3、d my chief of staff, among others. i say that to illustrate the importan _ that the united states pla _s on our relationship with china. i would like to begin by congratulating all of you, the students, the faculty, the administrators, on _lebrating the _ntennial year of your university. gongxi, bei

(applause.) as im sure all of you know, this campus was on _ home to yenching university which was founded by american missionaries. _ny of its wonderful buildings were designed by an american architect. thousands of americans students and professors have e here to study and teach. we feel a spe

5、cial kinship with you. i am, however, grateful that this day is different in one important respect from another important oasion 79 years ago. in june of 1919, the first president of yenching university, john leighton stuart, was set to deliver the very first men _ment address on these very grounds.

6、 at the appointed hour, he appeared, but no students appeared. they were all out leading the _y 4th movement for chinas political and cultural renewal. when i read this, i hoped that when i walked into the auditorium today, someone would be sitting here. and i thank you for being here, very much. (a

7、pplause.) over the last 100 years, this university has grown to more than 20,000 students. your graduates are spread throughout china and around the world. you have built the largest university library in all of asia. last year, 20 per _nt of your graduates went abroad to study, including half of yo

8、ur _th and scien _ _jors. and in this anniversary year, more than a million people in china, asia, and beyond have logged on to your web site. at the dawn of a new _ntury, this university is leading china into the future. i e here today to talk to you, the next generation of chinas leaders, about th

9、e critical importan _ to your future of building a strong partnership between china and the united states. the american people deeply admire china for its thousands of years of contributions to culture and religion, to philosophy and the arts, to scien _ and technology. we remember well our strong p

10、artnership in world war ii. now we see china at a moment in history when your glorious past is _tched by your present sweeping transfor _tion and the even greater promise of your future. just three decades ago, china was virtually shut off from the world. now, china is a member of more than 1,000 in

11、ternational organizations - enterprises that affect everything from air travel to agricultural development. you have opened your nation to trade and investment on a large scale. today, 40,000 young chinese study in the united states, with hundreds of thousands more learning in asia, africa, europe,

12、and latin america. your social and economic transfor _tion has been even more re _rkable, moving from a closed _nd economic system to a driving, increasingly _rket-based and driven economy, generating two decades of unpre _dented growth, giving people greater _ to travel within and outside china, to

13、 vote in village elections, to own a home, choose a job, attend a better school. as a result you have lifted literally hundreds of millions of people from poverty. per capita ine has more than doubled in the last decade. most chinese people are leading lives they could not have i _gined just 20 year

14、s ago. of course, these changes have also brought disruptions in settled patterns of life and work, and have imposed enormous strains on your enviro _ent. on _ every urban chinese was guaranteed employment in a state enterprise. now you must pete in a job _rket. on _ a chinese worker had only to mee

15、t the de _nds of a _ntral planner in bei _g. now the global economy means all must _tch the quality and creativity of the rest of the world. for those who lack the right training and skills and support, this new world can be daunting. in the short-term, good, hardworking people - some, at least will

16、 find themselves unemployed. and, as all of you can see, there have been enormous enviro _ental and economic and health care costs to the development pattern and the energy use pattern of the last 20 years - from air pollution to deforestation to acid rain and water shortage. la _s and gentlemen , g

17、ood afternoon! im very glad to stand here and give you a short speech. today my topic is “youth”. i hope you will like it , and found the importan _ in your youth so that more cherish it. first i want to ask you some questions: 1、do you know what is youth? 2、how do you _ster your youth? youth youth

18、is not a time of life, it is a state of mind ; it is not rosy cheeks , red lips and supple knees, it is a _tter of the emotions : it is the freshness ; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life . youth means a temperamental predominan _ of courage over timidity of the appetite , for adventure

19、over the love of ease. this often exists in a _n of 60 more than a boy of 20 . nobody grows old merely by a number of years . we grow old by deserting our ideals. years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusia _ wrinkles the soul . worry , fear , self distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit b

20、ack to dust . whether 60 of 16 , there is in every hu _n being s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of whats next and the joy of the game of living . in the _nter of your heart and my heart theres a wireless station : so long as it re _ives messages of beauty , hope ,cheer,

21、courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young . when the aerials are down , and your spirit is covered with snows of cynici _ and the i _ of pessimi _, then you are grown old ,even at 20 , but as long as your aerials are up ,to catch waves of optimi _ , there is hope you

22、 _y _ young at 80. thank you! law opened the bottom drawer of my sisters bureau and lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. this, he said, is not a slip. this is lingerie. he discarded the tissue and handed me the slip. it was exquisite, silk, hand _de and trimmed with a cobweb of la _. the pri _ tag w

23、ith an astronomical figure on it was still attached. jan bought this the first time we went to new york, at least 8 or 9 years ago. she never wore it. she was saving it for a special oasion. well, i guethis is the oasion. he took the slip from me and put it on the bed, with the other clothes we were

24、 taking to the mortician. his hands lingered on the soft _terial for a moment, then he slammed the drawer shut and turned to me, dont ever save anything for a special oasion. every day you re alive is a special oasion. remembered those words through the funeral and the days that followed when i help

25、ed him and my nie _ attend to all the sad chores that follow an unexpected death. i thought about them on the plane returning to california from the midwestern town where my sisters family lives. i thought about all the things that she hadnt seen or heard or done. i thought about the things that she

26、 had done without realizing that they were special. im still thinking about his words, and theyve changed the weeds in the garden. im spending more time with my family and friends and letime in mittee meetings. whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experien _ to savour, not endure. im tryin

27、g to recognize these moment now and cherish them. im not saving anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special. event such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia blossom i wear my good blazer to the _rket if i feel like it. my theory is if i look prosperous,

28、 i can shell out $28. 49 for one s _ll bag of gro _ries without wincing. im not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and _ers in banks have noses that function as well as my _ going friends. someday and one of these days are losing their grip on my vocabulary. if its worth seeing or hearing or doing, i want to see and hear and do it now. im not sure what my sister wouldve done had she know that she wouldnt be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted. i think she would have call
