Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence. Given that this is the case, why arent students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit?First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isnt in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决) stay calm. Once the student feels calmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name-calling, and accusation only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control. After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speakers position. Then the two people should change roles. Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesnt mean trying to figure out whats wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesnt, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution. There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesnt mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, 64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves. Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country.21.This article is mainly aboutA. how to deal with school conflicts B. the cause of arguments in schoolsC. how to analyze youth violence D. the lives of school children22.From Paragraph 2 we can learn that_.A. violence is more likely to occur at lunchtimeB. a small conflict can lead to violenceC. students tend to lose their temper easilyD. the eating habit of a student is often the cause of a fight23.Why do students need to ask themselves the questions stated in Paragraph 5?A. Ever since then, the recording has been being transferred and soon she has turned Internet meme.According to the report, in not an anxious, nor a slow voice, Becky said thatthe teachers were always giving her extra homework on a Friday and therefore she wanted the demolition men to blow the school up, better with all her teachers in it. She also asked how much it would cost them to knock down as big an area as a ballpark. The clerks of the company burst into laughter the very moment they received the call, which seemed to annoy the girl, who questioned, “Is this a demolition company or a joke factory?” Only then did they bite their lips to keep from laughing and ask, “What for?” The girl gave them her proposal and then asked them some details of the deal. Before hanging up, she said emphatically that she would fax the company the plan of the school and her teachers names. As soon as the local station broadcast the telephone recording, the sweet and cute girl turned famous overnight. They added up to two dollars and six and a quarter cents. The bill was paid, and the woman was entirely satisfied. But the young storekeeper, not feeling quite sure as to the accuracy of his calculations, added up the things again. To his surprise he found that it should have been but two dollars.“Ive made her pay six and a quarter cents more, ”said Abe, disturbed. It was an unimportant thing, and many clerks would have forgotten it, but Abe was too conscientious for that.“The money must be paid back, ”he decided. At night, he closed the store, and walked to the home of his customer. He explained the matter, paid over the six and a quarter cents, and returned satisfied. Here is another story of young Lincolns strict honesty. A woman entered the store and asked for half a pound of tea. The young clerk weighed it out. This was the last sale of the day.The next morning, when beginning his duties, Abe discovered a four ounce weight on the scales. It flashed upon him at once that he had used this in the sale of the previous night, and so, of course, given his customers short weight. I am afraid that there are many country merchants who would not have been much worried by this discovery. But Abe weighed out the balance of the half pound, shut up the store, and carried it to the defrauded customer. I think my young readers will begin to see that the name so often given, in later times to President Lincoln, of “Honest Old Abe,”was well deserved. A man who begins by strict honesty in his youth is not likely to change as he grows older, and mercantile honesty is some guarantee of political honesty.28We know from the text that Abe _.Acharged less for the woman Btricked the woman on purposeCwas careful and responsible Dwas confident of his calculations29From the underlined sentence, we can see that the author _.Aspeak highly of Abraham LincolnBlearns how to succeed in the political fieldCcomes to understand the importance of honestyDhopes to give readers some personal suggestions30What does the author mainly intend to tell us?ABetter late than never.
