Unit 7 Nice Weather, Nice Mood !Reading Weather and Life By Zhai Chunganu Teaching aims: Recognize the influence of climate on the various ways of life and make some proper arrangements. Identify the points and examples of the text and put the writing model into practice. Learn to accept your life as it is and appreciate it to the fullest ;on the other hand prepare for the worst at the same time. u Important and difficult points: How to understand the structure of a diary. Identify the points and examples of the text and put the writing model into practice. How to understand some expressions related to weather and feelings.u Teaching and Studying Methods : Situational communication method Listening and speaking method Task-based teaching method Group cooperative learningu Analysis of the teaching preparations: To analyze the teaching material and make proper teaching steps. To have the students preview the new words and phrases To search the Internet for related pictures .u Analysis of the students:As vocational school students majoring in Chinese Dancing Performance, they have learned English for some years and can understand a certain basic words and sentences, but they are still relatively weak in reading comprehension. However, they have shown a great interest in English now.Teaching Procedures:Divide the students into four groups and hold a competition between the four groups. See which group is the winner.【Preparations before classes】Preview the words and expressions in the word list on Page122. 【Activities in class】Activity 1: Leading in 1.Present the following sentences on the TTP to lead in the class, along with some pictures to help Ss think carefully. 2.Weather may affect our moods. Awesome weather may bring us happiness, while awful weather may make us sad. There are a wide range of weather conditions in the world . Can you name them out one by one ?Common weather: 3. Go on presenting the following : There are still some worse weather conditions, some of which can even bring about natural disasters. Let Ss continue saying them out. The following pictures can impress Ss. greatly and arouse their deep thinking. Worse weather : 3.Brainstorming to be continued is among the four groups of the class. When meeting one kind of weather, what do you think of it, pleasant or unpleasant? What arrangements will you make ahead of time ? 4.Give them discuss in pairs and then finish the following chart. This chart can help Ss. know some basic safe escaping knowledge and prepare for something unexpected in their daily life. Some people feel sad and frustrated while others stay optimistic and make use of everything they can as often as possible. Activity 2: Reading strategy-Reading a diary1.Show the question “How is a diary usually organized?” on the PPT to guide Ss into the study of the passage. 2.And then present the following sentences with blanks to be filled in. It usually starts with _. It tells readers _. Then it gives some important information to_.Finally it gives a_. It may include lots of words_. 3.Have Ss. work in groups and select a presenter from each one. 4.Check the answers and make some scores. 【Answer】the date and the weather; the feeling of the writer ; illustrate the writers feeling or point ;comment, that conclude the writers opinionActivity 3: Fast-reading of the first diary1.Ask Ss. to skim the passage quickly. And then have Ss. continue working in groups and discuss the following questions with each other. The questions include some basic elements of this diary and can help Ss. Grasp the inner structure.u What was the weather like that day in the first diary ?u What does the writer describe about the weather?u What is mainly talked about in the diary ? 2.After Ss. discussion among the groups, call some individuals to answer one by one. At last check and show the answers. 【Answer】1. Hot and sunny. 2.It was the hottest day ever in this country . 3.The different ways that people use to keep cool. Activity 4: Careful-reading of the first diary1.Play the tape for the Ss. to listen to. Before listening , Ss. are reminded to pay attention to the main idea of the second paragraph . And try to make the structure of it clear. 2.Show the sentences and related information in Para2 for the Ss to match.Sent.1 Sents.2-3 Sents.4-9 Sent.10 3. Talk about the body part of Para.2 with the class. It is about “Different ways to keep cool”. At first, ask the Ss. as follows: When it is hot and the heat upsets people badly, do the people turn to air conditioning to stay cool ?And if there are some other ways, what are they ? 4. Activity 5: Fast-reading of the second diary 1. Have Ss. go through the second diary. And ask and answer the following questions, which can greatly test Ss. grasping the main idea of the second dairy.u How did the father and his daughter have a great time ?u What was peoples reaction when seeing the heavy snow ? 2.There still exists the competition between the groups. And then check the answers with the class. 【Answer】1.They had a great time making a snowman in the yard. 2.People were so amazed by the “totally awesome” weather that some of them just stood there staring , as if they were watching a fantastic movie. Activity 6: Careful-reading of the second diary 1.Have Ss. read the second diary carefully. In order to examine Ss. clarifying its structure, the teacher will show the diary organization model which was discussed in Activity 2. Ss. are inspired to replace the parts underlined with some detailed information. It usually starts with the date and the weather. It tells readers the feeling of the writer. Then it gives some important information to illustrate the writers feeling or point.Finally it gives a comment. It may include lots of words expressing the writers opinion. 【Answer】Thursday, 8th Jan. happy and excited, having a great time making a snowman with his daughter, It was chaos for people going to work. Activity 7: Post-reading: further discussion1.Based on the first diary, Ss. are encouraged to give thought to the following questions to develop their ability of thinking in English. Besides some knowledge related to the topic, Ss are supposed to gain something more such as the attitude towards life whether hot or cool and so on. 2.Deep discussion between the teacher and Ss. Everyone has the right to voice their own opinions.And everyone can argue about someone elses opinions. While reading the first diary, do you think the writer feels sad from the beginning to the end? What will you learn from the writer and people involved ?u Learn to appreciate and enjoy life to the fullest.u Make use of everything you have.u Try to adapt yourself to surrounding things. 3.Do the same with the second diary. Meanwhile, in the second diary the writer feels happy and excited, but the ending is full of a bit worry , what proverb or saying will come to your mind at this time ? u After joy comes sadness.u Too great pleasure will bring about sadness.u Drunken days all have their tomorrows.Activity8: Writing 1.Good writers use details to illustrate a point. Find what details the writers used in the diaries to achieve their purposes. 2.To illustrate that people are so amazed by the “total awesome” weather, the writer of the second diary used the following details:【Example】My daughter was screaming ,” Dad,its snowing!”People just stood there staring, as if they were watching a fantastic movie. 1.To illustrate that last Wednesday was “the hottest day ever in the country”, the writer of the first diary used the following details :_【Answer】Detail1: The roads were melting in some areas. Detail2: The underground was a total nightmare- it was like being slowly cooked in an oven. 2.Whats the worst or the nicest weather you have ever experienced ? Describe in details how awful or great it was . While Ss. writing, they are required to follow the structure of the two diaries more or less. 【Possible version】The coldest weather I experienced the coldest weather in the winter of 2008. On that day the temperature dropped to 11 below zero degrees. Shivering people wore heavy clothes and wrapped themselves tightly with scarves and gloves and everything that might keep them warmer. On the street, cars couldnt get started and water supply pipes burst because of the extreme cold during the previous night. I went out to a nearby store and the freezing wind cut into my skin like the sharp blades of many knives. I hurried home and felt lucky that I didnt have to go out again.
