As the main character of Paradise Lost,Satans ambivalence catches all critics eyes and leads to centuriesdispute.This thesis is dedicated to make an analysis on the dual image of Satan,and strive to demonstrate that Satan is heroic in his rebelion against Gods breach of natural hierarchy and announced freedom,while he is devilish in his conspiracy with Sin and Death,and his seduction of angels and Eve.On the other hand,the thesis also attempt to check the factors that influence his dual character of image,from Miltons personal experiences and belief,and from the 17th century social background. And all these analyses lead to the point that it is too simple to say Satan is a mere hero or a pure devil,since he is a round character full of thoughts and emotions.His ambivalence is obviously thoughout the whole poem.Although the analysis of Satans image is a familiar topic in the criticism of Paradise Lost ,the opposition between hero and devil remians an interesting issue to explore.And this study can manifest Satans varied image from different angles and be of help to clarify the scholarly difficulty in giving position to Satan.Furthermore,the thesis provides readers to gain a fuller undestanding of Paradise Lost and the image of Satan in it.Keywords:Paradise Lost; Satan;hero;devil; ambivalence; factors.一课资料网-
