文档简介

Book Report The Lord of the Flies is written by William Golding, who was a British novelist, poet and playwright. He was awarded for the Nobel Prize for literature in 1983 for this novel. When William Golding was 29-year-old, he joined the royal navy. During World War II, Golding fought in the Royal Navy. He also participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-day, commanding a landing ship. At the wars end, he returned to teaching and writing. This experience influenced on his later writing. In September 1954, The Lord of the Flies was published. In this novel it told a story that take place on an isolated island. A group of boys are evacuated from Britain, where a nuclear war is going on. Unfortunately, the plane that carried the boys is crashed on an isolated island. The only survivors are the boys below age 13. Two British boys named Ralph and Piggy first appeared in this novel. They find a conch and Piggy suggests that Ralph uses it as a horn to call for any other survivors who might be nearby. Soon, other boys come to them. Ralph is voted to be the leader. At first, they all listen to Ralphs order. They set a fire, they build shelters. The harmony is broke down since the rumor that theres a beast on the island was spread among them. Jack, who is the head of a choir, soon forms a separate tribe from Ralphs because Jack believes the existence of the beast. This tribe gradually becomes more savage and they only focus on hunting. Later, Simon, a part of Ralphs tribe, is killed by other boys for being mistaken as the beast. Next comes to the death of Piggy, then Jake and his hunters try to kill Ralph. In the end of the novel, a navy officer lands on the island and his sudden appearance brings the childrens fighting to an abrupt halt. Besides reading this novel, I also watched the adapted movie. To tell the truth, I was almost going to cry when I saw the scene that Simon was killed. I felt very depressed and I spent quite a long time on keeping myself from thinking the unbearable darkness of this novel. In my opinion, all of the main figures have distinct characteristics. Id like to analyze several of them one by one. Ralph-elected chief soon after the boys plane crashes on the island. He was well educated; he was the most convinced one that they would be rescued. I think all of these are because of his family background: his father was a navy officer. Ralph struggled to maintain order. He is calm and logical. He understood things the other boys did not: the need to keep the rescue fire going, the necessity of building huts, and the need for work. He sometimes would listen to others opinions (like Piggy). Basically, Ralph it is a qualified leader because he has already tried his best to lead. For example, he once made a preparation for an assembly; when the children are obliged to investigate Castle Rock, Ralph takes the lead despite being horribly afraid of the beast. However, he is a typical dreamer not a doer, which is just the characteristic of leaders in reality. When I was reading about the scene: he disappointed found out that the signal fire had gone out when a ship passed by. This terrible thing resulted by Jack, because he summoned all of his hunters to hunt down a wild pig, including those who were supposed to be maintaining the fire. When Ralph knew this, he was so angry. At that time, I was supposing Ralph would do something even serious punishment on Jack. To my surprise, he just behaved angry and said something to Jake. He called for an assembly for this. And the result wasnt fulfilled because he just said something instead of really do something. I think thats the main reason why Jack dared to rebel against Ralph. Jack-leader of the choir turned savage hunter. From the beginning to the end, it was Jack who never believed that they would be rescued. So he only thought about hunting and having fun. This is the biggest contradiction between him and Ralph. A lot of people commented that Jack is the most evil character in this novel, however, I dont agree with it. Jacks initial idea about hunting wasnt wrong. He just desired for meat and he used his action to achieve it. Also, there is one thing that you cant deny: Ralph and Piggy didnt refuse the meat that Jack given. Compared with Jack, I think Roger is more dislikeable. Why? As you know, when the boys first arrived on the island, Roger was shy and furtive. When war broke out between the boys, he came to the forefront as the main enforcer for Jack, the boy tyrant. Rogers methods of terror and uses of torture mirror the actions of groups such as the Nazis in wartime Germany. And he is the murder of Piggy. Simon-the strangest of the boys, he was extremely shy and unable to communicate the truth about the island, the beast, and human nature. Every time he got the conch, he would fail to speak out his thoughts. He is kind. He picked fruit for the littluns and gave Piggy meat. He is my favorite part in this novel because I think Simon is totally different from other boys on the island. He is unique! Simon is the only person on the island knows the truth of the “beast”, the first one figures out that “beast” origins in peoples heart, the most tragic character in this novel. It is hard to imagine such a little boy has the courage to find out the true “beast”, the thing that others are very afraid of. And the conversation between him and “the lord of flies” predicts their future exactly. As soon as he knew the truth, he ran to tell others about it. When he got there, Jacks tribe is having a ritual. Those savage people mistook Simon for the beast. Before Simon told the truth, he was killed by others. It is irony, isnt it? I think the death of Simon symbolizes the destruction of civilization and truth. Human nature, a topic which has been discussed a
