Tell students that they will learn a passage dealing with English and its history.Step 3 SkimmingStudents are allowed several minutes to skim the text. Their skimming is based on the task of questions on page 22 concerning the general idea of the text.Step 4 Listening for the detailsPresent the questions on page 24. Let the students keep them in mind and listen to the text carefully to find the answers. Check the answers.1. Where did the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes come from? _2. Why can similar pairs of words be found in the English language?_3. What was the German plural form replaced by?_4. Which King of England used English for all official occasions? _Step 5 Intensive comprehension1. Ask the students to pay attention to the subtitles and divide the text into several parts._ 2.Read the four parts and answer the questions one by one. 1). Part1 IntroductionWhy English is a language with a lot of confusing rules?_2). Part2 Old EnglishPresent a flow chart according to the development of Old English. The teacher can choose to tell the students some basic facts as well as to ask some detailed questions with reference to the chart.And after completing the chart, students will be encouraged to give a short summary of Old English. If necessary, the teacher can give an example as follows:“Today we have learned the development of Old English. And let me tell you something about it. Before the middle of the 5th century, people spoke Celtic. Then 3 Germanic tribes the Angles, the Saxon and the Jutes invaded Britain. Their language mixed with Celtic and became the base of Old EnglishAnglo-Saxon. At the end of the 9th century, the Vikings, people from the Scandinavian countries, including Denmark and Norway invaded Britain. And their language mixed with Anglo-Saxon and became what we now call Old English. By the 10th century, Old English was the official language of England.”3). Part3 Middle EnglishDiscuss the answer to the question “What are the factors that contributed to the development of Middle English?”Have a further discussion within groups about the influence resulting from the factors and make a summary of the factors and the effects.4). Part 4 Modern EnglishStudents are asked to finish reading the last part and find answer to the following two questions.When did Modern English appear?_ What new factors are included in modern English?_ Step 6 Reading strategyNow we have found out the most important information and have got the main idea of the article, but I want the method you use when you are reading the article. This passage is a history article. Do you know what we should notice when we are reading a history article? And why?Step 7 Post-reading consolidation1.Say something about “English and its history”. Students can refer to the timetable.2.Students are asked to fill in the blanks of a short passage related to the text on page25.II
