetry and fiction translation in China?3. What possible influences does the study of translators translation styles, mature translation techniques have on translation theories and translation practice?4. What possible influences does the study of prose translation style in cross-cultural communication and Chinese culture output ?Data collection Language data used to support this thesis are collected by interviewing associate professor Ye Xiaobao, reading books and searching CNKI . From associate professor Ye Xiaobao, the author would like to know the outlook of Chinese-English translation. And by reading books and searching CNKI the author would like to know How many people who mainly engage in prose translation? What are major works? Whether much of the attention has been attached to the study of the prose translation as to poetry and fiction translation or not? What possible influences does the study of translators translation styles, mature translation techniques have on translation theories and translation practice? What possible influences does the study of prose translation style in cross-cultural communication and Chinese culture output ? After reading and searching, the author is more willing to seek teacher Zhang Luping s help, and select the data for the thesis.Analysis methodThe proposed study will be conducted bearing in mind issues of costs, time and access to the target. It will be carried out in three phases, using quantitative and qualitative methods to collect primary data. Phase One will involve an in-depth literature review to achieve a more detailed theoretical framework and definitions of variables that will influence interview designs and subsequent analyses. During Phase Two, primary and secondary data will be collected from various method . Primary data will be collected using interviews. This interviews and will be administered in Advanced teaching and research office. Secondary data sources will include books, journals, reports and archival information.
