Dave Murbach needs 11 months. Almost every day of every year, Murbachs thoughts turn to vision of a perfectly shaped evergreen tree that will take everyones breath away.Murbach is the man responsible for finding the towering tree that makes more attractive Manhattans RockefellerCenter each Christmas season.“Im always looking for a tree,” the centers chief gardener says. “I look for it even when I go to the beach in the summer. Its like a homework assignment hanging over your head.”And if he gets it wrong, theres nothing hiding it.“Every day its up, 400,000 people go by, and 2.5 million people watch the lighting celebration on television,”he says. This years tree, a 74-foot Nomy spruce (云杉) from Richfield, Ohio, flown to New York on the worlds largest cargo plane, was lighted on December 2. The arrival of the tree leads in the Christmas season in New York a tradition dating back to 1931, when the workers building RockefellerCenter put up a small tree with ornaments. The search for the next years tree starts soon after the old tree is chopped up for wood chips and horse-jumping logs.Murbach has three standards: The tree must be at least 65 feet high, at least 35 feet across and leaves dense enough not to see through. Thats not as simple as it sounds. Though forests are full of evergreens, few get enough sunlight or space to fill out. And branches in snow regions often break under the weight, making trees unbalanced. Back at the office, he sorts through hundreds of letters from people offering their trees, many addressed simply to “Mr. Christmas Tree Man.” Though there was occasional anxiety attack and sleepless night, Murbach knows the effect the tree has on people: “Its for bringing people together, attempting to bring together people you love. Thats what I hope it sets off.” But Murbach says hes always too worn out to celebrate Christmas.21. Which is the correct order of the events in the passage? a. Because he wants everyone to be happy with his choice. B. Because he hopes to make everybody unable to breathe.C. Because he enjoys showing off. D. Because he wishes to attract peoples attention to himself.23. According to Murbach s standard of trees, the best tree must _.A. be evergreen B. have lots of space between their branchesC. be tall enough not to see through D. be equally balancedBAbout this time every year, I get very nostalgic(怀旧的). Walking through my neighborhood on a fall afternoon reminds me of a time not too long ago when sounds of children filled the air, children playing games on a hill, and throwing leaves around in the street below. I was one of those children, carefree and happy. I live on a street that is only one block long. I have lived on the same street for sixteen years. I love my street. One side has six houses on it, and the other has only two houses, with a small hill in the middle and a huge cottonwood tree on one end. When I think of home, I think of my street. Only I see it as it was before. Unfortunately things change. One day, not long ago, I looked around and saw how different everything has become. Life on my street will never be the same because neighbors are quickly grown old, friends are growing up and leaving, and the city is planning to destroy my precious hill and sell the property to contractors. It is hard for me to accept that many of my wonderful neighbors are growing old and wont be around much longer. I have fond memories of the couple across the street, who sat together on their porch swing almost every evening, the widow next door who yelled at my brother and me for being too loud, and the crazy old man in a black suit who drove an old car. In contrast to those people, the people I see today are very old neighbors who have seen better days. The man in the black suit says he wants to die, and another neighbor just sold his house and moved into a nursing home. The lady who used to yell at us is too tired to bother any more, and the couple across the street rarely go out to their front porch these days. It is difficult to watch these precious people as they near the end of their lives because at once I thought they would live forever. The “comings and goings” of the younger generation of my street are now mostly “goings” as friends and peers move on. Once upon a time, my life and the lives of my peers revolved around home. The boundary of our world was the gutter at the end of the street. We got pleasure from playing night games or from a breathtaking ride on a tricycle. Things are different now, as my friends become adults and move on. Children who rode tricycles now drive cars. The kids who once played with me now have new interests and values as they go their separate ways. Some have gone away to college like me, a few got married, two went into the army, and one went to prison. Watching all these people grow up and go away makes me long for the good old days. Perhaps the biggest change on my street is the fact that the city is going to turn my precious hill into several lots for now homes. For sixteen years, the view out of my kitchen window has been a view of that hill. The hill was a fundamental part of my childhood life; it was the hub of social activity for the children of my street. We spent hours there building forts, sledding, and playing tag. The view out of my kitchen window now is very different; it is one of tractors and dump trucks tearing up the hill. When the hill goes, the neighborhood will not be the same. It is a piece of my childhood. It is a visual reminder of being a kid. Without the hill, my street will be just another pea in the pod. There was a time when my street was my world, and I thought my world would never change. But something happened. People grow up, and people grow old. Places changes, and with the change comes the heartache of knowing I can never go back to the times I loved. In a year or so, I will be gone just like many of my neighbors. I will always look back to my years as a child, but the place I remember will not be the silent street whose peace is interrupted by the sounds of construction. It will be the happy, noisy, somewhat strange, but wonderful street I knew as a child.24. The writer finds it hard to accept the fact that _. A. many of his good neighbors are growing old B. the lady next door who used to yell at him and his brother is now a widow C. the life of his neighbors has become very boring D. the man in his black suit even wanted to end his own life 25. The biggest change on the writers street is _. A. removing the hill to make way for residential development B. the building of new homes behind his kitchen window C. the fact that there are much fewer people around than in the past D. the change in his childhood friends attitude towards their neighborhood 26. What does the writer mean by saying “my street will be another pea in the pod”? A. his street will be very noisy and dirty B. his street will soon be crowded with people C. his street will have some new attractions D. his street will be no different from any other street 27. Which could be a good title for the passage?A. The Past of My Street will Live Forever B. Unforgettable People and Things of My StreetC. Memory Street Isnt What It Used to BeD. The Big Changes of My Street C“I dont think I can do this any more.” “Yes, you can. You only have five more radiation treatments to go. ” I held my wife Becky close.Ever since the breast cancer diagnosis(诊断), she had tried hard to be strong for the kids and for me. When her diagnosis came, my first thought was there was no way I could lose my wife. The doctors assured us the cancer was discovered early so we were feeling positive.Becky had received an operation and was recovering from it. After six weeks of radiation therapy(治疗), she was facing her final five treatments. She was weak and tired, in low spirits. Seeing her suffering, I felt so helpless and powerless. As soon as I was outside, longheld frustration and anger erupted in me like a volcano. I took a hammer and suddenly was swinging as hard as I could, beating heavily on the front porch(门廊). While doing so, I imagined I was beating my wifes cancer. With all my strength, I destroyed the porch.During the treatment, my wife had been very brave. She said she had it easy, but I dont think it was easy for her.Seeing the porch gone, Becky shook her head at the window. I came into the room, not knowing how she would react to what I had done.“Becky, are you mad at me?” She looked at me in surprise. “For what?” I pointed at the gate. “For tearing down the porch.” She laughed. “Look how sunny this room is now. I love that its bright in here.”“You comforted me in my darker hour, Vince. Youve found a way to deal with your own frustration. By destroying the porch, you let the sunshine in.”As I looked around the brightened room, I realized the light that filled the space was the light of hope that shone so bright after the darkness. We never did rebuild the porch.28When the diagnosis came out, _Athe author had little hope that his wife would surviveBthe author was determined to save his wifes lifeCthe authors wife refused to receive radiation treatmentsDthe author felt lucky that his wifes disease was not serious29The author went outside to destroy the porch because _Ahe wanted to release his frustrationBhe was disappointed with his wifeChe intended to let sunshine inDhis wife didnt like it at all30How did the authors wife feel about him seeing the porch gone?ASympathetic BAngryCUnderstanding DHappy31What lesson can we learn from the passage?ATragedy cannot separate loving couple.BA day without sunshine is like night.CTrue love is based on understanding.DNothing is impossible for a willing heart.DParents will do anything for their children. Whether it would be the food, clothes, or the place they live in,parents will always make sure their children have the best of everything. One of the biggest concerns that parents currently have is educating their children. They are faced with lots of difficulties when it comes to education for their young ones. Choices include private school, charter school, public school or home schooling.Fortunately for parents, there are a variety of different strategies that they can take in order to in-crease their childs overall intelligence. According to Ross A. Thompson, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis, a childs brain will actually reach 90% of its full size by the time they start kindergarten.Researchers at NorthwesternUniversity in Chicago concluded that playing a musical instrument directly affected the brain stem, the lower section of the brain. Moreover, children that learn an instrument at an early age tend to continue it when they are older. And numerous studies show that a well balanced meal is essential for a childs mental as well as physical health. Some other researchers recommended that a second language should be taught when children are in preschool. They state that three to four years of age is the perfect time and that any age under four would work perfectly fine for a childs brain development. The average child will learn how to read between kindergarten and second grade. Many parents can give their children a jump start by teaching them to read before they start school. Children could have an adequate background of the alphabet and sounds of words before attending school. This can be done by simply reading to them whenever you want. The more comfortable they get,the easier the process will be.32.From the first paragraph, we can infer that.A.parents find it hard to satisfy their kids various demandsB.parents meet a new challenge when raising their kidsC.parents have more choices in offering education to their kidsD.parents get actively involved in the process of their kids growth33.What suggestion may the researchers in the passage make?A.To train kids as early as possible.B.To try as many means as possible.C.To help kids develop as fully as possible.D.To use as many available resources as possible.34.What does the third paragraph mainly discuss about?A.The proper time to teach children to learn languages.B.The effective ways to help develop childrens brains.C.The vital factors to have a great effect on childrens health.D.The practical steps to arouse childrens interest in study.35.We can replace the words “jump start” in the last paragraph with.A.inspirationB. introductionC. suggestionD. promotion第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” Lao Tzu If you are in a city where everyone rushes, realize that you dont have to be like everyone else.
