See the directions for this game in the “Games” section at the back of this guide.New Concepts1. Hair.DEMONSTRATETouch your hair and the students hair as you and the classes say hair. Use pictures, yourself or the students in the class to demonstrate long/short/ straight/curly hair.Show the students different colours of hair with pictures or other examples: black, blond, brown and red. Say the words with the class as you work.STUDENT BOOK: L21 N1, 2Play the audiotape as the students follow in their books.PRACTICE IN SMALL GROUPSDivide the class into groups of about six students. Give each group some magazines. The groups cut out pictures of peoples heads showing different hair types: long, short, straight, curly, blond, red, brown or black. Each group glues their pictures on a large sheet of paper, and labels the pictures with the correct words. (For example, long hair, black hair, curly hair.)If some groups cannot find certain types of hair, such as red, blond or curly, they can draw pictures.The groups could also write speech bubbles for the cut-outs using phrase they know, such as Hello! How are you? My name is _. I am happy.ACTIVITY BOOK: L21 N1This exercise requires the students to draw hair on peoples heads according to directions. 2. Long, short, big, little. DEMONSTRATE In Chinese, explain that linear size (demonstrate with your arms) is described in English as long or short. Mass size (demonstrate with your arms) is described in English as big or little. Demonstrate big and little. You could remind the class of the difference between big and small letter ask the students when we use big letters. (For names, titles and at the beginning of sentences). Point to letters on your alphabet poster as you say This is a big/little _. Compare other big and little objects or pictures. Use phrases such as: This is big/little. Big/Little eraser/book. Is this big or little? (Encourage the class to answer.) Draw pictures on the blackboard and show object to demonstrate long and short. For example, draw a long line and a short line. Draw a head with long hair and a head with short hair. Show a long ruler and a short ruler. Encourage the class to say the words and use phrases such as: This is short/long. Short/Long. Short/Long hair. DRILL Lead the students through a question-and-answer drill that requires them to use the new vocabulary in familiar phrases. For example, draw a row of circles on the blackboard to represent faces. Draw something very big or small on each face (nose, mouth, ears, eyes). Teacher: Whats this? Class: Its a _. Teacher: Is it a big _ or a little _? Class: Its a big/little _. Teacher: Yes, its a big/little _. Say it, please.Class: A big/little _.Now add bodies to some of your faces. Draw long or short arms, legs, fingers and toes. Add long or short hair to some of the heads. Lead the class through a drill such as:Teacher: Whats this?Class: Its long/short hair or Its a long/short_.Teacher: Yes! Long/Short hair! Very good!STUDENT BOOK: L21 N3Play the audiotape as the students follow in their books.ACTIVITY BOOK: L21 N2This exercise requires the students to read the sentences about the characters.
