Statistics had a mother who was dedicated to keeping orderly records of governmental units (state and statistics come from the same Latin root status) and a gentlemanly gambling father who relied on mathematics to increase his skill at playing the odds in games of chance. The influence of the mother on the offspring, statistics, is represented by counting, measuring, describing, tabulating, ordering, and the taking of censuses - all of which led to modern descriptive statistics. From the influence of the father came modern inferential statistics, which is based squarely on theories of probability. Descriptive statistics involves tabulating, depicting and describing collections of data. These data may be quantitative such as measures of height, intelligence or grade level - variables that are characterized by an underlying continuum - or the data may represent qualitative variables, such as sex, college major or personality type. Large masses of data must generally undergo a process of summarization or reduction before they are comprehensible. Descriptive statistics is a tool for describing or summarizing or reducing to comprehensible form the properties of an otherwise unwieldy mass of data. Inferential statistics is a formalized body of methods for solving another class of problems that present great difficulties for the unaided human mind. This general class of problems characteristically involves attempts to make predictions using a sample of observations. For example, a school superintendent wishes to determine the proportion of children in a large school system that come to school without breakfast, have been vaccinated for flu, or whatever. Having a little knowledge of statistics, the superintendent would know that it is unnecessary and inefficient to question each child: the proportion for the entire district could be estimated fairly accurately from a sample of as few as 100 children. Thus, the purpose of inferential statistics is to predict or estimate characteristics of a population from knowledge of the characteristics of only a sample of the population. 1 The meaning of statisticsThe word statistics has two meanings:1.1 In the plural sense it means collections of numerical facts and is widely used when reference is made to facts and figures on such things as population,crime and education。Statisticians call the figures which have been collected data。1.2 In the singular sense it means the science(or art)of dealing with statistical data。The collection,analysis and interpretation of data is called statistical method,and it is with this sense of the word that we are mainly concerned in this book。2 statistical methods2.1 Descriptive statistics, This deals with the compilation and presentation of data in various forms such as tables,graphs and diagrams。The purpose of descriptive statistics to display and pass on information from which conclusions can be drawn and decisions made。Businesses,for example,use descriptive statistics when presenting their annual accounts and reports,and the Government is a particularly prolific provider of descriptive statistics。In sum descriptive statistics is the branch of statistics that involves the organization,summarization,and display of data。2.2 Mathematical or inductive statistics, This deals with the tolls of statistics,the techniques that are used to analyze the data and to make estimates or draw conclusions from the data。In fact,inductive statistics is inferential statistics,is the branch of statistics that involves using a sample to draw conclusions about a population。A basic tool in the study of inferential statistics is probability。3 some aspects of the statistics 3.1 The mean thoughtMean is simple and important representative of research object. Mean concept almost involve all statistics theory. It is the basic idea of statistics. It tells us that statistical issues are from the general rule of development view. Emphasis is not the total scale or individual, embodies the concept of quantity and infers that view. So it reflects the overall view. 3.2 Variation thoughtStatistical studies the general characteristics of the same phenomenon. If the difference between each unit is in advance according to the given conditions can be constructive, it will dont need to use a statistical method.
