It is a time when all the big events in a girls life were happening. However, though in poor condition, father managed to be present at every occasion. His doctor said that by focusing on all my future events, it helped my dad live longer. I guess so because nine days after my high school graduation, my father died. For the next week after his funeral, I didnt leave my room or even to shower. Finally, my mom stormed in and said, “Megan, get up. I have something for you to read.” My fathers doctor had sent my mother a letter. It contained the typical “I am sorry for your loss “sentences. But this letter was far from typical. I could physically see the pain this loss had caused him. In his letter, he wrote about how my father inspired him to change his life and the way he worked. He expressed his desire to become a person like my father, who cared more for the people around him and put everyone else first. After I finished reading it, I decided to live my life. I went outside and got a job as a summer camp advisor. I worked from dawn to dark everyday that summer. I gave everything I had to the kids and slowly they helped to heal me without even realizing what they were doing. My summer mirrored parts of the life my father led in his last few days. I had spent the summer months giving myself to children. It was not the senior summer I had always imagined. It wasnt all about me. I had learned the final lesson my father was teaching me, that in order to lead a rich and happy life, you must learn how to give yourself to others. By helping them you really are helping yourself.24. Why did the doctor send the authors mother a letter?A. To show typical concern for her family.B. To encourage her to live a happy life.C. To appreciate her husbands influence on him.D. To mourn her husbands death.25. What do we know about the author s senior summer?A. She gained quite a lot while helping the kids. B. She worked hard every day to forget her father.C. She spent it the way she had always wanted.D. She got a job as her father had expected.26. Which word can best describe the authors father?A. Fearless.B. Cautious.C. SelflessD. Wise.27. Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?A. My Senior Summer B. Dads Final LessonC. My Fathers DeathD. An Important LetterCAt the end of the spring semester in May, students taking Georgia Techs online Knowledge-Based Artificial Intelligence course received some surprising news. Jill Watson, one of the nine teaching assistants (TAs) that had helped them finish the challenging course for the past five months was not a “she”but an “it”an intelligent robot!Watson is the brainchild of Ashok Goel, who teaches the popular online course. The Professor of Computer and Cognitive Science in the School of Interactive Computing came up with the idea as a way to deal with the number of questions posted by students in the online forums(论坛).According to Goel, every time the course is offered, the 300 or so students that enroll post over 10,000 questions. The questions are often repetitive. This led Goel to wonder if a smart robot would handle the questions which require standard responsesthings like dates when assignments are due.Having worked with IBMs Watson technology platform in the past, the professor knew it would be ideal for his artificial TA: Jill Watson. The artificial intelligence system that uses natural language processing and machine learning to analyze large amounts of data has even been cleverer than human competitors on the television show. It would therefore easily be able to handle routine questions that required little “thinking”.The professor and his team of graduate students began by populating Jills memory with 40,000 questions and answers from past terms. Then came the testing stage. At first, Jill was not very good and often gave strange answers. It often got stuck on certain keywords. By the end of the semester, Jill had attained enough knowledge and skills to participate in forums without any management from Goel, or the other assistants.28. What surprised the students who take the online course?A. The course was interesting but challenging.B. A teaching assistant wasnt a real person.C. Jill Watson is a hard-working TA.D. They all failed to pass their course.29. Why did Goel decide to invent a smart robot?A. A number of students took his online course.B. A smart robot is cleverer than a human being.C. Too many similar questions are to be dealt with.D. A smart robot could be easily controlled by him.30. Why are human competitors mentioned in Paragraph 3?A. To criticize present TV shows. B. To describe Watsons operating principle.C. To express the systems advancement. D. To show the robots maximum load.31. What can we infer from the text?A. Students should deal with routine questions.B. Jill is mainly in charge of posting surprising news.C. The TAs give students homework at a certain time.D. Goel is satisfied with Jills present performance.DHeaven is where the police are English, the cooks are French, the mechanics are German, the lovers are Italian and everything is organized by the Swiss. Hell(地狱) is where the police are German, the cooks are English, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, and everything is organized by the Italians.Obviously the national stereotypes(模式化的思想) in this old joke are generalizations(普遍化), but such stereotypes are often said to exist for a reason. Is there actually a bit of truth in them? Not likely, an international research team now says.National and cultural stereotypes do play an important role in how people see themselves and others, and being aware that these are not dependable is a useful thing, said study author Robert McCrae of the National Institute on Aging. These are in fact unfounded stereotypes. They dont come from looking around you. McCrae said.If national stereotypes arent rooted in real experiences, then where do they come from? One possibility is that they reflect national values, which may become known from historical events. For example, many historians have argued that the spirit of American individualism has its origins in the experiences of the pioneers on the Old West.Social scientists such as psychologist Richard Robins have given several other possible explanations for stereotypes and why they may be incorrect. Robins notes that some stereotypes may have been correct at one point in history and then remained unchanged while the culture changed. We may be hard-wired, to some degree, to keep incorrect stereotypes, since we are less likely to notice and remember information that is different from our stereotypes. Generally, according to Robins, when we meet people who are different from our stereotypes, we see them as unique individuals rather than typical national or cultural groups.32.
