With increasingly frequent translating activities in terms of global economy and culture, more and more common, scientific and appropriate translation theories or strategies are in dire need to guide the translation processing, especially in the realm of literary translation. As for such a situation, Nidas Functional Equivalence Theory came into our sight. The Functional Equivalence Theory advocates the closest natural equivalent of the source text, which tries to evoke from the target text readers a response close to what the original readers experienced. And gradually this theory was becoming dominant in the circle of translation theory and practice. In recent years, this theory has also become one of the main topics of Chinese translation theorists and accepted by many of them. However, his principle of Functional Equivalence has not only enjoyed great popularity but also suffered from severe criticism in both Chinese and western translation circles. Some literary translators or literary scholars interested in translation often doubt the applicability of Functional Equivalence to literary translation, because it was initially intended for Bible translating.“Key Words”首字母大写,小四,加粗(空一行)各关键词间用两个字符即1个汉字的距离间隔,若一行写不下,转下一行与第一个关键词对齐Key Words: functional equivalence literary translation comparative study rhetoric style温馨提示:4-5个关键词即可,多为名词,小写。Thematic Study of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man 牡丹江师范学院西语系2012届英语专业学士学位论文- 4 -Thematic Study of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young ManThematic Study of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man题目用三号,加粗,居中(空一行)I. Introduction一级标题用小三,加粗,顶格This paper will pay special attention to the thematic study of the novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. II. James Joyce and A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man各段首行空4字符A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man details events which closely correspond with those of Joyces first twenty years. III. Thematic Study of the NovelThrough above analysis of the novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and the heros character development, 3.1 Major Themes of the novel二级标题用四号,加粗,空4字符Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work, which can be often revealed through the analysis of the plot of the novel and character development of the hero. In this novel, four major themes are revealed as following:3.1.1 Development of Individual Consciousness引文出处均用文中注,出处在文中置于括号内,给出作者、年代和页码页脚内容(小五,不加粗,居中)在第一行;正文页码在第二行,居中:1,2,3等等三级标题用小四,加粗,空4字符Perhaps the most famous aspect of this novel is Joyces innovative use of stream of consciousness technique, a style in which the author directly transcribes the thoughts and sensations that go through a characters mind, rather than simply describing those sensations from the external standpoint of an observer. Joyces use of stream of consciousness tecknique makes this novel a story of the development of Stephens mind. In the first chapter, the very young Stephen is only capable of describing his world in simple words and phrases.页眉内容小五,不加粗,居中引文过长,独立成段例子用小四,左右各缩进2字符,英文用斜体,汉语不用斜体, 用宋体字体 “His mother put on the oilsheet. That had the queer smell.” (Joyce 1996:7)These first lines of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man represent Joyces attempt to capture the perception of a very young boy. The language is childish: “moocow”, “tuckoo”, and “nicens” are words a child might say, or words that an adult might say to a child. In addition to using childlike speech, Joyce tries to emulate a childs thought processes through the syntax of his sentences and paragraphs. He jumps from thought to thought with no apparent motivation or sense of time. We have no idea how much time goes by between Stephens father telling him the story and Stephen wetting the bed. Moreover, the way Stephens thoughts burn inward reflects the way children see themselves as the center of the universe. Stephen is the same Baby Tuckoo as the one in the story his father tells, and the song Stephen hears is “his song”. As Stephen ages, Joyces style becomes less childish, tracking and emulating the thoughts and feelings of the maturing Stephen as closely as possible. 正文Times New Roman,小四,1.5倍行距3.1.2 Pitfalls of Religious ExtremismBrought up in a devout Catholic family, Stephen initially ascribes to an absolute belief in the morals of the church. As a teenager, this belief leads him to two opposite extremes, both of which are harmful.3.1.3 Role of the Artist A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man explores what it means to become an artist. 3.2 Motifs and Symbols Supporting the ThemesIV. A Brief Analysis of the Two Victims Through Their LivesV. Conclusion英文破折号: 中文状态下SHIFT+减号键,删除一个横线,直接输入下一单词即可结语属于一级标题,小三,加粗,顶格James Joyces novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man can be read as a naturalistic record of the heros bitter experiences and his final artistic and spiritual liberation. From the above analysis, the hero, Stephen Dedalus, goes through long phases of hedonism and deep religiosity. He struggles to decide whether he should be loyal to his family, his church, his nation, or his vocation as an artist, and eventually adopts a philosophy of aestheticism, greatly valuing beauty and art. At the end of the novel, Stephen is imaginatively soaringin flight away from Ireland toward a future of unfettered artistic freedom. All these reflect the themes of this novel deeplythe development of individual consciousness, the pitfalls of religious extremism, the role of the artist and the need for Irish autonomy. By probing into the themes of the novel, a new door is opened to study a novel in many aspects. From this paper, we can not only understand the novels deep meaning and themes better, but can learn a lot about the social background of Ireland in James Joyces time and the religion problem at that time. 温馨提示:1. 结语的字数一般为200字左右,最好一段完成。2. 结语应于引言相呼应,对在引言中提出的论点或问题做出总结或回答。参考文献小三,加粗,顶格ReferencesAusten, Jane.
