That is why English has 3 many difficult rules that confuse people. Old English is very different from the English we speak nowadays. In fact, we would not be able to understand it if we heard it today. Before the 5th century, people in Britain 4 spoke a language called Celtic. Then two Germanic groups from the European mainlandthe Angles and the Saxonsoccupied Britain. Old English 5 of a mixture of their languages. (Both the English language and the English people are named after the Angles; the word Angle was spelt Engle in Old English.) 6 from place names such as London, very few Celtic words became part of Old English. At the end of the 9th century, the Vikings, people from Northern European countries such as Denmark and Norway, began to move to Britain. They brought 7 them their languages, 8 also mixed with Old English. By the 10th century, Old English had become the official language of England. When we speak English today, we sometimes feel puzzled about which words or phrases to use. This is because English has many words and phrases from different languages, 9 with similar meanings. Many things played a part in the development of this new type of English. The most important contribution was from the Normans, a French-speaking people who defeated England and took10 of the country in 1066. However, the Norman Conquest did not affect English as 11 as the Angles and the Saxons victory about 600 years earlier, which led to Old English 12 Celtic. French did not replace English as the first language. On the other hand, the English language 13 borrow many words from French. This resulted in even more words with similar meanings. By the later half of the 14th century, English had come into widespread use among all classes in England. Modern English appeared during the Renaissance in the 16th century. Because of this Modern English includes many Latin and Greek words. Pronunciation also went through huge changes during this period. Of course, this was not the end of the changes in the English language. The question of 14 English will keep on changing in the future is easy to answer. 15 is certain that this process will continue, and people will keep inventing new words and new ways of saying things. 完形(Part E) One big difference between British and American English is _1_ vocabulary. In this case, the older word is “autumn.” However, about four hundred years ago, the word “autumn” was _3_ “ fall. Later, the British _4_ to “ autumn”, while the Americans still use “fall”. Task ( P37)A report on body languageThis repot is about body language used in both China and the United states. It looks at how the same gesture is used in two different countries and how gesture expresses different meanings in the two countries. It also states the similarities and differences of body language in these two countries. The information was collected from my classmates through a survey. In order to conduct the survey, I created some situations where common gestures would be used and asked my classmates what these gestures meant to them. After collecting their answers, I recorded and analyzed them. Form the outcome of my survey, we can se that most gestures share the this meanings to people in both countries. This includes nodding the head up and down, shaking the head from side to side and the thumbs up sign. There are also some differences in the meaning for some gestures.
