Book Report 4 -The Grate Gatsby化工学院应用化学系应用化学班 刘文钊Abstract： This article is divided into three parts.First，its about The Grate Gatsby this storys background and the story covers the period of 1920s ,aturbulentperiod in America which is a brief and special period. Then I figured out the novels development after the second time Id finished it. Also its easy to be find that everyone has his special characters, or ugly, or upright, or persistent, or compromise. The final section is some personality analysis about the characters and my own attitude to the America at that time. At the end of the first World War, the second industrial revolution had just finished. As a victorious nation, America has surpassed the United Kingdom to become the worlds first great power. Cars, electric light and telephones are convenient for peoples lives. People dont think they will fight any more,and its time to have fun. They began to give up the moral standard of the system.They believe in money worship, hedonism. The cost of the economic prosperity is a society which is full of moraldegradation. And the story of The great Gatsby took place in this period.The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan. The whole word of the novel explores themes of decadence ,idealism ,resistance to change social upheaval that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the America Dream.The unfolding of the novel through Nicks description.Nick was born in the Midwest of the United states. Then he go to the United States New York study Business, and he would like to make a fortune. He lives in Long Island, and Gatsby is neighbor. Gatsby Gates is the same as Nick,both of them from the Midwest.He was born poor, but he was ambitious. After selling bootleg liquor and become rich cause this. He often held large-scale luxury party at home and banquet guests to show his generous.The purpose is to attract the daisy lover five years ago and win her heart.The purpose is to attract the Daisy win her heart again.Five years ago when Gatsby performed military service Daisy was his lover.But then while Gatsby to go overseas to participate the first world war,Daisy get married with Tom Buchanan, a son of a wealthy family ,cause reckless with greed. However, the material and sensual and meet couldnt fill the spiritual emptiness and poverty of Daisy.With the help of Nick,she meet with Gatsbyand seemed to love after. But she is not the original Daisy anymore,she is a foolish, selfish, and vulgar women .There is only a beautiful body with Daisy. The beautiful dream was finally broken. But he still have a little fantasy about daisy and because of this he suffered more sad ending. Gatsby eventually become a victim of selfish and cruel daisy.There no characters I like most ,but who impressed me most is Gatsby. Gatsby is a young man who is chasing the American dream. In order to win the girls eyes he sell bootleg liquor and no matter what danger he will rush into.he held all large-scale luxury party near Daisy day and night only cause he want to get Daisys attention .He is a extremely paranoid man.He lived a luxury and dissipation life, with this way to resist his fear of failure and death. Gatsby isnt no feeling to his own fate ,exactly he knew it already and have made enough preparation .It is because he has already been desperate, so will all the passion into absurdity.We can see something from Gatsbys experience. At that time ,the economic boom of the United States,money worship and comparisons wind was unprecedented prosperity.People at all levels of society make money by all means,even the poor loan
