21世纪大学英语听说第一册Unit 1Passage 1When a child enters school, he will learn many different kinds of skills. For example, he will learn to speak correctly, to read well, and to behave properly. One of the most important skills that he must acquire is good handwriting. There are two main ways in which the English language is written by hand. The first form is called printing. It looks much like the letters in a book. The letters have simple lines or curves. They are not connected. The second method of writing is called cursive. Cursive letters are slanted to one side. They are usually connected. Printing is usually learned before cursive writing. Each person has his own style of cursive writing which is difficult to copy exactly. For example, its difficult to forge a persons signature on a check or credit card bill. Some people believe that your handwriting shows a lot about your personality. The study of predicting a persons character or personality from handwriting is called graphology. Passage 2Mrs. Black was having a lot of trouble with her skin, so she went to her doctor about it. He couldnt find anything wrong with her, however, so he sent her to the local hospital for some tests. The hospital, of course, sent the results of the tests directly to Mrs. Blacks doctor, and the next morning he telephoned her to give her a list of the things that he thought she should not eat, as any of them might be the cause of her skin trouble.Mrs. Black carefully wrote all the things down on a piece of paper, which she then left beside the telephone while she went out to a meeting. When she got back home two hours later, she found her husband waiting for her. He had a big basket full of packages beside him, and when he saw her, he said, “Hullo, dear, Ive done all your shopping for you.”“Done all my shopping?” she asked in surprise. “But how did you know what I wanted?”“Well, when I got home, I found your shopping list beside the telephone,” answered her husband, “so I went down to the shops and bought everything youd written down.”Unit 21.W:Harry!
