UNIT 7Why Dont You.?Suggesting and ComplainingIntroduction There are many ways of trying to get people to do things for their own good. The expressions you use depend on:A) How likely you think the other person is to accept the suggestion, andB) Who you are and who youre talking tothe roles youre playing. Remember that suggestions or advice on personal matters are usually given only to close friends or when someone asks for advice. North Americans like to “do their own thing” and “mind their own business”. But if you do want to make a suggestion, there are several useful expressions you can use. They bear a different degree of directness and politenessfrom polite expressions to direct advice. Listen to these “I was wondering if youd ever thought of.”, and “Youd better.” These are two expressions at opposite extremes of directions. Can you think of the others between them?Answers to the Questions:1. Close friends or someone asking for them.2. A brief or strong expression such as “youd better.”3. No. They are only different in degree of politeness and directness. Background Information:Tips on Giving Suggestions and Persuading: In order to give good valuable suggestions or persuade successfully, one has to show his understanding of the person and the issue. There should be a heart-to-heart talk. For instance, a good friend of yours hints that she really wants to commit suicide because she lost her love. If you persuade her in such superficial ways as saying “Well, think about your parents. or Its not worthy, because your boyfriend is not a good man. There are many others better than he is,” you are not a likely helper. You should be aware that at that moment she is totally obsessed. She is about ready to give up on everything and she is not concerned with anyone, including her parents. The idea of having had a “bad” boyfriend can make her even less confident or completely forlorn. In this case, you should deal with it like “peeling a garlic”, helping her release the “energy” of love or hatred or whatever you may call it. It might be better to start with something like this: “If I were you, Id think of the same thing.” Make her believe you understand her and are willing and able to help her, and make her believe she is normal and mentally sound, hence making her more confident about herself and life in general. In order to be successful in these kinds of situations, one has to learn to think, analyze, and then speak or give suggestions.Tips on Complaining: Complaining is expressing pain, discontent, or dissatisfaction. You complain every day about the weather, the food we eat, the traffic, our work, money problems, and other areas of our lives. Although you can certainly be rude when you complain (“This steak tastes like leather!”), you usually try to be more tactful and polite (“This steak seems to be overdone.”). You also do not usually complain just to complain (although some people do). Theres almost always a reason for the complaint. The man complaining about his steak being overcooked might add a request: “Could you please have the cook prepare me another onemedium rare, as I requested?” Complaints take many forms, but the most common are simple statements of fact, followed by a question asking for suggestions or by requests. If you are complaining directly to the “blameworthy” person, a request might follow; if you are complaining to a third person, or about your own problems, you might want to seek for suggestions or advice. Sometimes you dont directly offer or ask for a solution to our problem. You just complain in an effort to get sympathy and cooperation. See the following example:Patient: May I see the dentist now?Nurse: Do you have an appointment?Patient: Im afraid not.Nurse: In that case, youll have to wait. You see there are many people waiting to see the dentist.Patient: My tooth is killing me, maam, I just cant bear it any longer.Nurse: Oh. If its a real emergency, I could talk to the dentist and squeeze you in. Sometimes, you dont complain directly about the thing. Rather, you choose more tactful remarks to solve the problem. See the following example and notice the function of the underlined sentences:Wife: That program on drug abuse is supposed to be excellent, honey. Is the game almost over?Husband: About 30 more minutesmaybe more.Wife: It seems like youve been watching it all night. I hope its over by 9:30.Husband: It probably wont be, but I dont mind if you want to change channels. Its not a very good game.Husband: Im sure. San Franciscos going to lose anyway. Part One Listening InSally: Do you feel like doing anything tomorrow evening, Peter?Peter: Yes, all right. What do you suggest?Sally: How about going to see “Star Wars”? Its on locally and they say its very good.Peter: Well, we could, I suppose, but I dont really like science-fiction films all that much. Of course, if youd like to see it.Sally: No, no. I dont mind. It was just a suggestion, thats all.Peter: We could always go to Daves party, I suppose. Sally: Dave?Peter: Yes, Dave Wilkins. You know. that chap who works for the B.B.C. Hes having a sort of house-warming party. Everyones invited. So if you fancy going, then we.Sally: No, I dont think so somehow! You know what Daves parties are like.
