To dieto sleepNo more; and by a sleep to say we endThe heartache, and the thousand natural shocksThat flesh is heir to. tis a consummationDevoutly to be wishd. to die to sleepto sleepperchance to dream: ay, theres the rub!For in that sleep of death what dreams may comewhen we have shuffled off this mortal coil, must give us pause. Theres the respectthat makes calamity of so long life. For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,Thoppressors wrong, the proud mans contumely, the pangs of despisd love, the laws delaythe insolence of office, and the spurnsthat patient merit of thunworthy takes, when he himself mighty his quietus makewith a bare bodkin? Who would these fardels bear,to grunt and sweat under a weary life, Appreciation This passage is selected from Act 3, Scene 1 in Hamlet, a tragedy written by William Shakespeare. This famous soliloquy presents an image of a weak, meditative沉思的 and melancholic忧郁的 Hamlet. In the previous Act, Hamlet had learned about the crime of his uncle from the ghost. However, due to his suspicion of the ghost and his love for his mother, he decided to perform a play to check whether his uncle was a real murderer. After Hamlet learns about the truth of his fathers death, he has been tormented by his fathers death and his mothers hasty marriage, but he doesnt know how to take revenge effectively. Therefore, he thinks of ending such troubles and pains by suicide. However, thinking of the unknown world after death, Hamlet hesitates. In his monologue in Act 3, Hamlet expressed his view on the issue of death and living. Hamlet is asking which is more preferable, to suffer in ones own mind or take a stand against the troubles. He realizes that the situation he is in now is forcing his hand to act he either must remain quiet and forget all that happened, or must work to expose and kill his uncle. Hamlets dilemma is the pain of life that he must endure or the uncertainty of death. We see that Hamlet is dissatisfied with life and lists many things that trouble him but he is not sure what death will bring him. He is thinking that the experience of death itself maybe worse than life itself. Hamlet knows that the church forbids suicide because your soul will be in eternal damnation. For Hamlet, death is an undiscovered country where no traveler returns. (补考的可能性比较大)2、THE LAMBLittle Lamb who made thee小羊羔,谁创造了你?Dost thou know who made thee你知道是谁创造了你?Gave thee life & bid thee feed. By the stream & oer the mead; 在溪流旁的草场;Gave thee clothing of delight, 给你柔软,发亮Softest clothing wooly bright; 毛绒绒的衣裳;Gave thee such a tender voice, Making all the vales rejoice: Little Lamb who made thee?Dost thou know who made thee?Little Lamb, Ill tell thee,Little Lamb, Ill tell thee!He is called by thy name,(他的名字和你一样)For he calls himself a Lamb: ,(他也称自己为羊羔)He is meek &he is mild,他既温顺又和蔼,He became a little child:他变成了一个小小孩I a child &thou a lamb,我是小孩,你是羊羔We are called by his name. Little Lamb, God bless thee.Little Lamb, God bless thee.AppreciationThis passage is selected from William Blakes poem “The Lamb”, which is included in Songs of Innocence. In the first stanza, by asking the question, “Little Lamb, who made thee”, the poet reminds the readers of the creation of the world, thus reminds us of the image of God who is the creator of all things in the world. Then, the poet gives a description of the little, gentle, and innocent lamb. This is not only a praise for the gentle, innocent creature, but also the praise for the Gods kindness in creation. In the second stanza, the poet answers the question himself. The Lamb is a symbol for Jesus Christ, the Son of God. By using symbolic language, the poet compares Jesus to a lamb and a child, because in Christianity, Jesus is compared both to a lamb going to the sacrifice and to a shepherd who protects his flock of lambs and sheep, and Bibles depiction of Jesus in his childhood shows him as guileless正直的 and vulnerable易受伤害的. (已考)3、A Red, Red RoseO, my luves like a red, red rose, 啊,我爱人像一朵红红的玫瑰,Thats newly sprung in June. O, my luves like the melodie, 啊,我爱人象一支乐曲,Thats sweetly playd in tune. As fair art thou, my bonie lass, So deep in luve am I, 我爱你是那么深切;And I will luve thee still, my dear, Till a the seas gang dry. Till a the seas gang dry, my dear,一直到四海枯竭,亲爱的,And the rocks melt wi the sun, O, I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o life shall run. And fare thee weel, my only luve, And fare thee weel a while! And I will come again, my luve, Though it were ten thousand mile! AppreciationThe passage is selected from A Red, Red Rose, a love lyric written by Robert Burns. In the first stanza, the speaker presents the beauty of his love by using two similes, the first comparing his love to a rose and the second comparing his love to a melody. The speaker also uses repetition to echo his sentiments-my luves like in lines 1 and 3; thats newly and thats sweetly in lines 2 and 4. In the second stanza, the speaker addresses the young lady as bonnie (pretty). Bonnie is derived from the French word bon (good). In the last line of the stanza, a means all and gang means go. This line is a figure of speech that exaggerates. In the third stanza, the speaker links the first line of the third stanza with the last line of the second stanza by repetition. The speaker continues hyperbole in the second and fourth lines. He also again relies on repetition in the third line by repeating the third line of the second stanza. In the last stanza, the speaker again addresses his beloved, noting that though he must leave her for a while he will return for her even if he must travel ten thousand miles. Fare-thee-weel means fare thee well. 4、She Walks in BeautyShe walks in beauty, like the night她在美中行Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all thats best of dark and bright一切明暗交织的美Meet in her aspect and her eyes: Thus mell
