Unit 2 Things in the kitchen Teaching aims: 1.Master the new words, phrases and main sentences2.To be able to describe the places with the objectives 3. To be able to describe sth with the simple past tense of the verb “ to be”.Teaching points: 1. New words, phrases and sentences. 2. Using “there be”. 3. Using prepositional phrases of time and location 4. Using the simple past tense of the verb “to be”.Teaching difficulties: Using the simple past tense of the verb “ to be”. Write a short passage with the title Our kicthen.Teaching methods: direct mothed, task- basic language learningThe first periodStep1 Free talkStep2 Presentation1. Teacher brings in a bag with some screwed up paper to put in the bin, an old and a new book and various other things to put on teachers desk.2. Write or draw something on the board. Point to the board. Tell the students now the board is dirty. Then clean the board. Tell the students Now it is clean. Write the words clean and dirty on the board.3. Go to the rubbish bin. Show the students the rubbish bin. Ask Is it empty or is it full?4. Show the students the old and new books. Make sentences and write the words on the board.5. Put the other things on teachers desk untidily. Teach tidy and messy, make sentences and write the words on the board.6. Ask the students to come out and rearrange the things so that they are messy, tidy, full, empty, dirty or clean and to make sentences.7. Show Transparency. Play the Cassette and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the students to repeat after the tape.Step3 Practice1. Show Transparency. Show the students the clean and dirty kithcens. Explain that a dirty kitchen is not good. We might get sick if we cook in a dirty kithen. Read aloud or play the tape for the illustrated conversation. Ask the students to repeat the words after the teacher.2. Ask the students to take turns to make sentences about the fridge and the bin.Step4 do ex. WB P.9Tell the students to read the words in the box and look at the pictures. Revise left and right with the students by telling them Put up your hand. Raise my own right hand as I check how many have their right hands raised. Then raise my left hand and ask them Which hand is this?B. Take an object that can be easily seen from the back of the class, like a book. Place it on the students left hand side of my desk.Ask the students Is the book on the left or on the right? When the students answer confirm their guess by repeating the statement Yes, the book is on the left. Then move the book and say The book is now on the right. It was on the left. Now it is on the right.C. Repeat the procedure, using different objects and dirrerent sides of the desk. Write both a past tense sentence and a present tense sentence with Now in it on the board, e.g. The book was on the right. Now it is on the left. Get the pupils to come out and then move the book and make the corresponding sentences correctly.Step3. PracticeA. Show Transparency. Point to Tim and his mother and the clean kitchen through the doorway. Ask the students why they think Tim and his mother are tired. Tell the students The kitchen was messy. Now its clean.B. Show the small pictures and the boxes for writing numbers in. Tell the pupils to listen and write the correct numbers in the boxes. Play the tape.C. Check the answers with the pupils.D. Do ex. Make sure that the pupils are circling any mistakes in the picture. Play the tape again . Ask the pupils to compare their answers in pairs.C. Show the pupils that there are two things to do for each of the things in the small pictures. They must circle the correct verb form. They also need to write the correct words. Play the tape again.D. The pupils use the information from the picture to complete the diary entry.Step 4. Part G Listen and chant.Step 5. Do ex. Arouse interest in the passage by pointing to picture of French toast and asking Do you like this snack? You can also ask Who likes cooking ? Show the pupils the list of things they need to cook the French toast and make sure they know what each one is by checking if they can point to them in the small pictures.B. Tell the students to look at the pictures and match them with the sentences below by writing the numbers beside the sentences.C. Check the answers with the pupils.Step 4. Part H Think about it.
