We were only a couple of blocks from home when I spotted a cellphone and a credit card sitting on the road. We took them home. We always find amazing things on the street and Maggie looks upon them a movable feasta chicken wing here and a barbecue rib there. I found another cellphone a few years back, too, and called a number in its phone book. I explained the situation to the guy who answered. He said it was his sisters and that hed come to pick it up, which he did.And that was that. No verbal thank-you, no written thank-you, no “heres a box of chocolates” thank-you. I didnt have time to call anyone on my latest found cellphone. I was pouring myself coffee when it started to vibrate(震动) and dance across the kitchen counter.“Whos this?” someone asked when I picked up. “Whos this?” I countered.(反问) “Sarah?” She was surprised at my knowing her name until she realized her name was on the credit card, “Could you send them to me?” she asked. She lives in Arlington, which is 2 miles from my house.“Humm, no,” I replied, adding that I thought she could come to get them, and that if I wasnt at home, they would be in my mailbox. A day later, when I was out for a run, someone retrieved (取回) them. There wasnt even a piece of paper put in the mailbox with “Thanks” on it. In this age of e-mail and cellphone, theres really no excuse. Years ago, I found something more precious than a $100 bill on the street: a drivers license. I saw that its owner lived a couple of blocks from me, so I called him up. He asked whether I could slip the license through his front door. “I guess I could,” I replied. And that was that. 41. Online computer game centers exist in many cities and towns throughout Asia. Facing the pressures of school and life, people tend to the virtual world, expecting a diversion from these problems. Too often, however, they can lead to problems and unhealthy addictions. This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. The country has the worlds highest percentage of high-speed Internet services. It also has a high number of online game players and related problems. In 2002, a young man collapsed(突然晕倒) and died while playing online games. He had been playing almost nonstop for 86 hours at an Internet cafe. Another young man killed his sister after becoming confused between the online world and real life. A 12-year-old boy stole US $ 16000 from his father and ran away from home. He did this to continue his obsession(着迷) with online game. Such problems, however, dont just happen in South Korea. They are spreading to other parts of Asia, as well. What kinds of people develop online game addiction? What does the problem look like? Dr SueHuei Chen, a clinical psychologist, researches Internet addiction. She discovered some signs of at-risk individuals such as lack friendship and good social skills. Those problem individuals feel it so compulsive to play online games that they could sacrifice things such as school and family. They feel the need to spend more and more time online. And they become upset if anyone tries to limit their online game playing. How many problem game players are there? In mainland China, the potential number of problem online gamers is alarming. In 2020, the China Daily reported that China had 13.8 million online game players. Furthermore, it stated that 80 percent of these were under 25 and had signs of addiction. Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth. Make sure to keep control over your online game playing. If you dont control it, it can get control of you. 45. Care much for the young and improve their ability to get along with others.48. We can conclude from paragraph 4 that _.A. the demand for online services continues to growB. China is fighting a battle against online games. C. the problems caused by online games dont just exist in South KoreaD. in the year 2020 there were a total of 13.8 million Chinese visiting the Internet( C )It can be a shocking moment to hear your own, sweet, innocent child lacing his conversation with a few swear words, especially if you are under the impression that this language couldnt possibly be a part of his vocabulary. But as we know, children are like sponges(海绵), meaning theyll pick up all sorts of phrases if they hear them, which is why so many children use their first swear word when theyre still very young.Child Psychologist Dr. Joanne Briggs says “swearing and bad language usually comes before age six, and you either totally ignore it or say, thats not acceptable, we dont talk that way.”If your child does swear, what would you do? Sometimes when a child is very young, the temptation is to laughafter all it can seem quite precocious(早熟的). However, laughing will only encourage the use of foul language. On the other hand, punishment isnt necessary, either. Dr. Briggs says, “You shouldnt make a big thing out of it. Just simply say we dont talk like that here. But then parents must ensure that they dont talk that way. Often parents lose sight of their own language and some of this is being modeled at home. The model is probably the most important. Of course young children parroting a parent is one thing. But older children who use foul language are well aware of the meaning of the words and the impact they have. So how do you deal with the older child who swears? Dr. Briggs believes that “if theyre older children, swearing and trying to shock, you should simply say we dont like that. I cant do anything about how you talk away from me but when youre with me, Id prefer you not to talk like that and if you have to talk like that, Id prefer that you go somewhere else to do it.”So gone are the days of grounding or swearing a childs mouth out with soap. Instead your best insurance is to model good language on the home front, and to be clear about how you deal about inappropriate language with your child. 49. The writer wrote the text mainly to _. A. tell parents how to deal with their child about inappropriate languageB. introduce what is inappropriate language with childrenC. tell us not to be shocked at childrens swear wordsD. tell parents to punish their child with swear words at home 50. The climate changes may affect, and even threaten the lives of many people. They may cause many people to leave their hometowns for a new place and lead to great competition for the earths resources. Such changes will place particularly heavy burden on the worlds countries. There may be an increased danger of wars, within and between states. After twenty years of scientific research, the IPCC has come to a firm conclusion about the connection between human activities and global warming. Thousands of scientists and officials from over one hundred countries have worked together to reach his conclusion.“All the scientists from the IPCC are Nobel Prize winners, and they should have been encouraged and given more support,” said the Nobel committee. For a long time, Al Gore has been one of the worlds leading environmentalist stars. He became aware at an early stage of the climate challenges the world is facing. His strong mind, known by his political activity, lectures, films and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change. He has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted. Gore has decided to donate his share of the $ 1.5 million prize to an environmental organization. “For my part, I will do everything I can to try to understand how to best use the honor from this award, and I think it should be used as a way of spreading knowledge about climate change,” Gore said in a statement. “ It is our duty to protect the earth from warming and we have to act quickly.”By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020 to the IPCC and Al Gore, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to make more people realize the importance of protecting the worlds future climate, and preserving human life. Action is necessary now, before climate change moves beyond mans control.53.
