The pattern of the Thanksgiving _lebration has never changed through the years. The big family dinner i
6、s planned months ahead. On the dinner table, people will find apples, oranges, chestnuts, walnuts and grapes. There will be plum pudding, min _ pie, other varieties of food and cranberry jui _ and squash. The best and most attractive among them are roast turkey and pumpkin pie. They have been the mo
7、st traditional and favorite food on Thanksgiving Day throughout the years. Everyone agrees the dinner must be built around roast turkey stuffed with a bread dressing3 to absorb the tasty jui _s as it roasts. But as cooking varies with families and with the regions where one lives, it is not easy to
8、get a consensus on4 the precise kind of stuffing for the royal bird. Thanksgiving today is, in every sense, a national annual holiday on which Americans of all faiths and backgrounds join in to express their thanks for the year s bounty and reverently ask for continued5 blessings. 感恩节是美国国定假日中最地道、最美国

Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern Fran _, lived the Celts

They _lebrated their New Year on November 1st which was _de every year with a festival and _rked the end of the season of the sun and the beginning of the season of darkness and cold. 15、crops were all harvested and stored for the long winter the cooking fires in the homes would be extinguished (消失). The Druids, the Celtic priests, would meet in the hilltop in the dark oak forest (oak trees were considered sacred). They would light new fires and offer sacrifi _s of crops and ani _ls
16、. As they dan _d around the fires, the season of the sun passed and the season of darkness would begin. When the morning arrived the Druids would give an ember from their fires to each family who would then take them home to start new cooking fires. These fires would keep the homes warm and free fro
17、m evil spirits. The November 1st festival was called Samhain (pronoun _d sow-en). The festival would last for 3 days. Many people would parade in costumes _de from the skins and heads of their ani _ls. This festival would bee the first Halloween. The Celtics would carry a lantern (灯笼) when they walk
18、ed on the eve of October 31. These lanterns were carved out of big turnips (大头菜) and the lights were believed to keep the evil spirits away. Children would carve fa _s in the turnips. These carved turnips were called jack-o-lanterns. It is said that the jack-o-lantern got its name from a stingy(吝啬的)
19、 and mean old _n, named Jack, who when he _d was too mean to get into heaven. When Jack went to hell he was meet by the Devil who gave him a pie _ of burning coal and sent him away. Jack pla _d the burning coal in a turnip to use as a lantern to light his way. The legends claim that Jack is still wa
20、lking with the lantern looking for a pla _ to stay. When the early settlers came to America they found the big round orange pumpkin.
