Wh

2、en 15 years old ,Dickens became an apprentice in a law firm and later a civil court judge clerk and a then a new paper reporter stationed in parliament. He had only a few years school life. Charles Dickens dies by stroke on June 9,1870 and he was buried at Westminster Abbey in the Poets Corner. “He

3、was a sympathiser to the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of Englands greatest writers is lost to the world.” Charles Dickens birthplace 2 Ordnance Terrace, Chatham, Dickens home 1817-1822 Dickens was the most popular novelist of his time, and remains one of the best kno

4、wn and most read of English author. His works have never gone out of print, and have been adapted continually for the screen since the invention of cinema, with at least 200 motion pictures and TV adaptations based on Dickenss work documented. Reception Reception Many of his works were adapted for t

5、he stage during his own lifetime, and as early as 1913, a silent film of The Pickwick Papers was made. Farewell readings Between 1868 and 1869, Dickens gave a series of farewell readings in England, Scotland, and Ireland, beginning on 6 October. He managed, of a contracted 100 readings, to deliver 7

6、5 in the provinces, with a further 12 in London. Background It tells a story of two men, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton, who look similar but are very different in personality. Darnay is a romantic French ari

This novel profoundly reveal the sharpened social contradictions before the French Revolution and strongly attacked the

The theme pointed that peoples patience is limited, and the cruel rule which was made by the aristocracy will make the people resist. 12、e to his malicious step-father. He is sent to lodging school and later works in a factory , where he receives ill-treatment. He is unable to endure the dark life any longer and escapes from the factory. He finds his aunt finally through hardships. With the support of her, David continues his study a

13、nd begins his new life. His suffering childhood comes to the end. After graduate,he became a lawer and married his teachers daughter Dora But soon,Dora died of disease and David left for Australia with deep sorrow. After returning to homeland, he had become a writer and married Agenes,and from that
