8、l go through an interview. at its worst, an interview can be a waste of time for everyone; at its best, an interview can reveal vital information about an applicant. a skillfully conducted interview can help the interviewer determine the applicants qualifications, integrity, ambition, and ability to

9、 communicate. moreover, it can help the interviewee show his or her strengths in these same areas. lets consider some of the procedures and methods used by a recruiter in conducting an interview and by an applicant in being interviewed.interviewer responsibilities an interviewer is the link between

10、a job applicant and the company, in many respects, he or she represents the company to the applicant and therefore should know the kinds of information applicants want to know about the company. for example, applicants may seek information on salary, new product developments, career advancement oppo

11、rtunities, company attitudes toward personal life and lifestyle, and so on. recruiters have nearly the sole responsibility of determining whether or not an applicant will be considered for an available position; therefore, many of them play down their powerful role to put the interviewee at ease.str

12、ucture of the interview an interview has an opening, a body, and conclusion. interviewers usually open by greeting applicants warmly. interviewers also help promote a comfortable atmosphere by addressing individuals by name, using the correct pronunciation. a firm handshake is also beneficial for ge

13、tting things off to a good start. interviewers must be open with applicants. if they are going to take notes during the interview, they should let the applicant know why they are doing so. although warm-up questions may be helpful, most applicants are ready to get down to business immediately. as a

14、result, asking many warm-up questions may be misinterpreted. applicants may wonder about the motivation for such questions. unless the interviewer has a good reason for proceeding differently, the best advice seems to be to move into the questions right away in a warm and friendly manner. the body o

15、f the interview consists of questions that achieve its purpose. some guidelines to help interviewers through the body of the interview follow. 1. be careful of your own presentation. talk loudly enough to be heard. also, try to be spontaneous. finally, a serious question can be confusing to an inter

16、viewee if it is delivered quickly or with a smile. 2. waste no time. ask questions about things you already know only if you have some special reason for doing so. for instance, if applicants indicate employment with a particular organization but do not give a detailed account of responsibilities, q

17、uestions about what the job entailed would be appropriate. 3. avoid trick or loaded questions. applicants are always leary of questions that may be designed to make them look bad. anything that limits the applicants responsiveness will harm the interview. 4. do not ask questions that violate the law

18、. questions directed to a woman about her plans for marriage or children are not only irrelevant but also illegal. any questions about marital status, family, physical characteristics, age, or education, are illegal if this information is not deemed to be an actual occupational qualification. 5. giv

19、e the applicant the opportunity to ask questions. usually near the end of the interview, take time to see if the applicant has any questions. toward the end of the interview, the recruiter should summarize what the interview has accomplished. without the summary, both parties may be unaware of any u

20、nfinished business. interviewers should tell applicants the procedures for making the decision, when the decision will be made, and how the applicant will be notified. then, they should close the interview in a courteous, neutral manner. interviewers should neither build false hopes nor seem to disc

26、aries in these areas are young people. many of them are committed by young people who want to get a case of beer, or a few cartons of cigarettes, or some food and things of this kind not serious burglary. now weve had a number of. weve had two or three bank robberies in this area, and those have hee

27、n committed by individuals who have had some record in the past.interviewer: uh-mm.brown: now we get a certain percentage, of course, of criminals who are recidivous, and theyve been caught for committing another offence.interviewer: this is. uh.brown: that type of individual. i think . uh. uh. we h

28、ave great difficulty in dealing with. many times when a child comes into juvenile court, hes had trouble with his parents he cant communicate with his parents. his parents are almost ready to shove him outand sometimes, they have shoved them out. ive been convinced over many, many years that there a

29、re some people, probably, who should never have children. theyre simply not equipped emotionally, or educatfonally, or otherwise, to have children. really, they. they dont know how to raise children, and they produce some pretty poor products.interviewer: and you realize, possibly, that the parties

30、you should be dealing with are the parents. really, more than the children.brown: you do try to deal with, of course, these parents. sometimes, rather unsuccessfully. some of them are very hostile not only toward the childrentheyre hostile toward the court, to the system. and i think probably the sa

31、ddest cases in all the system are found in juvenile courts. because here there are youngsters who have not reached the age of discretion or good judgment, who havent been able to meet the problems of life as they have come to them. so, we talk to them about all of these things. i do, at least, talk

32、to them about their problems and about their families and i have always left the door wide open for youngsters to come in to see me personally if they havent been able to get along.interviewer: what do you do if you have a parent hostile toward the court? are there any legal recourses there? isnt th

33、ere a legal responsibility the parent has. ?brown: yes, indeed there are. the parents have a responsibility, of course, to support and take care of their children. if we find that the child is being damaged by remaining in the homeand this does happenif hes damaged remaining in the home, the parents

34、 weve had child-abuse cases. of course, we can take the child out of the home. we dont dissolve the parental relationship. we take the child out. of the home and put him in a foster home. the hope is always to get them back with their parents as soon as we can.interviewer: could even be worse, i sup

35、pose, in some cases, than the original conditions the foster?brown: one of the problems that can be developed is that the child may want to talk about whats going on. see? he may have problems. if he does have, and has no place to go to discuss thempsychologically, this is bad for the child. so, i d

36、emanded a list of every child in foster homes under my jurisdiction. and then whenever we placed someone in a foster home, we would fix a date at that timetwo months, three months or what have you, laterfor a hearing. and the child would be brought in. id have a chance to talk to the child. howre th
