The bus stop was in our front yard, and my mom put me out there with the other kids to wait. “Stand here,” I was told, “and when the bus comes, get on it. When the bus gets to the school, get off and someone will tell you where to go.”The bus came, but I didnt get on. Instead, I went back into the house. When my mom saw me, I could read her mind, “This girl clearly needs more supervision(监督).”All through school my mom was on top of things, getting me to bed on time, getting me up on time, making sure my clothes were clean, my lunch was packed and my homework was done correctly She drove on field trips, stayed home with me when I was sick and baked cupcakes on my birthday. She didnt do anything huge; she did all the small things that go into raising a child. Twenty years after the failed bus ride I was a very young teacher. I was living at home, trying to save money for my upcoming wedding. My little brother was home from college and we decided to go skiing. It was a Wednesday night and my mom saw me heading out the door.“Where do you think youre going?”“Me and Steve are going skiing.”“Steve and I. And isnt it a school night? Are your lessons planned for tomorrow?”Always the mom. Always worrying; never fully confident that I would succeed without supervision. And always right.Twenty years after the ski trip I was up on a stage at a huge conference center in Washington, D.C., receiving an award for teaching. As I stood there, I saw my mom in the crowd. She looked relaxed, as if realizing that a lifetime of supervision of parenting had finally paid off. This is for you, Mom. Thanks for everything. 41. BWhen planning on a presentation, above all, know your audience and match what you say to their needs. Creating your presentation with your audience in mind will make sure that they will follow you. If your presentation doesnt appeal to your audience no matter how well you have developed it your presentation will fall on deaf ears. This leads us to the next rule: Know your material very well. Your material should be second nature to you. Practice giving your presentation with friends, in front of a mirror, and with co-workers. If you are speaking in a second language, make sure that you record yourself and listen a number of times before going to practice with a native speaker (if possible). Remember that you are an actor when presenting. Make sure that not only your physical appearance is appropriate for the occasion, but also the tone(音调) you use is well chosen. If your topic is serious, then be serious. However, its always a good idea to begin your presentation with an ice-breaker. Dont worry about making friends, rather lead the audience through your material in a calm and relaxed manner. Speak slowly and clearly, and remember to address everyone in the audience even the person the farthest away from you.To achieve the above goals, follow these tips when giving your presentation: Speak with confidence. Believe what you are saying and you will persuade your audience. Do not read from notes. Using notes is fine, but do so only briefly. Keep eye contact with your audience. Making direct eye contact with people will help them feel as if they are participating in your presentation. Bring photocopies. Dont just use a PowerPoint presentation. Provide audience members with photocopies of the most important materials so they can keep your most important points in mind. Know when to stop. This is very important. You need to make your case, but continuing for too long will only ensure that the audience forgets what you have said. 44. What is the passage mainly about?A. Tips to make an effective presentation.B. The role of a speaker in a presentation.C. Ways to help audience follow a presentation.D. The importance of practicing before a presentation.45. You may practice your presentation with all the following EXCEPT _.A. your friendsB. your co-workersC. a strangerD. a native speaker46. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 infers that you should _. A. treasure your presentation material as your second nature B. put your second nature into your presentation material C. fully present yourself in your presentation material D. be very familiar with your presentation material47. What helps you achieve your goals when giving your presentation? A. Avoid talking about anything you are not sure of. B. Make continuous direct eye contact with your audience. C. Present your material non-stop through your presentation. D. Provide photocopies of every detail about your presentation.CDear Mr. Next President, Iknow you arevery busy and are veryaware of the needs of the United States, but I feel I should bring a certain one to your attention. There are many problems with American education at this recent time; problems that are being pushed aside by rights issues(问题). I know these issues are important, but after all, theUnited States is going to be handed down to us some day. Many Americansbelieve that the United States does not emphasise science enough.Science, in all aspects, isvery important to everyday functions. Many countries are moving past the United States in science.America is also falling behind other countries in reading. According to NewsweekOnline, fourth-grade students from 10 countries and regionsincluding Russia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Italy, Sweden and Canadadid better than American kids, according to theProgress in International Reading Literacy Studyreleased by Boston College. Secondly, American students should be forced to learn a second language at a younger age. Mostof the United States populationarejust familiar with English, butwith all the globalization taking place, it is important for Americans to be at least bilingual. Most Europeans and citizens of the Middle East know at least three different languages. This problem of American leaders and educatorsnot taking advantage of their chance to educate the future generation is crippling manyAmericanswho are looking for jobs and keep getting pushed to the bottom of the pile. They are being replaced withforeigners who can speak multiple languages. This is hurting America. There are many other areas in which the educational system of America is failing, but there are ways to save us before it is too late, like raising teachers salaries. Truly, Americas current public educational system is failing to give students the skills they need to succeed in todays global economy. One mother I know said, “I know nothing is more important than making sure our children have a solid foundation for their success later in life.” I think shes right. I urge you to consider changing the current situation of education. America is in desperate need of a new educational system. America is in your hands, Mr. President. Dont fail us.48. Not only does it make you feel bad, it makes you do stupid things without noticing the risks and it can be self-destructive. As a result, civilised people do their best to hold back and mask their anger. Most of us treat our anger as though its unreasonable and unshowable. But like all emotions, anger has its purposes, which can be used to good effect.1. Anger can benefit relationshipsAnger is a natural reaction to being wronged by someone else and its a way of communicating that sense of unfairness. But society tells us anger is dangerous and we should hide it. What does this do to our personal relationships?Strangely enough, research has shown that hiding anger in close relationships can be very harmful. The problem is that when you hide your anger, your partner doesnt know theyve done something wrong. And so they keep doing it. And that doesnt do your relationship any good. The expression of anger, if reasonable and aimed at finding a solution rather than just freeing it, can actually benefit and strengthen relationships.2. Anger provides insight(洞察力) into oneselfAnger can also provide self-insight, if we allow it.A sample of Americans and Russians were asked about how recent cases of anger had affected them. 55% said that getting angry had led to a positive result. On top of this, one-third said that anger provided an insight into their own faults. If we can notice when we get angry and why, then we can learn what to do to improve our lives. Anger can motivate self-change.3. Anger reduces violenceAlthough anger often comes before physical violence, it can also be a way of re
