College Students Attitudes To Urban Vagrants And Beggars College Students Attitudes To Urban Vagrants And BeggarsAuthors:史庆超(PT1200086)-Report (team leader)陈 强(PT1200085)-Questionnaire&presentation汪 月(PT1200087)-Report&PPT2012年12月15日 College Students Attitudes To Urban Vagrants And BeggarsAbstract:Since the reform and opening-up policy be implemented, Chinas economic, education, science and technology has risen notably. Peoples living standard has promoted visibility. But we can not deny that the difference between the rich and poor is becoming more and more obvious. We always meet some vagrants and beggars on street or crossing bridge. They are always shabby in dress, some of them are disable physically, some are old and infirm. College students attitudes to the beggars not only represent the concern and thinking of the vanguard group to the marginal group, but also to a certain extent reflect the new ethics and value orientation in the period of social transformation. Moreover, the college students, as a master of society in the future, whose attitude to the begging personnel will reflect the attitudes of social public people to some extent. This report is commissioned to study college students attitudes to the vagrants and beggars in the urban city. Through studying these questionnaires, we can clearly see college students attitudes to beggars in the city. Finally we draw the conclusion about this and put forward some practicable recommendation to solve this issue.Key words: vagrants and beggars; college students; attitude; solution. 1. Methodology and procedureQuestionnaires are adopted in this survey. We posted the questionnaire on the Internet. The survey involved 26 college students at the age from 20 to 25.The respondents consist of 16 males and 10 females. Although the number of respondents involved in this survey is small, it still can stand for the general opinions of college students on begging. The questionnaire is comprised of ten questions and can be divided into four aspects. First, the main reason leads a person to be a beggar. Second ,students attitudes to the beggars. Third, students actions when they meet the beggars. Fourth, effective measures to help beggars or to reduce the number of beggars. Although there are only ten questions, we can figure out contemporary college students main views about the baggers. After gathering these questionnaires, we make charts to make our investigation more clearly and vividly. Through the statistics, we can get our conclusions.2. Results and discussionIn this part, I will give ten charts. Each chart is the result of one of the ten questions in the questionnaire. Bellow each chart, I will give some explanations to this chart.D. Hardly see 23.08%C. Once a week 23.08%A. Everyday23.08%B. Once every two or three days. 30.77%1. How often do you meet the beggars?Chart 1From chart 1, we can the frequency of people meet scroungers in life clearly. Only 23.08% of the participants have rarely seen scroungers. About more than 77%, roughly speaking, have often seen the marginal group, and 23% see these people every day particularly. So we can draw a conclusion that the vast majority of citizens have seen the beggars in our daily lives. We must pay great attention to the unusual group. 2. What do you think lead them to become beggars?C. They can not afford the normal expenses in the short term because of the family misfortuneD. The criminals take opportunity for profitB. They are disabledA. Their lazinessChart 2In this part, my partners and me want to know the reason to “Why so many people become the beggars in the 21 century” in college students consciousness. From above photo, we can see that different people have different opinions. More than 42% think that the physical disability of many people make them lose the ability to make a living. About 23% hold the opinion that their laziness is the reason. But there are also about 27% of the partners say they are occupation juggler. The difference is due to students different educational background and different experiences in life.C. Government and society should help them. 46.15%D. Most of them are liars. 34.62%B. What do you think of the phenomenon of begging?Chart 3 This question is similar to the last in some aspects. Still so many students think the beggars are jugglers. But most people consider that the government and the society should provide much more support to this group. D. othersC. Beggars do this by showing their talents and skillsB. The old and childrenA. The disabledB. The old and childrenA. The disabled4. Which kind of group do you usually prefer to help?Chart 4 The answers deeply reflect the college students are a group of people who are compassionate and sympathetic in mind. By contrast, most students will help the old or the young beggars and the beggars who show you their talent and skill in turn. Other students may help the disabled in physic. D. Just go awayC. See them and walk awayB. I will give them if I have some changesA. Giving them money5. What do you do when you meet the beggars?Chart 5 From the above chart, we can see what the participants did when they come across the beggars. Most people would give them small change if they had. But still about 38% of students would walk away from them without give something even the concerned eyes. I think these participants might have seen the beggars much times and they have been accustomed to the street scene, or they worried that the beggars were jugglers and they would get cheated by these shabby people. 6. How much money do you usually give to the beggars?D. More than 5 yuanC. Between 1 and 5 yuanB. Not more than 1 yuanA. NoneChart 6We can see from the Chart that most students will give beggars 1 yuan or below if they have small change. Approximately 20 percent students choose giving no money and 23 percent will give 1 to 5 yuan. No people give more than 5 yuan, and this may result from they have not make money by themselves. We can draw a conclusion that most college students are willing to help the baggers through giving beggars money.7. What influence do you think the begging causes for the society?D. Infects diseasesC. Weakens social public sympathy and attention to vulnerable groupsB. Disturbs social securityA. Influences social imageChart 7In this question, we have an investigation about the influence on society result from begging behaviors. Almost all people think that the begging will weaken the sympathy of the public. About 40 percent respondents hold the opinion that begging will have an impact on social image, and approximately one fifth peoples think beggars will disturb the social security.A. Government GovernmentD. Their familiesC. ThemselvesB. Social environment8. Who do you think should be responsible for the social begging?Chart 8From the chart we see, about four fifth people think government should be responsible for this. And about 62 percent people hold an opinion that social environment and the beggars themselves should be blame for the phenomena. Only a quarter people choose the opinion that their families should answer for this. Therefore, we can summit that the government, as a social manager and regulator, have an inescapable responsibility in solving begging action. Also the society should build a healthy and civilized atmosphere. Moreover, many so-called beggars with sound bodies should be blamed, because they can earn money and survive themselves by working.9. Have you ever heard about the Rescue Management Measures for Urban Vagrants and Beggars, which came into effect in 2003D. Never heard about itC. Heard about it but dont know it wellB. Know a littleA. Know it very wellChart 9When be asked “do you know the Rescue Management Measures for Urban Vagrants and Beggars taken effect in 2003”. To our surprise, about 80 percent people say they dont know. One fifth people say they had heard about it but have no idea about it. I think the university must be responsible for this, it should teach students much more knowledge about this.10. What measures do you think the government should take to help the vagrants and beggarsD. OthersB. Standardize managementC. Provide beggars with skills trainingA. Establish laws and regulationsChart 10As the question says what measures government should take to help the vagrants and beggars. About 80% of students support the opinion that providing beggars with survival skills training to make them independence. Half of the participants think that some relevant laws and regulations should be drafted to supervise or even ban begging.3. Conclusion and recommendationFrom above statistics, we can see that most college students are willing to give a hand to the beggars. This demonstrates that the contemporary college students are compassionate with the marginal group, and pay close attention to the group. However, there is a bad phenomenon. In recent years we know many fraudsters among the beggars, who gather money from citizens through take advantage of peoples sympathy, and even illegal or criminal groups force children to beg. It is no wonder that college students attitude to beggars is increasing ignored. The reasons of this phenomenon consist in the state system factors and beggars personals. Chinas social security mechanism, which is not perfect, results in the emergence of a large number of social injustice and unfairness. And some beggars are not high quality or enterprising, they love leisure and hate laboring. These factors cause more and more disharmony factors in the society, and also have an increasing influence on social public security. We should take temporary solution to effect a permanent cure. In order to weaken the number of begging group, government should start from the basic social security mechanism, and at the same time improve education system and the culture quality of every citizen especially those people come from impoverished mountainous area.Appendix: QuestionnaireQuestionnaire about the phenomenon of beggingYour gender( ) A.
