The government is trying to reduce the use of air conditioners.Although air conditioners make our lives easier in hot weather, they can be bad for the environment. The coolers use a great deal of electricity to function and add to the effects of global warming. But it is a vicious (恶性的) cycle. As temperatures rise, there will be more need for air conditioning.Pawel Wargocki, an expert at the Technical University of Denmark, told The New York Times: “The air conditioning causes a huge problem to global climate and energy use.” He added, “More and more air conditioners are used. Its very dangerous.”We cant live with air conditioning. But the thing is, we cant live without it either. Scientific studies have shown that if indoor temperatures are high in hot weather, people will suffer from certain health problems and have a lower productivity. For example, when air conditioners were turned down in Japanese offices, the room temperature rose to 28 or higher. As a result, workers started getting headaches, and feeling sleepy. They couldnt give all their attention to work and their productivity dropped by 2 percent, which means they did 30 minutes less work each day, according to Shinichi Tanabe, a professor of architecture at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. So the best way to balance our comfort with environmental awareness is to change our expectations. Most of the time, its not that the room is too hot, but that we are used to it being cooler.“The temperature many Americans find most comfortable indoors in summer 21C feels uncomfortable to most Europeans, who find it too cold.” said Michael Sivak, professor at a University of Michigan, US. He said it is because Europeans care more about the environment and are willing to accept a bit more heat in summer. Also, we can try to change our daily behavior. Open the windows to let air in, for example. Turning on the air conditioner is not the only way to make us feel comfortable.26 . What did the Japanese government do to reduce the use of air conditioners?ATo allow the workers to wear T-shirts to work.BTo stop the workers from using air conditioners.CTo let people accept a bit more heat in summer.DTo ask people to open windows to let air in.27 . The writer probably agrees that _.Amost people will be sick without air conditionersBglobal warming is mainly caused by air conditionersCpeople have to be used to living without air conditionersDwe should change our expectations to protect environment28 . We can learn from the passage that _.AJapanese office workers are less productive in summerBAmericans care less about environment than EuropeansCPeople in Denmark believe air conditioners are dangerousDEuropeans accept a bit cooler than Americans in summer29 . Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?AProtect Environment: Is it time to change business suits?BProtect Environment: Is it time to focus on temperature?CProtect Environment: Shall we change our expectations?DProtect Environment: Shall we stop using air conditioners? The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington,in the United States. It was a small coffee shop that roasted its own coffee beans. The coffee shops business did well, and by 1981 there were three more Starbucks stores in Seattle.Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, and he was curious about the company. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did, and he liked what he saw. He wanted to become part of the company. In 1982, the original(原先的)Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the companys head of marketing. In 1983, Schultz travelled to Italy. The unique atmosphere of the coffee bars there caught his eye. To Schultz, it seemed that Italians spent their daily lives in three places; home, work, and coffee bars. His experience in Italy gave Schultz a new idea for Starbucks back in Seattle.Schultz created an atmosphere for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Between 1987 and 1992, Starbucks opened 150 new storesand that was only the beginning. In fact, by the year 2000, three new Starbucks stores opened somewhere around the world every day!Today, Starbucks has thousands of stores, including stores in twenty-six countries. One thing that helps make Starbucks succeed in cities outside the United States is the way Starbucks works with local stores and restaurants. By working together with a store already in the city, Starbucks gets an understanding of customers in the city. This understanding helps Starbucks open stores in the right locations for their customers.30 . Sharing our thoughts and needs and listening to others are important if we want to keep relationships with others well. Whats more, we can feel that were valued and understood by doing so. Good communication is of course two-way it includes that one expresses his thoughts and the other listens carefully, and gives his responses from time to time. It sounds simple, but the problems in the relationships are often caused by poor communication. We either find it hard to share our needs clearly or fail to receive the information during the process of communication. We all have some common needs when we communicate with others, for example, to be treated respectfully, to experience joy, or to feel safe. But the biggest problem is that we do not really understand what others say. We listen and reply, or we are just deaf to what others say, pretending(假装)that we understand. If we can get a clear understanding of the needs which drive our own and other peoples behaviors, we will have a much better chance of being able to have deeper and more positive relationships. This kind of understanding is important while we are sharing good things with others, making a request or explaining something. When were angry with someone, our anger comes out, because we have some important underlying(潜在的)needs that have not been
