Their work may enable abandoned farms to become productive once more.Tim Flowers and Tony Yeo, from Sussex Universitys School of Biological Sciences, have spent several years researching how crops, such as rice, could be made to grow in water that has become salty. The pair have recently begun a three-year programme, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, to establish which genes enable some plants to survive salty conditions. The aim is to breed this capability into crops, starting with rice.It is estimated that each year more than 10 m hectares(公顷) of agricultural land are lost because salt gets into the soil and stunts(妨碍生长) plants. The problem is caused by several factors. In the tropics, mangroves(红树林) that create swamps(沼泽) and traditionally formed barriers to sea water have been cut down. In the Mediterranean, a series of droughts have caused the water table to drop, allowing sea water to seep(渗透)in. In Latin America, irrigation often causes problems when water is evaporated(蒸发) by the heat, leaving salt deposits behind.Excess salt then enters the plants and prevents them functioning normally. Heavy concentrations of minerals in the plants stop them drawing up the Water they need to survive. To overcome these problems, Flowers and Yeo decided to breed rice plants that take in very little salt and store what they do absorb in cells that do not affect the plants growth. They have started to breed these characteristics into a new rice crop, but it will take about eight harvests before the resulting seeds are ready to be considered for commercial use.Once the characteristics for surviving salty soil are known, Flowers and Yeo will try to breed the appropriate genes into all manners of crops and plants. Land that has been abandoned to nature will then be able to bloom again, providing much needed food in the poorer countries of the world.31. Which of the following statements about Flowers and Yeo is true?A. They are students at Sussex University.B. They are rice breeders.C. They are husband and wife.D. They are colleagues at an institution of higher learning.32. Flowers and Yeo have started a programme_.A. to find ways to prevent water pollutionB. to identify genes that promote growth in salty soilC. to breed rice plants that taste saltyD. to find ways to remove excessive salt from soil33. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a cause of the problem discussed in the passage?A. Natural barriers to sea water have been destroyed.B. The water table has gone down after droughts.C. Sea level has been continuously rising.D. Evaporation of water leaves salt behind.34. The word affect in Paragraph 6 could be best replaced by _”A. influence B. effect C. stop D. present35. The centerpiece of the carnival is samba(桑巴舞), a typical Brazilian dance. Every year, tens of thousands of visitors and locals show off their passion and energy in the streets.Following the beat(节拍)of the Latin music, the climax to this street party is the float(彩车)parade, in which floats decorated with tons of fresh flowers by various samba schools and local communities move through the city. On the top of each float stands the candidate .for the drum queen, who is chosen at the end of the party. While most people are free to enjoy the celebrations, Rios police officers have to keep a clear head. Following the murder of three officers in a gunfight early last week, the Brazilian government has tightened security in Rio. The street fighting, robbery and sex crimes that accompany the carnival are very difficult to the police.Carnivals began in ancient Rome as a celebration at which people fed wild wolves, in honor of the citys founder who was said to have been raised by a she-wolf. Brazil gave a new life to this tradition and so. Despite the trouble, the carnival will remain a symbol of the countrys culture.36. Ford has now announced it will do the same.Three years ago, the company introduced the Think City two-seater car and a golf cart called the Neighbor. It hoped to sell 5,000 cars each year and 10,000 carts. But a lack of demand means only about 1,000 of the cars have been produced, and less than 1,700 carts have been sold so far in 2002.“The bottom line is we dont believe that this is the future of environment transport for the mass mar-ket.” Tim Holmes of Ford Europe said on Friday. We feel we have given electric our best shot. The Think City has a range of only about 53 miles and up to a six-hour battery recharge time. General Motors EVI electric vehicle also had a limited range of about 100 miles. The very expensive batteries also mean electric cars cost much more than petrol-powered alternatives. An electric Toyot RAV4 EV vehicle costs over $ 42,000 in the US, compared with just $17,000 for the petrol version. Toyota and Nissan. are now the only major auto manufacturers to produce electric vehicles.“There is a feeling that battery electric has been given its chance. Ford now has to move on with its hybrid program, and that is what we will be judging them on, Roger Higman, a senior transport campaigner at Uk Friends of the Earth, told the Environment News Service.Hybrid cars introduced by Toyota and Honda in the past few years have sold well. Hybrid engines Offer greater mileage than petrol-only engines, and the batteries recharge themselves. Ford says it thinks Such vehicles will help it meet planned new guidelines on vehicle emissions in the US.However , it is not yet clear exactly what those guidelines will permit. In June, General Motors and Daimler Chrysler won a court injunction, delaying by two years Californian legislation requiring car-makers to offer 100,000 zero-emission and other low-emission vehicles in the state by 2020. Car manufacturers hope the legislation will be rewritten to allow for more low-emission, rather than zero-emission, vehicles.41. What have the Ford motor company, General Motors and Honda done concerning electric cars?A. They have started to produce electric cars.B. They have done extensive research on electric cars.C. They have given up producing electric cars.D. They have produced thousands of electric cars.42. According to Tim Holmes of Ford Europe, battery-powered cars_.A. will be the main transportation vehicles in the futureB. will not he the main transportation vehicles in the futureC. will be good to the environment in the futureD. will replace petrol-powered vehicles in the future43. Which auto manufacturers are still producing electric vehicles?A. Toyota and Nissan.B. General Motors and Honda.C. Ford and Toyota.D. Honda and Toyota.44. According to the eighth paragraph, hybrid cars_.A. offer fewer mileage than petrol driven carsB. run faster than petrol driven carsC. run more miles thanD. offer more batteries than petrol driven cars45. Which of the following is true about the hope of car manufacturers according to the last paragraph?A. Low-emission cars should be banned.B. Only zero-emission cars are allowed to run on motorways.C. The legislation will encourage car makers to produce more electric cars.D. The legislation will allow more 10w. emission to be produced.DMore Than a Ride to SchoolThe national education association claims, The school bus is a mirror of the community. They further add that, unfortunately, what appears on the exterior(外部) does not always reflect the reality of a chosen community, they are right, and sometimes it reflects more!Just ask Liesl Denson. Riding the school bus has been more than a ride to school for Liesl. Bruce Hardy, school bus driver for Althouse Bus Company has been Liesls bus driver since kindergarten. Last year when Liesls family moved to Parkesburg, knowing her bus went by her new residence, she requested to ride the same bus. This year Liesl is a senior and will enjoy her last year riding the bus. She says, Its been a great ride so far! My bus driver is so cool and has always been a good friend and a good listener. Sometimes when youre a child, adults do not think that what you have to say is important. Mr. Hardy always listens to what you have to say and makes you feel important. Her friends Ashley Batista and Amanda Wolfe agree. Bruce Hardy has been making Octorara students feel special since 1975. This year he will celebrate 30 years working for Ahhouse Bus Company. Larry Althouse, president of the company, acknowledges Bruce Hardys outstanding record: You do not come by employees like Bruce these days. He has never missed a day of work and has a perfect driving record, recognized in 2000 by the Pennsylvania School Bus Association for driving 350,000 accident free miles.Hardys reputation is made further evidence through the relationships he has made with the students that ride his bus.”Althouse further adds, “Althouse Bus Company was established 70 years ago and has been providing quality transportation ever since. My grandfather started the business with one bus. Althouse Bus Company is delighted to have the opportunity to bring distinctive and safe service to our local school and community and looks forward to continuing to provide quality service for many more years to come.”Three generations of business is not all the company has enjoyed. Thanks to drivers like Bruce Hardy, they have been building relationships through generations. Liesls mother Carol also enjoys fond memories of riding Bruce Hardys bus to the Octorara School District.46. the wo
