Period Destinations (Unit 15 SEFC Book 2B)by Yingxia Li (李颖霞)from Nanan No. 1 Middle SchoolApril 9, 2020 Lesson Interpretation: Period 3 Reading: Destinations (Unit 15 SEFC Book 2B)Ladies and gentlemen, leaders and teachers: Good morning. Today Im so glad to have an opportunity to talk about some of my teaching ideas. The lesson I am going to talk about is Destinations,the third period of Unit 15 in SEFC Book 2B. My lesson interpretation today will be made up of six parts: Part I: The Analysis of the Teaching Material Part II: The Analysis of Students Part III: The Analysis of Teaching Methods and Teaching Aids Part IV: The Analysis of Learning Methods Part V: The Analysis of The Teaching Procedure Part VI: The Analysis of Blackboard Design Part VII: The Analysis of Teaching EvaluationPart I The Analysis of the Teaching Material1. Status and Functions of the teaching material: This part is a reading passage about travelling, which plays a very important role in this unit. Students are interested in travelling, especially travelling abroad. However, the questions lie in that they still dont know how to choose a destination, how to read travelling brochures about foreign places of interest in English, how to search for information about travelling, how to introduce places of interest to foreigners, how to make a travel plan, how to protect the environment when travelling, etc. So this lesson is intended to both improve students ability of reading articles about travelling, and to enable them to do some travelling-related work based on what they have learnt from this passage. 2. Teaching goals and Requirments: 1)Ability goals: a. to improve students ability of reading articles about travelling; b. to enable students to learn how to introduce a place of interest to travellers in English; c. to enable them to search for information and do a presentation in groups, through which to improve their communicative and cooperative abilities. 2) Emotional goal: to bring out students love and cherishing for life, nature, the environment and the world3. Teaching important points and difficult points: 1) Help the students to understand some difficult sentences. 2) Make students grasp the writing structure and techniques of this passage. 3) Help students with the presentation Part II The Analysis of students: 1. About students interest and difficulties: Most of the students here are not used to expressing themselves in English, and also poor in their vocabulary. However, they are a new generation of youth, who have just come from the New Course Reform and take great interest and passions in showing themselves. And this topic of travelling is just one that they are interested in and one easy enough for them to say something about, so this will help to achieve the goal of improving their four skills of English. 2. About students difference and desire: The students English abilities are of different levels and their advantages are in different aspects, and I think only when their interest is brought out and their desire to show themselves is satisfied can we better achieve our teaching goals. So I am trying my best to meet their different requirments, for example, I will set questions of different difficulty levels and have them discuss in groups. In this way, students who are not so good at English will become confident in their English, while those who are good at English will realize that there is still so much for them to learn.Part III The Analysis of Teaching Methods and Teaching Aids 1. Teaching Methods To meet different teaching goals, I will apply different teaching methods and adopt some related teaching activities in this period, to make the students the centre of the class and better realize my teaching goals. The teaching methods and activities are as follows: 1) Task-based Method, including activies like skimming, scanning, etc. 2) Cooperative Learning Method, including activities like discussing and presentation. 3) Visual Teaching Method, including picture-showing and videos 4) Communicative Method, including question-and-answering, group discussing, etc. 2. Teaching Aids In this period, I will use the multi-media, a tape-recorder and a blackboard.Part IV The Analysis of Learning Methods As senior high students who have learnt English for years, they should develop themselves into a better independable and effective learners and readers of English. I will instruct them to learn how to learn by themselves more effectively, and how to read independably with a better result. Besides, special instructions will go to the preparation of the presentatiom and the method of doing it.Part V: The Analysis of The Teaching Procedure This part will be made up of four steps, including Pre-reading, While-reading, Post-reading, and Summary and Homework.Step 1 Pre-reading This step is aimed to lead to the topic of the destinations of travelling, and to arouse students interest in learning about the two cities of Rio de janeiro and Kitzbuhel in Brazil. There will be two parts in this step.(1) Lead-in: We all know that The one-week-long May Day holidays are coming, and many people are considering where to travel to. So I intend to choose this as a lead-in to the topic of traveling and its destinations, using three questions.Questions: The one-week-long May Day holidays are coming, Right? If possible, what do you want to do? (As to this question, the answers from the students may vary, but many students many say travelling. Thus, I will show my agreement and reasons and ask them the second question.) Which country do you want to travel to, China or any foreign countries? Why? (Many students will tell us their favourite countries to travel to and their reasons, and at this time, I will say: As for me, I will go to America, because I like basketball and also Yaoming. Then, some of them will say they would like to travel to Brazil, because they like football and Ronaldo, and Brazil is the country of football and the homeland of Ronaldo. So I can ask them the third question.) If you choose Brazil, which city or cities of the country do you want to choose as the destination of your travel? (Students have learnt geography and something about Brazil from the media, so they can think of some cities of Brazil, which may include Rio de Janeiro and Kitzbuhel. Then, based on that, we can come to the second part of pre-reading: Warming Up.)(2) Warming Up: In this part, I will play a short video of the country Brazil, which is aimed to arouse students interest and desire to know more about the two cities, and warm them up for the reading that will follow. Then, I will use a question Would you like to know more about Brazil and its cities? to lead to the part While-reading.Step 2 While-reading While-reading is the main part of this period. In order to enable students to gain a both detailed and overall understanding of the passage, and meanwhile improve their reading ability, I will design three tasks for them to finish.Task 1 Fast reading Just like reading a newspaper, we will first fast read the headlines, and then decide which article to pay special attention to. So here I design the task of fast reading, in which students will begiven about 1 minute to find out what each of the two cities is generally like. The question is: Of the two places introduced, which is a summer resort to us, and which is a winter resort? ( Answer: Rio de Janeiro /summer; Kitzbuhel /winter)Task 2 Skimming This task is designed to train students ability to skimming for the structure and the main points of the passage. The chart on the screen will serve as a guide to help the students finish the task.Destinations Rio de Janeiro Wanderlust:the itch to travelKitzbuhel4._1. Position3._2. _2. Downtown3._1._ When every answer is being checked, some pictures related to the item, will be linked and shown on the screen, for example, the map of the two cities geography position and a video of the festival Carnival. This will furthur arouse students interest and help them have a better understanding of the content.Task 3 Listening &Scanning This task is to improve students ability to listen to and scan the passage for detailed infortation, and also pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. The exercise to follow is in the form of True of False, in order to make it easier for the students who are not so good at English. ( ) 1. The best time to visit Rio is around March. ( ) 2. Carnival is a four-day festival. ( ) 3. The finest and most challenging place for skiing is Rio De Janeiro. ( ) 4. A walk around Kitzbuhel is a feast for the eyes. ( ) 5. If you have never skied before, you had better not go to Kitzbuhel.Step 3 Post-reading Finally comes the part Post-reading, which I think should serve as a stage for students to use their imagination and to practice their integrating skills of English based on the reading passage. Therefore, I will have students do presentations in groups, which can be in any form such as advertisement, short play, speech, ect. This task requires students ability of searching for and organize information, and the courage and the spirit of team-work to do their presentations before the whole class in groups. As a result, the abilities of the students themselves will be greatly developed, and meanwhile, other students will learn a lot of knowledge from the presentations of other groups. In order to assure the knowledge volume and effects of their presentations, I will give each group a topic to prepare ahead of time. According to my experience, the result of the presentations are always very good. Topics: 1) How to choose a destination; 2) How to read travelling brochures about foreign places of interest in English; 3) How to search for information about the places of interest; 4) How to introduce places of interest to foreigners; 5) How to make a travel plan; 6) How to protect the environment when travelling; 7) How to introduce Rio de Janeiro to tourists, if you are a guide; 8) How to introduce Kitzbuhel to tourists, if you are a guide in Brazil. Step 4 Summary and Homework At the end of the class, I will summarize the whole class and encourage students to travel more, think more and love more. And assign the homework: 1. to better organize your group presentation in written form and put it up in the Learning Garden in the back of our classroom. 2. to review the passge again carefully and make a mark where you have any difficulty, and try to solve it by yourself or discuss with other students 3. to prepare to answer other students questions about la
