Good morning, its my pleasure to stand here to give my presentation. And this is my ppt presentation. The title of my paper is A Study of Modernity on Jude the Obscure从现代性视角看无名的裘德. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one contains the background of Jude the Obscure, the literature review and theoretical foundationmodernity as well as layout of this thesis. Jude the Obscue was published in 1895later period of Victorian age. As we all know that UK experienced a wonderful period in Victorian age, and which pushed UK to leading power in the whole world. Because of industrial revolution the country achieved abundant wealth, and the whole country immersed in such prosperity. But when it went to later period of 19th century, things became different. Industrial revolution brought about wealth as well as disaster. On the one hand, the upper class lived a luxurious life, on the other hand, the peasant and the working class lived in the opposite one. A huge number of peasants lost their land during industrialization. And most of them had to work in the factories and joined in the working class. Peasants lost their land means that their fundamental survival rights were threatened. While the working class earnings were limited and which couldnt afford for their future development. The wealth gap between the rich and the poor was broadened. Therefore, the contradiction in the inner society was sharpened. This was the social background of the novel. In fact, these can be seen as the consequences of modernity. The writer of this thesis has searched analysis on Jude the Obscure by domestic and abroad researchers. Most of them talk about the tragic factors, Hardys fatalism, and modern consciousness and so on. And this thesis will analyze the novel under modernity and expose s series of problems during modernization. Modernity typically refers to a post-traditional, post-medieval historical period, one marked by the move from feudalism toward capitalism, industrialization, secularization, rationalization, the nation-state and its constituent institutions and forms of surveillance. Chapter Two exposes social problems during modernization process. It mainly includes decline of traditional agriculture, growing wealth gap, unemployment problem and breakdown of traditional morality. Because of mechanical process, traditional patriarchal society was damaged. Orphan Jude lives in poverty, and he longs for city life where he thinks he could realize his dreamstudying in Christminster. Then, when Jude came to Christminster, he found things were different. He must earn money before he could access to the school. Therefore he works as a builder, but his job provided little income. He still lived in poverty. His domestic partnership with his cousin Sue was not accepted by the morality. Chapter Three mainly concerns the impact of modernity on human beings. Most people couldnt get rid of alienation, loneliness. They struggled in hopelessness. First, this thesis will explains impact on Jude. From country to city, Jude pursues his dreams all the time. He longs for city and then scared city. Through his whole life, Jude was adrift on the world. Second, this thesis will explain impact on the other two heroinesSue and Arabella. They embodied soul and lust. Sue was noble and charming while Arabella was a low girl. Though Sue was like an angel, she became a woman of alienation. Chapter Four analyses alienation of emotion. Interpersonal relationship became nonchalant. Jude hardly ever set up a harmonious and amicable relationship with his neighbor and workmates. Modern life made people indifferent. Their inner world was closed to others. Therefore, Judes aunt just saw him as a burden. And neighbors offered nothing but coldness. The love was also changed much. For Arabellas part, love was living guarantee, and for Sue, though she believed in true love, her alienation forced her to submit to morbid society. Chapter Five is the conclusion of the thesis. Modernization is an irresistible tendency. It brings about prosperity as well as many social problems. This thesis combined with text to criticize modernity but never negate it. We cant avoid many kinds of problems, but what we can do is to minimize them. This is the end of my presentation. Thanks for your listening. Voices In Tragic Harmony: Essays On Thomas Hardys Fiction and Poetry Jude the Obscure: A Paradise of Despair
