6、nitions21pg. 3IntroductionThe term “Internet of Things” refers to a cyber-physical system composed of physical objects embedded with sensors having a unique IP to share information over a network and interact with other such devices to perform a particular task. The Internet of Things (IoT) market h

7、as grown significantly, as consumers, businesses, and governments now recognize the benefit of connecting inert devices to the internet. This resulted in manifold increase of IP portfolio and products in the IoT domain in the recent past. IoT was marked as the peak of the Gartner Hype Cycle for emer

8、ging technologies in 2014.1 Applications of IoT range from Smart Home appliances to Manufacturing and Healthcare. In the commercial space, companies can reap benefits from IoT by employing them for asset tracking, inventory control, shipping, cyber- security and energy conservation. Even though the

17、a building can be decreased with the help of pattern recognition using the data collected from the sensors. There has been a sharp increase in the development of intelligent thermostats, actuators and control systems to monitor and automate buildings. Security management has also taken a sharp rise

18、with the development of IoT, through real time remote monitoring, motion sensors and smart alarms. Integrating these devices with wearables like smartphones, smartwatches and tablets add to the applications and luxury of the technology.Devices and gadgets have been developed in the IoT space to the

19、extent that almost every choreof an average person involves one. Sensors gather data from our cellphones while we are driving to measure the flow of traffic. We can unlock cars, switch lights, control indoor temperature, and track the location of different devices remotely. Nest Labs, a Google acqui

20、red company entered the smart home segment by releasing a learning thermostat which is first of its kind in the IoT market. LG has recently launched its smartThinQ range of appliances, which are WiFi enabled, allowing the user to monitor, control, and interact with devices remotely. This is done by

21、integrating the devices with a central server, which can be accessed by an app on smartphones or wearables. 7Almost all the major tech giants have invested in R&D of IoT, realizing the importance and scopeof the domain. Companies like Intel, Samsung, Google, IBM, Amazon and Microsoft are competing t

22、o capture the space, with Intel leading the race.8 Samsung being one of the leaders in the race for IoT, recently released its new chip series called Artik in three versions, namely Artik 1, Artik 5 and Artik 10, which can be employed according to the usage and required application. Qualcomm, which

23、is one of the leading firms in IoT according to our analysis, focuses on developing back-end products (processing chips). It has showcased some of the medical products pertaining to healthcare industry in CES 2016. The company has been working on developing therapeutics and diagnostics, and has acqu

24、ired Capsule Tech, which focuses on capturing data generated by healthcare devices. 9Sony is a relatively new entrant to IoT having set up a dedicated division for the same recently,but made its intentions clear by acquiring Israel based Altair Semiconductors for $ 212 million. Altair owns modem chi

25、p technology and related software for LTE, and Sony hopes to leverage their well renowned chips by combining them with their own range of sensing technologies andwide range of wearables. 28、g. 6Cisco was on an acquisition streak in 2015, and it continued this trend in 2016 with theacquisition of Jasper Technologies in February. Jasper is a market leader in the SaaS IoT connectivity arena and the acquisition gives Cisco access to a large software portfolio and global reach to a large nu

29、mber of enterprises. Cisco is en route to becoming a one stop shop for IoT related stuff, with previous acquisitions such as ParStream (Analytics Database), Lancope, Portcullis and OpenDNS (Cybersecurity).11Intel moved early into the IoT space by launching the Intel IoT platform, a comprehensive sui

30、teof various hardware and software offerings. It recently bolstered its market presence by acquiring Altera for 16.7 billion dollars in December 2015, which is a huge manufacturer of FPGAs. FPGA processors can be customized and configured by the customers, which makes for a great start in IoT and co

31、mplements well with Intels own range of Xeon, Atom and Quark chips which it hopes to release for relevant appliances like wearables and consumer electronics.12 In 2015, Intel also launched its own IoT platform, Project Newton to help developers integrate devices with the internet and make them inter

32、operable. Intels Project Newton is one of the biggest developments in the IoT space in recent times. Intel also acquired Lantiq Technologies in February 2015 to supplement its existing portfolio in the home gateway market with telecom residential gateway and to access network products and technologi

33、es.13Although Microsoft has not made any high profile acquisitions like some of the other techmajors, IoT does feature high up on Microsofts agenda and has devoted a portion of itsimpressive workforce towards the development of the back end IoT applications. Microsoftlaunched Azure in 2010, andeptem

34、ber 2015 announced the launch of Azure IOT suite andAzure IoT hub. Using the platform, customers can use Cloud computing to monitor remotescenarios.14 Microsoft also made several purchases in the field of analytics by acquiring start-ups and smaller companies such as Metanautix, Datazen and Revoluti

35、on Analytics. Online security systems were ramped up with the addition of a couple of Israeli cybersecurity companies; Adallom and Secure Islands.15Due to factors like low market entry barrier, bright scope for future income, and marketapplicability many startups have mushroomed in the IoT sector. 36、enture funding opportunities are aplenty and companies from the US have primarily been featured because of better access to the target customers and easy access to funding. The most mind boggling aspect is the rate of

41、progress the industry has made as a whole and how it has captured the publics imagination; leading to further innovation. Thecurrent cost of commercialization and the equipment makes it very attractive for anyone looking to get returns on their investments and the enormous potential of this technolo

42、gy has attracted all kinds of companies, from older tech giants like IBM to newer players like Alphabet. Other major players like Qualcomm, Intel and Cisco have been in a tussle over manufacturing components for the gadgets being launched in the market.In our study, we have classified patents/patent

43、 applications according to the broad technologiesinvolved in IoT, such as Routing Algorithms, Access/Authentication and various kinds of ancillary equipment needed for these technologies to perform. Our research finds technologies such as Communication Protocols, Specially adapted services/Devices a

44、nd Data Security have the highest number of patents/patent applications filings with 5009, 3747 and 3198 patents/patent applications respectively, followed by Information Retrieval and Access/Authentication. Acoustics and Light guides/Optical Elements have the least number of patent filings with onl

45、y 46 and 66 patents/patent applications respectively.Table.1: Taxonomypg. 8Publication TrendThe number of patent publications per year had gradually increased from 12 in 1997 to 714 in 2010. Post 2010, the number of patent publications per year increased almost 2 folds every year. The number of publ

47、r of patents/patent applications related to Internet of Things. Based on our research, Qualcomm, Intel and ZTE contribute a major portion to the patent filings with 724, 688, and 351 filings respectively. Qualcomm has a strong portfolio in CommunicationZTE is followed by Nokia (348 patents/patent fi

48、lings), LG (318 patents/patent applications) andEricsson (270 patents/patent applications). 49、atents in our report are ranked automatically by our proprietary tool that relies on an algorithm developed by Mark A. Lemley, Kimberly A. Moore, John R. Allison, and R. Derek Trunkey in their research paper, Valuable Patents16. Historical research has proven that 97% of the litigation-worthy patent

50、s in a portfolio are found in the top bracket of patents ranked by using this algorithm.The table below shows a break-up of high strength patents/patent applications in IoT, undervarious technology areas. The majority of high strength patents filings, with 309 active patents/patent applications fall

51、 under the ambit of Information Retrieval, but this number corresponds to only 9.72% of the total filings under this technology area. Acoustics have the lowest number of high strength patents, with only 3 patents/patent applications. Character Recognition contributes majorly to high strength filings

The figure below depicts the competitive positioning of the top 20 assignees in this domain. The as

55、signees are compared on the basis of quality score, average lifetime and the number of patents in their portfolio.We use our proprietary algorithm (based on bibliographic information and claim characteristicsof an invention) to calculate the quality of inventions. The diameter of the circles represe

56、nts the relative number of filings of patents/patent applications of each company. The circles that are present in the top right region represent the assignees with portfolios which are exemplary in terms of both quality and the average remaining lifetime. Huawei is lying in the top rightregion, but

57、 its circle diameter is small as compared to that of Intel which has more average life but slightly less patent strength. Microsoft is leading in terms of average strength of the portfolio, but lacks in average portfolio lifespan. Intels portfolio has a high average lifespan, but the average patent

58、strength is very less.
