CrushingandGrinding2002ConferencePage1CRUSHINGANDGRINDING2002CONFERENCENewDevelopmentsAndPracticesInLiftersAndLinersINTRODUCTIONThemineralprocessingindustryisinthemidstofarevolution,agrindingplantrevolution.Majorbreakthroughsinbothmetallurgicalperformanceandoverallgrindingplantavailabilityareundeniable.Thefullbenefitsofthesedevelopmentsarenotwidespread.Metallurgicalperformanceisbeingenhancedbysuperiormilloperatingmodellingbythediscreteelementmethodwhich,incertainapplications,encouragestheuseoffewer,shell-lifterrowswithhigherlifterheights.Thisresultsinlargerandheavierliners.Overallplantavailabilityandutilisationarebothenhancedbyfundamentalmillsystemsequipmentqualityandreliability(acredittomillmanufacturersandplantmaintenancepersonnel)andfaster,safer,relinetimesusingRMEsworn-linerremoval,new-liner-placementMillReliningSystem.Thispaperdefines,asRMEbelieves,thefinalfrontiersoflargegrindingmillreliningpracticeswithaparticularemphasisontheteameffortrequiredofallinterestedparties.MineralGrindingAComplexGame(offeringworthwhileprizes)Grindingplantdesign,construction,operationandmaintenanceareeachcomplexactivitieswheneachisreviewedindividually.Whencombined,thecomplexitiesmayseemoverwhelmingandsomeissuesareperhapsoverlooked,especiallyduringtheheavyworkloadofnewplantdesignandconstruction.Thispapernominatesalltheinvolvedparties(thePlayers)inasuccessfulmillreliningTeamandprovidesafoundationdocumentforfuturediscussioninthisarea.RMEwillprovidethispaper,andsubsequentupdatedversions,.auwebsites.AsinanycomplexGame,thisTeamofPlayerscombinetheirindividualskillstoachieveasuccessfuloutcome,ie.apodiumfinishintheworld-series,annual-mill-utilisationcontest.ThePlayersinaSuccessfulMillReliningTeamForagreenfieldsgrindingplantproject,theTeamplayersare:1.ProjectOwner2.ProjectManager3.MillSupplier4.LinerSupplierCrushingandGrinding2002ConferencePage25.PlantOperatingPersonnel6.PlantMaintenancePersonnel7.MillReliningCrew8.MillReliningSystemSupplier(RME)Foranexistinggrindingplantoperation,theProjectManagerhasnofurtherinfluence,reducingthefieldtoseven(7)Players.TheProjectOwnershouldhowever,nominatearemainingPlayer,probablythePlantOperator,toreviewtheProjectManagersareasofresponsibility.ThecontributionofeachPlayertotheTeamsoverallsuccessisnowdiscussedindetail.1.PROJECTOWNER1.1ThinkingbeforebuildingTheProjectOwner,theultimatebeneficiaryofworldclassgrindingplantperformance,willfacemanydecisionsregardingexpenditureofProjectCapital.OnlytheOwner,throughthosedecisions,possessesthepowertoinfluenceallotherPlayers.Somedecisionswillhaveapositiveinfluenceonthefinaloutcome.Somedecisionswillhaveanegativeeffect.Thosedecisionswilldetermineplantperformance,availability,utilisationandsafety,sometimesfortheentiredurationofthegrindingplantslife.Inotherwords,poordecisionsmayembodyirreversibleandnegativeeffectsonoperationalandmaintenanceoutcomesincludingmillrelining.TheOwnermustfirstconsidertheimportanceofgrindingplantperformanceandavailabilitytotheoverallproject.Afewoperations,notablyaluminarefineries,havebeenknowntoinstallasparemillandarethereforenotexposedtotheusualgrindingmillavailabilitydemandstomaintainthroughput.Usually,millavailabilityiscriticalandespeciallysoinamoderngrindingplantequippedwithasingle,large,primarymill.If,afterconsideration,grindingplantperformanceandavailabilityaredeemedimportant,therolesofeachotherPlayermustbeconsideredandtheirpotentialsoptimised.TheOwnerwillberequiredtoworkespeciallycloselywiththe(perhapsconservative)ProjectManager.BothOwnerandProjectManagershouldmakethemselvesawareofallrecentdevelopmentsinthisarea,eg.amovetowardsignificantlylargermilllinersmadepossible,inpart,byRMEswornlinerremoval,newlinerplacementMillReliningSystem.SimplythinkingaboutreliningissuesatthebeginningoftheProjectwillrevealmanyopportunities.Givenalittleconsideration,thefullpotentialofallotherTeamPlayerswillbereleasedateachandeveryrelineandforthelifeoftheplant.Anextra1-3%annualplantutilisation,wonthroughefficientmillrelining,istheprizeonofferforsuchthoughtatthedesignstage.CrushingandGrinding2002ConferencePage31.2AnexampleoftheconsequencesofnotthinkingattheplantdesignstageTheOwnerofProjectXYZdoesnotconsidermillreliningissuesanddoesnotbrieftheProjectManagerregardinganyparticularwishesinthisarea.TheXYZProjectManageralsodoesnotconsidermillreliningissuesandseeksgrindingmillsupplyviaaSpecificationwhichdoesnotcontainmillreliningrequirements.TheMillSuppliers(allengagedinacompetitivebusiness)seekthelowestinitialcostsolutioninordertowinthemillsupplycontract.Forsomesuppliers,theirsolutionincludesplacingthemillmotoralongsidethemillshell.Thisarrangementisvisuallycompactandappealing,promisingasmallerplantbuildingandsignificantcostsavings.TheProjectManagerawardsthesupplycontracttoaMillManufacturerofferingthiscompactarrangementanddesignsthegrindingplanttosuit.Anotherplantrequirementisathrough-plantapertureforliftingequipmentfromthegroundfloortootherplantlevels.Thisliftingwellisplacednexttothemill,denyingthemillreliningcrewaccesstothenon-motorsideofthemill.PleaserefertoFigure1
