Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs)These UFOs caused a lot of interest. Some of the reports about them are difficult to believe. Some have been explained in scientific ways.Others have never been explained. Here is an account of UFOs from a report.Dennis Burdens, who wrote an article, tells us that he once saw a UFO himself. He was having dinner one night with a friend near Tripoli,Libya, and after dinner the two men walked across a yard to his room to look at some papers.Burdens noticed that the moon looked strange that night.“It wasnt the moon,” was the reply. They watched the light and saw that it was moving. It seemed to be an object rather like a big plate. In some ways it looked like smoke with a light on it,but it wasnt smoke because it didnt change its shape. It was moving in a regular way. That is to say,it didnt go suddenly faster or more slowly, and it didnt go higher or lower. So the two men decided that there must be men in it.After that,Burdens said that he felt eyes looking at him.He was being watched in the darkness. When it was nearer, they noticed that the bottom parts were brighter than the top.The bottom was yellow and the top red. Then the object suddenly turned away and left Libya, moving very fast.On a later day Burdens talked to other people about it,and he found some who had seen it.They all described it in the same way.Could they all be mistaken?16Which of the following is WRONG about UFOs?AUFOs are usually strange objects flying high up in the sky.BAll the reports about UFOs are difficult to explain in scientific ways.CSome people began to seem possible when highflying rockets were built in the early 1900s.In 1903, a Russian teacher named Konstantin Tsiolkovsky figured out how to use rockets for space travel. His plan was the first one in rocket science to use correct scientific calculation.About 30 years later,a US scientist named Robert Goddard built the first rockets that could reach high altitudes.During World War II,German scientists built large rockets that could travel very far and carry dangerous explosives. After the war, scientists from Germany went to the United States and the Soviet Union to help those countries build space rockets. These two countries were soon racing to get to space first. Each of these countries wanted to prove that it was stronger and more advanced than the other one. Both countries also had powerful bombs.People in the United States were worried when the Soviets were first to launch a space satellite, which was called Sputnik. The Soviets were also first to send a person into space.Yury Gagarin orbited the earth in the Vostok I spaceship in 1961.The US government set a goal for its space program to be the first country to put a person on the moon. The US space program built a series of Apollo spaceship. These vehicles were powered by huge Saturn 5 rockets. In 1969,Apollo II took three men to the moon successfully.Nell Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon. The Soviets may have lost the race to fly people to the moon, but they built the first space station in 1971.The United States also built a space station. The space stations allowed people to live and work in space. Then the Soviet Union and the United States cooperated to hook two spaceships together in space. This action ended the “space race”Today a much larger space station, built by several countries together, orbits the earth.Another new way to go to space is by space shuttle.A space shuttle, first made in the United States in 1981,looks like an airplane.Astronauts who fly spaceships have used shuttles to help put satellites into space.History of space travelTimeEventsInformation concernedEarly 1900sHighflying rocketswere built. It made the ancient dream of going to space possible to sb.sb.is/was said to do 5Bget/be run over by a car意为“被车碾过”,表被动之意。 It/This/That is/wasthe first time主语have done/had done。9A get/have sth.done请人修理。 12A When askedWhen the man was asked,前后主语一致,可改为分词短语作状语。tired作the man的状语。 Forget it! 算了吧;Thats great!
