Choose the best one and mark the corresponding letterwithasinglebaracrossthesquarebracketonyour machine-scoring ANSWER SHEET 1. Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: The World Health Organization says women aged 50 and older are generally in better health now than they were 20 to 30 years ago. But a new study confirms that older women in rich countries live longer than those in the developing world and the differences in life expectancy are widening. The World Health Organization says heart disease, stroke and cancers are the leading causes of death of women aged 50 years and older. But it says women in developing countries can often die from one of these problems at an earlier age. The study is one of the first to examine the causes of death of women aged 50 years and older from several rich and poor countries. It found that many women die at a young age because they live in places that lack for money to prevent, identify and treat non-communicable diseases. Colin Mathers is head of the WHO Mortality and Burden of Disease Unit. He says developed countries have the money and health systems to reduce and control heart disease. He says cancer of the cervix is one of the leading cancers among African women. He says the disease is largely preventable, but African countries have fewer resources to treat it. There is simply not enough money to provide high quality health care to everyone that is accessible. And, also a matter of human resources, that there often are not enough trained doctors and nurses and other health professionals in the country. Dr. Mathers says donors give comparatively little money to fight non-communicable diseases in African. He says most of the money goes instead 浙江专升本考前模拟考试英语 欣迈专升本浙江专升本辅导专业品牌 第 2 页 共 11 页 toward reducing the number of women dying during child birth. This has helped to bring down maternal mortality rates, but death rates among older women have increased. The study found on average, women over 50 live at least 3.5 years longer than they did 20 years ago. Older women in Japan now can expect to live 88 years. In Germany, the life expectancy rate for older women is 84. Women in many other developed countries can expect to live to age 83 or 84. But women in poorer countries die about 10 years earlier. Dr. Mathers says major risks for older women include smoking, the harmful use of alcohol, and being overweight or obese. The World Health Organization says the number of long-lasting diseases can be cut through cost-effective methods to stop common diseases. These include prevention, early identification and control of high blood pressure, obesity and high cholesterol. 1. Which is not the reason of the death of women aged 50 years and older? This passage would most probably appear in a. A. novelB. history bookC. newspaperD. guide book Passage Two Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage: Water problems in the future will become more intense and more complex. Our increasing population will tremendously increase urban wastes, primarily sewage. On the other hand, increasing demands for water will decease substantially the amount of water available for diluting(稀释)wastes. Rapidly expanding industries which involve more and more complex chemical processes will produce large volumes of liquid wastes, and many of these will contain chemicals which are noxious. To feed our rapidly expanding population, agriculture will have to be intensified. This will involve ever-increasing quantities of agricultural chemicals, From this, it is apparent 浙江专升本考前模拟考试英语 欣迈专升本浙江专升本辅导专业品牌 第 3 页 共 11 页 that drastic steps must be taken immediately to develop corrective measures for the pollution problem. There are two ways by which this pollution problem can be dwindled. The first relates to the treatment of wastes to decrease their pollution hazard. This involves the processing of solid wastes prior to disposal and the treatment of liquid wastes, or effluent, to permit the reuse of the water or minimize pollution upon final disposal. A second approach is to develop an economic use for all or a part of the wastes. Farm manure is spread in fields as a nutrient or organic supplement . Effluents from sewage disposal plants are used in some areas both for irrigation and for the nutrients contained. Effluents from other processing plants may also be used as a supplemental source of water. Many industries, such as meat and poultry processing plants, are currently converting former waste products into marketable byproducts. Other industries are potential economic uses for waste products. 6. The purpose of this passage is _. A. to alert the reader to the dwindling water supply B. to explain industrial uses of water C. to acquaint the reader with water pollution problems D. to demonstrate various measures to solve the pollution problem 7. Which of the following points is NOT INCLUDED in the passage? A. Industrial development includes the simplification of complex chemical processes. B. Diluting wastes needs certain amount of water C. Demands for water will go up along with the expanding population D. Intensive cultivation of land requires more and more chemicals 8. The reader can conclude that_. A. countries of the world will work together on pollution problems B. byproducts from wastes lead to a more prosperous marketplace C. science is making great progress on increasing water supplies D. some industries are now asking economic use of wastes 9. The author gives substance to the passage through the use of _. A. interviews with authorities in the field of water controls B. opinions and personal observations C. definitions which clarify important terms D. strong arguments and persuasions 10. The words prior to (para.2) probably mean_. A. after B. During C. before D. beyond. Passage Three Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage: It was midnight in Paris and we were rolling toward the Avenue Bosguet. As we came to the Pont Alexander III, the cab slowed down, for the traffic light was red 浙江专升本考前模拟考试英语 欣迈专升本浙江专升本辅导专业品牌 第 4 页 共 11 页 against, and then, without stopping, we sailed through the red light in a sudden burst of speed. The same performance was repeated at the Alma Bridge. As I paid the driver, I asked him why he had driven through two red lights. “You ought to be ashamed of yourself, a veteran like you, breaking the law and endangering your life that way,” I protested. He looked at me astonished. “Ashamed of myself? I am a law-abiding citizen and have no desire to get killed either.” He cut me off before I could protest. “No, just listen to me before you complain. What did I do? Went through a red light. Well, did you ever stop to consider what a red light is, what it means?” “Certainly,” I replied. “Its a stop signal and means that traffic is rolling in the opposite direction.” “Half-right,” said the driver, “but incomplete. It is only an automatic stop signal. And it does not mean that there is cross traffic. Did you see any cross traffic during our trip? Of course not. I slowed own at the light, looked carefully to the right and to the left. Not another car on the streets at this hour. Well, then! What would you have me do? Should I stop like a dumb animal because an automatic, brainless machine turns red every forty seconds? No, monsieur,” he thundered, hitting the door with a huge first. “I am a man, not a machine. I have eyes and a brain and judgment, given me by God. It would be a sin against nature to surrender them to the dictates of a machine. Ashamed of myself, you say? I would only be ashamed of myself if I let those blinking lamps do my thinking for me. Good night, monsieur.” Is this bad, is this good? Frankly I no longer am sure. I never doubted that it was wrong to drive through a red light, but now I find my old Anglo-Saxon(盎格鲁萨克 逊) standards somewhat shaken. 11.At theAlma Bridge, _. They were feared as signs warning some sad events. The very word “comet” comes from the Greek “kometes”, which means “the long-haired one.” The Greeks and Romans believed that comets were evil spirits with flowing beards. In the Middle Ages, the Church declared that comets were sent by God to punish man. An astronomer of the Middle Ages said the comet of 1531 “was the color of blood. An ugly spirit with long hair rode at its head. It looked so terrible and produced such fear in the common people that some were frightened to death and others fell sick.” These views prevailed until late into the seventeenth century, when the English astronomer Edmund Halley noticed similarity in the paths of the comets of 1456, 1531, 1607 and 1683. Halley became certain that these comets were one and the same comet turning round and round the sun like a planet. He predicted that this comet would return about the end of 1758 or early in 1759, since it had been seen regularly every seventy-five or six years. Halley himself did not live long enough to see his comet return. But his prediction proved to be correct, for on March 12, 1759 a comet was seen blazing(燃烧) across the sky. This was the first time in history that a comet had been definitely expected. Since 1759, it will return in 1985 or 1986. The comet is named Halleys Comet, after the man who accurately predicted its appearance. 16. The best title for this passage is _. A. Understanding of CometsB. Halleys Findings C. In the MiddleAges an astronomer described the comet of 1531 as _. A. something of red color B. something sent by God to punish man C. an evil spirit that would bring illness to people D. something riding the back of a bloody colored horse 20. According to the passage, the comets of 1456, 1531, 1607 and 1682 were _. A. different cometsB. the same comet C. first seen by Edmund HalleyD. named by Halley 浙江专升本考前模拟考试英语 欣迈专升本浙江专升本辅导专业品牌 第 6 页 共 11 页 Format II Directions: In the following passage, some sentences have been removed. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 22The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 23It included such items as automobile sand new houses. By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfactionthe feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human bodythis level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment.24 One this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more are spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level? A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice.25In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels. A. Then a third level appeared. B. Human wants seem endless. C. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears. D. There are several levels of wants in ones life. E.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure. F.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing. G.
