My first semester in college has come and gone and Ive had to balance a job in there too. Many times I wanted to cut one loose. Honestly I think I would have dropped out of school for my job because I need the money. For a while I made myself believe that school was disturbing my job and my money. Then not only was I trying to do work and school,I wanted a social life. Many times I found that there were not enough hours in the day but I realized I wasnt managing my time right. Hanging out with friends may have been wonderful but it wasnt putting money in my pocket or knowledge in my brain. Friends would have to wait. I was back on the see-saw(拉锯局面)of balancing work and school.Scheduling and planning became the key to my success. Making deadlines for myself and meeting them were important for my college experience. Planning was going well and I felt ready to try and throw a social life back in there. I tried to make plans with friends which didnt conflict with my deadline. That was actually harder than I thought. So once again my social life had to be put off. My friends were very understanding and encouraged me to do my work. Some friends would joke that I was all work and no play but sometimes thats what has to happen to get work done.As the semester came to an end I can say I learned a lot. Planning is necessary for organization. Writing a to-do list at the beginning of the week and actually completing it make me feel good, and its an accomplishment to be proud of .Not only have I learned something new on organization, but also Ive learned a new tool that I can take everywhere with me and use effectively.28Why did the author stop hanging out with his friends?AHe thought it was meaningless for him.BHis friends didnt like to wait for him.CHe had to work and study.DHe had no money to pay for the meals.29How did the author succeed in balancing work and school?ABy following his friends advice.BBy turning to his friends for help.CBy making plans with his friends and his teachers.DBy organizing and planning in advance.30Which of the following statements is TRUE?AThe author had enough hours to balance his job and school.BThe author had some difficulty in balancing his job and school.CThe author found it was easy to finish the to-do list on time with the help of his friends.DNone of the authors friends understood him and they all laughed at his planning and scheduling.31We may know from the passage that _Athe author has been proud of his college lifeBthe author didnt succeed in planning his daily lifeCplanning has become a useful tool for the authors lifeDplanning the authors task makes him feel goodDOne summer night in 1900,a reporter appeared at the door of Thomas Edisons laboratory asking for an interview. The night guard wouldnt admit him, even though Edison was still at work upstairs. The reporter,Remsen Crawford, said he needed to get Edisons reaction to the news that seven of his inventions “would become available to the public” when their patents (专利)ran out at midnight. The guard passed on the request to Edison, who replied: “Go back. Tell that fellow that I say Mr. Edison has never used his inventions alone and never expects to in this world. So the ending of a patent has no effect upon the wealth of an inventor.”Hearing Edisons response,Crawford wrote another note: “What do you mean by never used alone? Must see you.”Finally the great inventor admitted Crawford and gave him this statement:“In this country an inventor cant stop people copying his inventions. The moment he invents something, therell be pirates(剽窃者) rising up on all sides and calling it their own.”Thirty years later,Crawford was back at Edisons laboratory, again asking about patents and the money he got from them. Crawford asked him,“You have invented many things, including the electric lighting. Why arent you the richest man in the world today?”Edisons reply:“Nearly $10,000,000,000,they tell me,is invested in modern industries which developed from ideas included in my inventions and my patents. A billion or so dollars may be the annual total income to workers in fields connected with my inventions and patents. But Ive made very little profit from my inventions. In my lifetime Ive taken out 1180 patents so far. These patents have cost me more than theyve returned me. Ive made money through the introduction and sale of my products as a maker, not as an inventor.”Edison was one of the few fortunate inventors who knew that great engineering,on its own, earned nothing. The success of any technology lies in its business model and the protection of its copyright. Unfortunately,Edison said, the US had a “poor system” for protecting inventions.32According to Paragraph 1,Crawford visited Edison to Ainform him of the news Bfind out Edisons response to the newsCknow what Edison was inventing Dsee how hard Edison worked33According to the text, how did Edison make money?ABy selling his products. But why is it so good? 36Most teachers in Finland are professionals who have been selected from the top 10% of the nations graduates. In order to teach, they need a masters degree in education. Teachers also have a lot of respect and status in Finland.37 They work closely with the university thats closest to their school. They also have fewer teaching hours than any other school system in the world, which gives them more time to reflect on their teaching methods.Teachers have a great deal of freedom. Even though theres a national curriculum that says what children should learn, all teachers are free to decide how and when they teach it. 38 _Students spend fewer hours in school than pupils in other western countries. 39 This makes it easy for teachers to monitor students progress. There are also specialized assistants in the classroom to help the teacher. If a child is falling behind, the teaching staff create a plan to meet that childs personal needs. If a child is going really well, staff will pay attention to this too. 40Clearly, a lot of factors determine how well students do in class. But Finland seems to have created the perfect system!A. Teachers also set their own lessons and choose the textbooks for the classes.B. Here are a few possible reasons.C. Class sizes are rarely over 20 students.D.
