B After 21 years of marriage, my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie. The other woman was my mother, who has been a widow (寡妇) for 19 years. However, the demands of my work and my three children had made it possible to visit her only occasionally. That Friday after work, when I arrived at her house, my mother was waiting in the door with her coat on. She had curled (使卷曲) her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. We went to a restaurant that, although not elegant, was very nice and cozy. My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. During the dinner, we had an agreeable conversation about nothing extraordinary(非凡的) but just caught up on recent events. We talked so much that we missed the movie. As we arrived at her house later, she said: “Ill go out with you again, but only if you let me invite you.” I agreed. A few days later, my mother died of a massive (严重的) heart attack. It happened so suddenly that I didnt have a chance to do anything for her. Sometime later, I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant receipt (收据) from the same place mother and I had dined. An attached note said: “I paid this bill in advance. I wasnt sure whether I could be there; still, I paid for two plates one for you and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant for me. I love you, Son.” At that moment, I understood the importance of saying: “I love you” and of giving our loved ones the time they deserve. Nothing in life is more important than family. Give family members the attention they deserve, because these things cannot be put off till some “other” time. 24. The author describes in detail how his mother looked in order to _. A. show readers his mothers character B. stress how important the dinner was to his mother C. create an atmosphere of happiness D. show the importance of table manners 25. The author should be thankful to _. A. his wife, who pushed him to have dinner with his mom B. his mom, who paid in advance for the next dinner C. God, who gave him the chance to have dinner with his mom D. his children, who were very understanding and helpful 26. We can infer from the story that _. A. the author doesnt like his work and children B. the author and his mother talked about big events during their dinner C. the author and his mother saw a movie together after their dinner D. the authors mother felt satisfied to have a dinner with her son C Imagine going camping for over a week with several of your close friends. You would make sure you have plenty of food and things to cook and eat with. The food would have to be stored properly to prevent spoilage (变质). After finishing your meal, or at the end of your camping trip, you would then put away all the things and throw away the trash properly. Astronauts basically do the same thing when they go into space. The preparation of food is different, depending on the food type. Some food can be eaten in its natural form, such as fruit. Other food needs water to be added to it, such as spaghetti. Of course, an oven (烤箱) is provided in the spaceship and the space station to heat food to the proper temperature. There are no refrigerators in space, so space food must be stored and prepared properly to prevent spoilage. There is salt and pepper in the spaceship but only in liquid (液 体的) form. This is because astronauts cant put salt or pepper on their food in the normal way in space. The salt and pepper would simply float away. There is a danger that they could get into the equipment or get stuck in an astronauts eyes, mouth or nose. Astronauts eat three meals a day breakfast, lunch and dinner. When astronauts finish eating, they must throw the packaging (包装袋) away in a special trash container inside the spaceship. Some packaging actually prevents food from flying away. The food packaging is designed to be flexible (灵活的) and easy to use, as well as to save space for other activities. 28. We can learn from the passage that the food preparation for a camping trip _. A. is very troublesome B. needs many people to do C. is much easier than that for a space trip D. has some similarities to that for a space trip 29. Which of the following CANT be seen in a spaceship? A. A refrigerator. B. An oven. C. Fruit. D. Spaghetti. 30. Normal salt and pepper cant be used in a spaceship because they _. A. dont have any flavour(味道) B. take up too much space C. dont stick to the food D. make the equipment dirty 31. What can we learn from the passage? A. Astronauts eat more than three meals a day. B. Food in a spaceship is prepared according to its type. C. The food packages in a spaceship should be big. D. Most food in a spaceship needs water to be added to it. D Not all think laughter is the best medicine, but it seems to help. So scientists carried on a new study of diabetes (糖尿病) patients who were given a good dose of humor for a year to prove it. Researchers divided 20 highrisk diabetic patients into two groups. Both groups were given standard diabetes medicine. Group L viewed 30 minutes of humor of their choice, while Group C, the control group, did not. This went on for a year of treatments. By two months into the study, the patients in the laughter group had lower level of the hormones epinephrine (肾上腺素), considered to cause stress, which is known to be deadly. After the 12 months, HDL cholesterol rises 26 percent in Group L but only 3 percent in Group C. In another measure, Creactive proteins, a maker of heart disease, drop 66 percent in the laughter group but only 26 percent in the control group. “The best doctors believe that there is a physical good brought about by the positive emotion, happy laughter.” said study leader Lee Berk of Loma Linda University. And other research has found that humor makes us more hopeful. “Still, more study is needed,” Berk said. The research by Berk found that humor can bring about similar changes in body chemistry, which was proved in the new study. The research result will be presented this month at the meeting in the US. Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine shows that laughter causes the inner lining of blood vessels to expand, increasing blood flow in a way thought to be healthy. “Lifestyle choices have an important effect on health and these are choices which we and patients should pay attention to, rather than prevention and treatment,” Berk said in a statement this week. 32. Why did the scientists carry on the new research? A. To find out if laughter was good to health B. To discover the best medicine to cure diabetes C. Because the number of diabetic patients is the largest in the world D. Because diabetic patients need more laughter than other patients 33. After 12 months into the study, _ A. C-reactive proteins increase 66 percent in Group C B. the level of the hormones epinephrine stays the same in both groups C. the level of the hormones epinephrine has dropped D. C-reactive proteins reduced 66 percent in Group L 34.The underlined part “HDL cholesterol” in Paragraph 3 must be _ A. something bad to our health B. something good to our health C. a kind of wonderful medicine D. a kind of dangerous disease 35. In what way does laughter benefit peoples health? A. Blood is made thick by laughter B. Laughter makes blood vessels thin C. Laughter increases blood pressureD. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard. 36 So no harm doneright? Not quite. Temporary buzzing may be easy to ignore, but repeated exposure to loud noise will eventually cause seriousand irreversible(无法治愈的) hearing loss. A new study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston shows that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 19 are experiencing slight hearing loss, and one in 20 have mild hearing loss. 37 But the good news is that there are plenty of ways you can protect your ears from further damage and still listen to the music you love. Ask around. Put your earbuds in or your headphones on, and then ask a friend next to you whether or not he or she can hear what youre listening to. 38 Turn it down. Buy noise-canceling headphones.
