His father was a lawyer, but a poor one, who lived at Florida, Missouri. The family was so poor that Samuel did not receive much teaching. He had to learn all that he could from the people whom he met. His father died when he was very young, and then there was even less money than before. Many of the men in this part of America worked in the ships on the great River Mississippi, and he did this himself at one time (1857). Where did he find the name Mark Twain? It came from the great river itself. It was part of one of the cries used by men who worked in the ships. When a man called By the mark twain! he meant that the river was two marks deep there, that is to say, six feet deep ( Twain is an old form of the work Two.) Samuel Clemens often heard these words when he was young, and he used them as a penname all his life.During his work on the Mississippi he met travelers of all kinds, and this helped him a great deal when he started to write. But the number of travelers became smaller when war started in America in 1861. Many of the great ships on the river stopped work. Samuel left then and went to Nevada with his brother, who was at that time Governor of Nevada. There, near the town of Carson, Samuel became a gold miner, but he never made much money at the time. He soon saw that life in the gold mines was not for him. He also tried writing for the newspapers in Nevada, and this seemed more hopeful. He found that he could write. He went to Europe in 1867 and visited France and Italy. In 1870 he married Olivia Langdon, and two years later he was spending nearly all his time writing. Among his books is his own story (1908). He is now always known as Mark Twain, and many people do not even know that his family name was Clemens. He traveled in America and in England, and went to Oxford in 1907. He was one of the great American writers of the time, and could make his readers laugh a thing which few writers can do. He died in 1910.36. Mark Twain was _. New medicines and machines are being developed every day to extend life. However, some people, including some doctors, are not in favor of these life extending measures, and they argue that people should have the right to die when they want. They say that the quality of life is as important as life itself and that people should not be forced to go on living when conditions of life have become unbearable. They saw that people should be allowed to die with dignity (尊严) and to decide when they want to die. Others argue that life under any conditions is better than death and that the duty of doctors is always to extend life as long as possible. I wasted a lot of time looking for the “typical” village. Yet no such thing exists. Conditions are quite different from village to village. But the villages I stayed in had much in common-poor, dirty and backward. Often the villagers themselves were puzzled and doubtful. Why had I come? I had put aside my work as a political journalist because my ideas had changed. I had come to believe that what was happening in the Third World was more important than anything else. But to understand how threequarters of the world population live, and what effect their future might have on ours, I felt that I first had to try and share their way of life. In the end I chose a mountain village because it was little cooler than those in the plains. I took the bus from town along a rocky road. Then came a rough walk down a steep path to the river. After this I began the climb into the hills. Whenever I stopped to catch my breath, there was a beautiful scene. After several hours walk the village came into sight.46.After the writer had arrived in India,_.A. he spent a year writing about the place he lived inB. he spent quite some time looking for a suitable place to live inC. he stayed in an Indian village working for the poorD. he lived in a Himalayan community for many months.47.While looking for a typical village, the writer found_.A. he was searching for the impossibleB. all the villages were exactly the sameC. he was doing something enjoyableD. the villagers were curious about him48.Before coming to India, the writer_.A. had been a successful politicianB. had made a decision to work for IndiaC. had studied India culture for some monthsD. had worked for newspapers and magazines49.The write decided to change his way of life because_.A. he no longer found his work interestingB. he hoped to live a peaceful life in the countrysideC. he wanted to find out more about the Third WorldD. he wanted to try his luck in a foreign country50.The village the writer finally chose to live in_.A. lay at the end of a rocky roadB. had a beautiful sight of the riverC. was a short walk from the riverD. had better weather than those in the plains.第二节:阅读下列材料,从所给的6个选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中,选出符合各小题要求的最佳选项,其中有一题是多余选项。_51.Eat more fruits and vegetables._52.Know the facts about fat._53.Balance your lunch._54.Mix it up._55.Use your manners.A. When people talk about balanced meals, they mean meals that include a mix of food groups: some grains, some fruits, some vegetables, some meat or protein foods, and some dairy foods such as milk and cheese. Try to do this with your lunch. If you dont have a lot of foods on your plate, its probably not balanced. A double order of French fries, for example, would not make for a balanced lunch.B. Eating in a cafeteria(自助餐厅)sometimes looks like feeding time at the zoo. Dont be animals! Follow those simple rules your parents are always reminding you about: Chew with your mouth closed. Dont talk and eat at the same time. Use your plate. Put your napkin on your lap. Be polite. And dont make fun of what someone else is eating .C. Choosing fruits and vegetables is like hitting the jackpot(获得胜利)when it comes to nutrition .They make your plate more colourful and theyre packed with vitamins and fiber. Its a good idea to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day, so try to fit in one or two at lunch. A serving isnt a lot.D. Kids need some fat in their diets t stay healthy -it also helps keep you feeling full-but you dont want to eat too much of it. Fat is found in butter, oils, cheese, nuts, and meats. Some higher-fat lunch foods include French fries, hot dogs, cheeseburgers and cheese. Dont worry if you like these foods! No food is bad, but you may want to eat them less often and in smaller portions. Foods that are lower in fat are usually baked. Some of the best low-fat foods are fruits, vegetables, and low-fat milk.E. “Grains” include breads, cereals, rice, and pasta. But as we learn more about good nutrition, its clear that whole grains are better than refined grains. Whats the difference? Brown rice is a whole grain, but white rice is not. Likewise wheat bread contains whole grains, whereas 100% white bread does not.F. Do you eat the same lunch every day ? If that lunch is a hot dog, its time to change your way. You should learn to mix it up when choosing what to eat. Eating lots of different kinds of food gives your body a lot of nutrients. 第II卷第三部分:写作(共三节,满分35分)第一节:单词拼写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)根据下列句子及所给单词的首字母,写出各单词正确的完全形式(每空限写一词)56.The cause of the accident still r_ unknown to all.57.They have no m_ of transport except for two bicycles.58.Some people are g_ for money and some for power.59.At that time in the southern states, blacks werent t_ as equal citizens.60.By c_ prices and offers, you can also make your travel budget last longer.61.It is l_ that they will win the game.62.If you want to work in a big city and live by the seaside, Qingdao is the p_ place for you.63.Although the meal was cold, it tasted d_.64.The town offers many shops, cafs and a wide v_ of entertainment.65.Martin Luther King, Jr gave s_ “I have a dream” in 1963. This afternoon , on my way back home, I saw 66._a group of young people playing chess below a tall 67._tree.
