As the smallest of North American birds, they have long slender bills adapted for reaching deep into tubular flowers. Their wing beat is so rapid that it produces a humming sound. They feed while hovering and can also fly backward. Their throat feathers look black when light does not reflect the brilliant iridescent colours. They are fearless and pugnacious; Males have a pendulum courting flight with distinctive patterns for some species. They migrate by day, flying low. Their eggs are small, and white.
