She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modern Dance.Earlier in her life, however, Graham did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on. So Grahams parents didnt approve of her desire to dance at the beginning. Until the mid-1910s, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing. In 1936, Graham made her defining work, Chronicle, which signaled the beginning of a new era in modern dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner. Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes.Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy. Once again, she met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didnt give up. Her last completed ballet was 1990s Maple Leaf Rag. “A Dancers World” is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1976. She was the first dancer to receive the countrys highest civilian honor. She died in 1991 at the age of ninety-six. In 1998 , Time magazine listed her as the “Dancer of the Century” and as one of the most important people of the twentieth century.28Why are some famous people mentioned in Paragraph 1?ATo show Martha Graham was influenced greatly by them.BTo show Martha Graham kept in touch with them regularly.CTo show Martha Graham had a great effect on modern dance.DTo show Martha Graham learned something from them.29Why did Martha Grahams parents disagree on her desire to dance at first?AShe was too old to learn dance.BDance was seen as a lower art at that time.CThere was no academic school to teach dancing.DHer family was too poor to afford her tuition.30When Martha Graham continued to dance in her 70s, she_.Awas warmly welcomed by the youthBachieved huge success once againCreceived many awards for her ageDwas attacked by some people31Whats the text mainly about?AThe background of modern dance.BThe development of modern dance.CMartha Graham and her achievements in dance.DThe awards Martha Graham won in her life.DThe Leaning Tower of Pisa(比萨斜塔) has never stood straight. The building s lean has puzzled engineers for hundreds of years. Engineers began building the hell tower in Italy in 1173. It took more than 200 years to finish. It was built on unexpectedly soft ground and the tower began to lean before it was done. The mistake has made the building one of the world s strange sights. How can something so unstable last for hundreds of years? The tower has survived two world wars, millions of visitors, and four strong earthquakes. Engineering Professor George Mylonakis wanted to know why. He studied the ground beneath the building and looked at how soil affects the building and how well it stands up.Mylonakis and other engineers came up with an answer about the tower. The answer has to do with the soft ground under the tower. The engineers found other important reasons, too. The tower is very tall and is made of stone that makes it stiff. Its height and firmness combined with the softness of the foundation soil cause the vibrational(振动的) characteristics of the structure lo be improved considerably in such a way that the tower does not resonate(共振) with earthquake ground motion. So during an earthquake, the tower does not shake as much as the earth under it.Still, Mylonakis said the tower had almost fallen since it continued to lean more as the soft ground settled under it. In the early 1990s, it was in real danger of falling and the Italian government closed the tower to visitors and started to save it. Crews gradually began to take out small amounts of soil from the high north side. With less soil under it, that side of the tower sank slightly. Engineers also fixed equipment that allows them to make adjustments to the water pressure beneath the tower, further controlling how much the tower leans. The building still leans. It just leans a bit less than before. Most importantly, the tower is no longer in danger. John Burland worked on the project to save the tower. He said it is highly unlikely that the soft ground under the tower will cause it to fall and only a very large earthquake would knock down the tower.32.Why did George Mylonakis study the leaning Tower of Pisa?A.To find out why it leans.B.To explore why it still stands.C.To call on people to save it.D.To research the soft ground under it.33. What does the underlined word stiff in Paragraph 3 refer to?A.shaky. B.sinking.C.solid. D.splendid.34.What measure was taken to save the tower in the early 1990s?A.Limit the number of visitors.B.Remove soil from two sides.C.Monitor the amount of soil water.D.Make the tower lower in the north.35. What do John Burlands words suggest in the last paragraph?A.The tower is safe in most cases.B.The tower still leans in danger.C.The tower may fall due to the soft ground.D.The tower will stand even if large earthquakes hit.第二节(共 5 小题; 每小题 2 分, 满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Benefits of SportsDoing sports is a physical, mental and social adventure. It s a great way for children to take a break from academics and release extra energy. It also helps them lead fuller and happier lives as regular sports have proven to improve overall well-being.The physical benefits of doing sports are probably the most obvious. Regardless of your fitness level when you start playing sports, youll notice an increase in your overall fitness once you re involved. 36 Basketball players focus on strength training; football players work on speed while track athletes train through longer runs. The training process helps promote physical fitness and performances in competitions.37 Playing sports contributes to mental health, helping to increase confidence and self-worth. A pat on the back, high-five from a teammate, or handshake after a match really boosts a childs confidence. Words of praise and encouragement from the coach, parents and other players raise the self-worth. 38 So after a game, its a better idea to ask “Did you enjoy the game?” rather than “Did you win?”Children who participate in sports might also benefit from the social aspect, feeling part of a group, building up accountability and leadership. 39 Teamwork involves both being dependable as a teammate and learning to rely on your teammates to achieve a positive outcome. Teamwork breeds accountability and challenges you to be responsible for your actions. Being part of a team gives you an opportunity to be a leader.Discipline is another social advantage. Most organized sports require a strict training and practice schedule. As a student-athlete, you need to balance academics and athletics. 40There is no shortage of reasons to find a sport to get involved in. Are you ready to go? Pick one and get moving!A. It s not just your body that benefits from sports.B. Therefore, playing sports is going to make you more fit.C. But remember, a childs self-worth should not be distinguished by victory or loss.D. If you play group sports, youll be part of a team that takes direction from a coach.E. Nearly every sport requires physical activity and the skills needed to be competitive.F. Among these, learning how to function as part of a team is the most important advantage.G. Only with strict discipline can you be successful both in the classroom and in the sports field. In one of my college classes, we were required to do an act of kindness.
