Lao Zi used the concept of the “Dao”(Way) to explain all changes in the universe, and put forward dialectical ideas such as “Good fortune lies within bad, bad fortune lurks within good”. In aesthetics, he advocated the concepts of “Great sound is rarely heard” and “Great images have no forms”. The theory of Lao Zi exerted a great impact on the development of philosophy in China, and later scholars made use of his thinking in various ways. The Dao De Jing has been translated into many languages. Apart from its philosophical views, the moral principles standing for universal love as expressed in the following words “To honor others aged people as we honor our own; and to be kind to others young as we are to our own” are often quoted with approval by people today. Confucius (551-479BC) toured various states during the Spring and Autumn Period advocating his ideas on right conduct, in order to store up aristocratic rule. Later he devoted his energy to teaching by opening schools and enrolling some 3,000 students. Among them, 72 were noted scholars who helped compile ancient books and put his teachings into the book titled TheAnalects. For 2,000 years, Confucianism was the dominating force in the feudal society of China, exerting a significant impact on the stability and moral principles of society. Having spread toEast and Southeast Asia, his thinking became an important guiding ideology in many countries, making Confucius a world-wide thinker.Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard.26. Whats the primary thinking of Lao zi?27. What does the passage mainly discuss about Lao zi?28. What does the passage mainly discuss about Confucius?Passage Two Some nonverbal signals have several meanings. Crossed arms can indicate defensiveness, or simply a comfortable position. Touching the nose can suggest doubt in what the person I hearing. Or it could be a response to an itch or soreness from a recent cold. Likewise, an unbuttoned jacket can signify openness and cooperation. It could also be an overweight person trying to fit into an old jacket. The hitchhiking pose, arm extended with thumb pointed up, can give a negative message in other cultures. The key is that a nonverbal signal is not a complete message. Watch for a pattern of signals that all have the same meaning. The body language should match the verbal expressions. It should also match the context of the situation. So look for body language in clusters of signals with common meanings. Take the handshake for example. A handshake can be soft, firm, long, or even painful. The way you shake hands provides clues to your personality. Aggressive people have firm shake hands. Politicians typically shake your hand with their other hand covering the shake or holding your elbow. Domineering men often squeeze the hand of women during a greeting. The clever woman moves her index and little fingers in toward her palm preventing a crushing handshake. Posture is another aspect of body language. A slouch can suggest lack of interest or enthusiasm. Standing straight with your weight balanced on each foot makes look confident and relaxed. Try to stand or sit up straight; dont slouch.Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard.29. If someone touches his nose, what does it probably mean?30. What way do politicians usually shake hands?31. If some one wants to look confident and relaxed, what should he do?Passage Three An important reason why immigrants have traditionally been drawn to the United States is the belief that everyone has a chance to succeed in the U.S. Generations of immigrants from the earliest settlers to the present day have come with the expectation. They have felt that because individuals are free from excessive political and social controls, they have a better chance for success. Particularly important is the lack of hereditary aristocracy. Because titles of nobility were forbidden in the Constitution, no formal class system developed in the United States. In the early years of American history many immigrants chose to leave the older European societies, believing that they had a better chance to succeed in America than in “the old country,” where their place in life was determined largely by the social class into which they were born. There is, however, a price to be paid for this equality of opportunity: competition. If much of life is seen as a race, then a person just run the race in order to succeed; a person must compete with others. The pressures of competition in the life of an American begin in childhood and continue until retirement from work. Learning to compete successfully is part of growing up in the United States.Questions 32 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.32. What draws immigrants to America?33. In the old European societies, what largely determines peoples place in life?34. What have to be paid for the quality of opportunity?35. If a man wants to succeed in America, what does he have to learn?Section CThe civil rights laws of the 1960s helped to bring about a significant degree of assimilation of blacks into the larger American culture. Most important, the laws eventually helped to reduce the amount of white prejudice toward black people in all parts of the country. The number of African-Americans attending the nations colleges and universities, holding elective public office, and earning higher incomes increased dramatically in the late 1960s and 1970s.African-Americans are now mayors of major cities and members of Congress; they hold offices in all level of government-local, state, and national. More than 80%of whites now say that they would vote for a black for president. The bad news is that there is still a gulf between the races. Although African-Americans represent about 13% of the population, they are grossly underrepresented in Congress. The median income of a married black man working full time is 23% behind a married white man. Half of the whites in the United States live in the suburbs, but only a fourth of the blacks. Many blacks are trapped in cycles of poverty, unemployment, violence, and despair in the inner city. They are the most frequent victims of violent crime, and as many as one in five young males now have a criminal record. Over 40% of all black children live in poverty and many have only one parent. Seventy percent black children are born to unmarried woman. Some point to the destruction of the family structure as the cause of many of the social problems that African-Americans now face 参考答案Part Writing The Importance of SmileNowadays, administrators of corporations in major Chinese cities encourage employees to smile when offering customers their services. It becomes a trend that smiling-services are receiving great popularity in almost all walks of life.It is of vital importance for employees to smile to customers. On the one hand, smiles are beneficial to customers in that they make customers feel comfortable and a sense of being valued. Those smiles are like gentle wind, which makes one feel happy from the bottom of heart. On the other hand, smiles also brin
