Teaching objectives:1) To develop the students reading ability, learn to use some reading strategies such as skimming, scanning and so on;2). To get the students to realize the importance of friends and friendship using the target words;3). To grasp some useful words and expressions in this passage, such as there is a time when, be crazy about etc.;2. Teaching procedures:Step 1. Pre-readingT: Hello, boys and girls!Ss: Hello, teacher!T: We talked about our friends yeserday and everybody needs friends.Q1. Why do you think friends are important to you?S1: We can help each other.S2: I can tell my secrets to him/her.S3: We can share our happiness and sorrow.T: So friends are really valuable parts in our life.Q2. What do you think a good friend should be like? List the good qualities a good friend should have .Ss: honest, loyal, helpful, reliable, sincere, friendlyT: We are talking about persons as our good friends. Does a friend always have to be a person?Ss: Yes/No.T: What else can be your friends?Ss: dogs, cats, pigs, books, computers, musicStep 2. ListeningT: Good answers! Do you think a diary can become your friend? There is a girl called Anne who considered her diary as her best friend. Lets listen to the tape to know why and complete the passage on p41.T checks the answers after listening.Step 3. Fast-ReadingT: Do you keep a diary? What do you think most people set down in their diaries?S1: Yes, I keep a diary. I write some feelings in my diary.S2: No. I guess people record something happened in their lives.S3: Yes. I would write my secrets in the diary.T: Just as you do, I also keep a diary and I always write my deepest feelings and thoughts. Sometimes I also set down a series of facts in my diary.Now lets get more information about Anne. Careful ReadingT: Maybe you havent had the same experience as hers, but was there a time when you were forced to stay indoors for a long time?Ss: I was forced to be indoors because I had to have lessons in holidays, I was very sad and angry.T: Good. You can say it like this: There was a time when I was forced to be indoors because I had to have lessons. Try to use the expression like this.Ss: There was a time when I was ill in hospital, I had to stay in bed all day long and I wanted to go outdoors to get close to nature.T: Very good. So you mean you may be crazy about everything to do with nature. What else have you grown crazy about (everything to do with)?Ss: Ive grown crazy about Jay/super girls/NBA stars/computer games.T: Twenty-five months is really a long time for someone who had to hide. Do you think so? And lets read one of her diaries on the left to know how she felt after being in the hiding place for over a year.Read the diary carefully and answer the following questions.Q1. Why did she grow crazy about everything to do with the nature?Ss: Because she havent been able to be outdoors for over a year.Q2. List the facts in the nature that kept Anne spellboundSs: A deep blue sky, the song of the birds, moonlight and flowers.Q3. Why did she stay awake until 11:30 one evening?Ss: In order to have a good look at the moon for once by herself.Q4. Why didnt she dare to open a window ?Ss: Because they might be discovered.Q5. How had she seen the night face to face another time?Ss: She happened to be upstairs one evening when the window was open. She didnt go downstairs until the window had to be shut.Q6: When were Anne and her family caught by German Nazis?Ss: About June 1945.Step 5. Discussion (pair work)T: I wonder if you can truly understand Annes feelings when she was forced to hide. How would you describe her feelings as she was looking out into the night sky?Ss: happy/excited/scary/doubtfuf/eager/anxiousT: Its very common to see the dark evenings, but Anne at that time had such complicated feelings, why? Discuss with your partners if necessary.Ss: T: Common things would be precious when you lose them, such as friendship,
