Unit 1 a time to rememberA: Oh, im really sorry. Are you ok?B: Im fine. But Im not very good at this.A: Neither am I. Say are you from South America?B: Yes I am originally was born in Argentina.A: Did you grow up there?B: Yes i did, but my family moved here eight years ago when i was in high school.A: And where did you learn to rollerblade?B: Here in the park, this is only my second time.A: Well its my first time; can you give me some lessons?B: Sure, just follow me.A:By the way,my name is Ted. B:And im Anna,nice to meet you.A: Hey hey, that was fun, thanks for the lesson.B: No problem, so tell me a little about yourself, what do you do?A: I work in a travel agency.B: Really? What do you do there?A: Im in charge of their computers.B: Oh, so you are a computer specialist.A: Well, sort of. Yeah I guess so.B: Thats great, and then maybe you can give me some help with a computer course Im taking.A: Oh sure, but only if you promise to give me some more rollerblading lessons.B: Its a deal.A: Where are you from originally? Yu hungB: Im from China, from near shanghaiA: And when did you move here?B: I came here after I graduate from college.That was in 1992.A: And what do you do now?B: Im a transportation engineer.A: I see, so you are an immigrant to the United States?B: Yes thats right.A: What are some of the difficulties of being an immigrant in the US?B: Oh, thats not an easy question to answer.There are so many things really. But I guess one of the biggest difficulties is that i dont have any relatives here.I mean i have a lot of friends,but thats not the same thing.In China,on holidays or the weekend,we visit relatives,it isnt the same here.A: And what do you miss the most from home?B: Oh, thats easy.My moms soup; she makes great soup.I really miss my mothers cookingA:Where are you from Ajay?B:Im from India.A:And when did you move to the US?B:It was in 1991.A:Are you studying here at the moment?B:Not now.I came here as a student,and graduated two years ago.Im working as a computer technician.A:Aha.And what was it like when you first came here,was it difficult?B:Yeah,it was at times.The main difficulty i had was with the educational system.Things are very different here.Teaching methods,everything is very different from what i was used to in India.A:And what do you miss the most from India?B:To tell you the truth,after you are here for a while,you dont miss anything very much.Um,but i guess the weather and my family are the things i miss.And the quality of life,the quality of life is much nicer back home,frankly speaking.A:Hey,are these pictures of you when you were a kid?B:Yeah,thats me in front of my uncles beach house.When i was a kid,we used to spend two weeks there every summer.A: Wow, i bet that was fun.B:Yeah,we always had a great time.Every day we used to get up early and walk along the beach.I had a great shell collection.In fact,I think its still up in the attic.A:Hey,I used to collect shells too when i was a kid,but my parents threw them out.A:You know what I remember the most about growing up?B:What?A:Visiting my grandparents house.You know,on holidays and stuff.They lived way out in the country and my grand dad had a horse named blacky.He taught me how to ride.I just love that horse and she loved me too.I used to really enjoy spending time at my grandparents house.And everytime I came back,blacky remembered me.B: Oh, memories!Unit 2 Caught in the rushA: Why is there never a bus when you want one? B: Good question. There arent enough buses on this route.A: Sometimes I feel like writing a letter to the paper.B: Good idea.You should say that we need more subway lines too.A: Yeah, there should be more public transportation in general.B: And fewer cars, theres too much traffic.A: Say, is that our bus coming.B: Yes it is,but look,its full.A: Oh no, lets go and get a cup of coffee, we can talk about this letter im going to write.A:So are you really going to write a letter to the paper?B:Sure,Im going to say something about the buses.They are too old,we need more modern buses,nice air conditioned ones.A: And they need to put more buses on the road.B: Right.And there are too many cars downtown, and there isnt enough parking A: Thats for sure.Its impossible to find a parking space downtown these days.B:I think they should ban private cars downtown between nine and five .A: Oh, you mean, they shouldnt allow any cars expect taxies and buses during the regular work day.Hmm that sounds like a really good idea.A: Excuse me, could you tell me where the bank is?B: There is one upstairs, across from the duty free shop.A: Oh thanks.Do you know what time it opens?B: It should be open now.It opens at 8am.A: Good, and can you tell me how often the buses leave for the city?B: You need to check at the transportation counter.its right down the hall.A: Ok, and just one more thing, do you know where the nearest restroom is?B: Right behind you, maam. See that sign?A: Oh, thanks a lot.A:Excuse me,its me again.Im sorry I need some more information if you dont mind?B:Not at all.A:Thanks.Do you know how much a taxi costs to the city?B:Well,it depends on the traffic of course.But it usually costs about forty dollars.A: Forty dollars? I guess Ill take the bus that means I have almost an hour till the next one. Where could I find an inexpensive restaurant in the airport? Maybe a fast food place.B:Go upstairs and turn right,youll see the snack bar on your left.A: Thanks very much, have a nice day.B: You too.Unit3 Time for changeF: What do you think?M: Well, it has just as many bedrooms as the last apartment. And the living room is huge!D: But the bedrooms are too small, and there isnt enough closet space for my clothes.F: And its not as cheap as the last apartment we saw.M: But that apartment was dark and dingy, and it was in a dangerous neighborhood.F: Lets see if the real estate agent has something else to show us.F: Well, how do you like this place, then?D: Oh, its much better than that other one. The thing I like best is the bedrooms, they are huge!M: Yes, they are nice and big.D: And there are two bathrooms, I can have my own bathroom. M: Yes, I guess you could.D: The only problem is the color of the living room. I really dont like those dark-green walls.F: Well, Im sure we can change the color if you want to.A: So, where are you working now, Terry?T: Oh, Im still at the bank. I dont like it, though.A: Thats too bad, why not?T: Well, its boring, and it doesnt pay very well.A: I know what you mean; I dont like my job, either. I wish I could find a better job.T: Actually, I dont want to work at all anymore. I wish I had a lot of money, so I could retire now.A: Hmm, how old are you, Terry?T: um, 26.A: So how were things going with you and Susie, Terry?T: Oh, you didnt know? She and I broke up a couple of months ago. We decided we needed a break from each other for a while. But I miss her a lot. I wish we could get back together again.A: Im sure you will.T: I really hope so.So what kind of job would you like to look for?A: Im not sure, but Id love something that would involve travel. And Id really like to move to another city. Im sick of this place. I need to live somewhere more exciting.T: I know what you mean. It sure can get boring around here at times.Unit 4 Ive never heard of thatKathy: Hey, this sounds good.snails with garlic! Have you ever eaten snails?John: No, I havent.Kathy: Oh, theyre delicious! I had them last time. Like to try some?John: No, thanks. They sound strange.Waitress: Have you decided on an appetizer yet?Kathy: Yes. Ill have the snails, please.Waitress: And you, sir?John: I think Ill have the fried brains.Kathy: Fried brains? Now,that really sounds strange!Kathy:Oh,good!Here comes the waitress now!Waitress: Here are your snails, madam! And for you, sir, the fried brains.John: Thank you!Kathy: Hmm, these snails are delicious. how are the brains?John:Well,I think they areYuck!Oh,sorry!I guess the brains are pretty strange after all!Um,I think Im going to order something else if you dont mind!Kathy: Oh, sure, go ahead!John: Miss, excuse me, miss!Waitress: Yes?John: Uh, I really dont care for this appetizer.could you bring me something else?Waitress: Yes,of course.What would you like instead?Kathy: Try the snails.John:No,I dont think so.Ill tell you what.Just forget an appetizer for me.and bring me a nice,juicy hamburger,medium rare.with french fries and a large soda!Kate: Whats your favorite snack?Jim: Oh, its a sandwich with peanut butter, honey, and a banana. Its really delicious!Kate: Ugh! Ive never heard of that! How do you make it?Jim: Well, first, you take two slices of bread and spread peanut butter on them. Then cut a banana into small pieces and put them on one of the slices of bread. Finally, pour some honey over the bananas and put the other slice of bread on top. Yum!Kate: Yuck! It sounds awful!Kate: Ill tell you what my favorite snack is, baked apple.Jim: Baked apple? Kate: uh-huh, its delicious and healthy!Jim: So, how do you make it?Kate: You take out the core of the apple with an apple corer. Then you fill the center of the apple with brown sugar and some raisins. Next, put it in a pan with a little water, and bake it in the ovan for about forty five minutes.Jim: Mmm, that does sound good. Unit 5 Going placeA: Im so excited, we have two weeks off! What are you going to do?B:Im not sure!I guess Ill just stay home,maybe Ill catch up on my reading!What about you?Any plans?A: well, my parents have rented a condominium in Florida.Im going to take long walks along the beach everyday, and do lots of swimming.B: Sounds great!A: say, why dont you come with us? we have plenty of room! B:Do you mean it? Id love to!A: so what are you planning to do for your vacation, Judy?Judy:Oh,Im doing something really exotic this year!You know I went to Hawaii last year and iust stayed on the beach for two weeks,this year Im going white water rafting.A: Ooh, that sounds great,but what is it exactly?Judy: oh, well, you know its in Colorado. they have all these trips down the rapids.the water gets really rough!I think itll be really exciting!oh Im doing some rock climbing too.A: And you call that a vacation!D: hey mom, I want to backpack around Europe this summer, what do you think?M: Backpack around Europe? That sounds dangerous, you shoudnt go by yourself.you ought to go with someone.D: Yes, Ive thought of that!M: And youd better talk to your father first.D: I already did, he thinks its a great idea! He wants to come with me.Unit 6 sure no problemMr. Field: Jason. Jason! Turn down the TV a little, please.Jason: Oh, but this is my favorite program!Mr. Field: I know. But its very loud.Jason: OK. Ill turn it down.Mr. Field: Thats better. Thanks.Mrs. Field: Lisa, please pick up your things. Theyre all over the living room floor.Lisa: In a minute, Mom. Im on the phone.Mrs. Field: OK. But do it as soon as you hang up.Lisa: Sure. No problem!Mrs. Field: Goodness! Were we like this when we were kids?Mr. Field: Definitely!S: Have you noticed how forgetful dad is getting? He is always forgetting where his car keys are, it drives me crazy.D: And he can never find his glasses either.S: I know.D: You know what drives me crazy about mom?S: What?D: Those awful talk shows she watches on TV, she just loves them.S: Yeah, I think she watches them for hours every day.D: Oh, well, I guess theyre just getting old. I hope I never get like that.S: Me too, hey, lets go and play a video game.D: Great idea, by the way, have you seen my glasses any where?George: Hi. Im your new neighbor, George Rivera. I live next door.Stephanie: Oh, hi. Im Stephanie Lee.George: So, you just moved in? Do you need anything?Stephanie: Not right now. But thanks.George: Well, let me know if you do. Um, by the way, would you mind turning your stereo down? The walls are really thin, so the sound goes right through to my apartment.Stephanie: Oh, Im sorry! I didnt realize that. Ill make sure to keep the volume down. Oh, by the way, is there a good Italian restaurant in the neighborhood?George: Yeah. Theres a great one a couple of blocks from here. Try their lasagna. Its delicious!Unit 7 whats this for?Daniel: Hey! Nice computer! Whats this for?Andrea: Thats a modem. Its used to connect the computer to the phone line, so I can send faxes and access the Internet.Daniel: So you can go on-line and all that?Andrea: Yes. And I use the World Wide Web for finding information on astronomy, movies, UFOs -just about anything.Daniel: Sports? Cars?Andrea: Uh-huh. And I can exchange information with people, too. I belong to a chat group on astronomy.Daniel: Hmm. I just use my computer to write letters and reports.Andrea: Why dont you get on the Internet? Its not really expensive.Daniel: Maybe I will. It sounds like fun.Andrea: I have such a great time working and playing on my computer. But you know the best thing about it?Daniel: What?Andrea: The best thing is that I can keep in touch with my family and friends without having to pick up the phone.Daniel: Oh, you use e-mail, right?Andrea: Right! At the beginning of the year, I was spending a fortune on long-distance calls to everyone back home. But now, my mom and my sister have email .so we can send each other messages almost everyday.Daniel: That sounds great!Jennifer: I read the instructions, but Im still not sure how to use my cellular phone.Richard: Actually, its pretty easy. First of all, dont forget to turn it on.Jennifer: Got it!Richard: Then dial the number. And remember to press the send button.Jennifer: Thats all?Richard: Pretty much. Just make sure to recharge the batteries every few weeks. And try not to drop it. Its fragile.Jennifer: Good advice.Richard: And one more thing: Be sure to pay the phone bill every month!Unit 8 Lets celebrateLeo: Did you know next week is Halloween? Its on October 31.Natasha: So what do you do on Halloween? We dont have that holiday in Russia.Leo: Well, its a day when kids dress up in masks and costumes. They knock on peoples doors and ask for candy by saying the words Trick or treat!Natasha: Hmm. sounds interesting.Leo: But its not just for kids. Lots of people have costume parties. Hey. my friend Pete is having a party. Would you like to go?Natasha: Sure. Id love to.Natasha: So are we going to wear costume to the party?Leo: Of course! Thats half the fun! Last year I rented this great Dracula costume. and this year Im going as a clown.Natasha: A clown? Yes! You would make a good clown! Leo: Hey!Natasha: Oh, Im just kidding! What about me? What kind of costume should I wear?Leo: Why dont you go and as a witch? I saw a terrific witch outfit at the costume store!Natasha: Oh, a witch? Yeah, thats a good idea! So after I scary people, you could make them laugh!A: You look beautiful in that kimono, Mari! Is this your wedding photo?B: Yes, it is!A: Do most Japanese women wear these kimonos when they get married.B: Yes! Many of them do! Then after the wedding ceremony, the bride usually changes into a western bridal dress during the reception!A: Oh, I didnt know that!Unit 9 Back to the futureMr. Lee: The neighborhood sure has changed!Karen: What was this place like before, Grandpa?Mr. Lee: Well, there used to be a grocery store right here on this corner. Hmm. It was pretty quiet. Not many people lived here then.Karen: These days, the population is growing fast.Mr. Lee: Yeah. I bet theyll tear down all these old buildings soon. In a few years, there will be just malls and high-rise apartments.Karen: Hey, that doesnt sound too bad!Mr. Lee: No, but Ill miss the old days.A: How long have you been living here?B: Oh, for over twenty years. A: And have you noticed a lot of changes during that time?B: Oh, yes, quite a few. This is a much nicer place to live now than it used to be. Its much greener! When I first moved here, there werent many trees around. But over the last few years, the city has planted trees everywhere. Its made such a difference.A: Oh, I feel awful, I really have to stop smoking!B: So why dont you quit?A: Well, if I quit, I might gain weight! B: A lot of people do, butA: and if I gain weight, I wont be able to fit into any of my clothes!B: Well, you can always go on a diet!A: Oh, No, Im terrible at losing weight on diets. So if my clothes dont fit, Ill have to buy new ones. Ill have to get a part-time job, and B: listen, it is hard to quit, but its not that hard. Do you want to how I did it?B:Well, giving up smoking isnt really as hard as you think; I managed to do it so it cant be that difficult. You should try a nicotine gum. You chew it just like a regular chewing gum, and you dont feel like smokingA: Well, I guess its worth a try!Unit 10 I dont like to work on weekendA: Any interesting jobs listed on the internet today?B: Well, therere a lot of retail jobs.-selling clothes and stuff, but you have to work Saturdays and Sundays.A: hmm, I hate working on weekends.B: hmm, so do I. oh, here is a job in sales; its a job selling childrens books to bookstores. A: That sounds interesting
