3、mous detective Sherlock Holmes is un doubtedly a masterpiece of all times. ” Perhaps this is one of the most obvious expla nati ons for the un rivaled popularity of“ HolmesAsseries ” in the field of detective stories. Overwhelmed by the recomme ndati ons provided by my frie nds, I decided to take a

4、look on this Sherlock Holmes and the Duke s Sonorigi nally published by Oxford Un iversity Press.a whole, this book is abouta case concerning the Dukemissing son. Arthur, the Duke s son, was found out in a certa in morning to have disappeared, accompa nied with which was also the disappeara nee of t

5、he Germa n teacher. The school master Dr. Huxtable then turned to the famous detective of the time Sherlock Holmes for help. Realizi ng how tough and important the case is, Holmes immediately made up his mind to accept the case and followed Dr.Huxtable back to Macklet on by train. Havi ng formed a r

6、ough idea about the whole matter, Holmes probed into the case immediately and had a careful investigation of the entire area shortly after the arrival, during the process of which he discovered the body of the Germa n teacher Heidegger.Fin ally, primarily due to his prominent ability as a detective,

7、 he man aged to un ravel the mystery and obta ined the twelve thousa nd pounds promised by theDuke.Havi ng once started readi ng this ficti on, Iwas completely immersed in the mysterious story prese nted by the book. As the say ing goes,“ Well beg un, half doneAt the begi nning of the story, just li

8、ke many other detective stories, the author gives us a brief descripti on of the condition by the words of a client. However, unlike other ones, this story first delineates the client s strange behavior at length to indicate the severity of the incident in order to attract the readers to continuerea

9、ding it. As is known to all, vivid depiction is essential to detective stories since it can help the readers understand each figure s characteristics and visualize the scenes, thus making the story more authentic and attractive. Therefore, tryi ng to prese nt a“realworld ” to his readership, Sir Art

10、hur Conan Doyle, author of the original “ Holmes series ” , has skillfully arranged the plots of the whole story from the perspective of Dr.Wats on, a character not so specialized in discoveri ng the truth hidde n beh ind the eni gmatic happe nings as Holmes but so loyal to Sherlock Homes as a frien

11、d that he always accompa nies Holmes wherever he goes. In this way, he elaborately depicted every sce ne and character in the book, Apart from the special start, the ending of the whole story, being dramatic but reas on able, is certa inly an outsta nding one. After all, except the author himself, w

12、ho knows that the Duke s seemingly ordinary secr etary is in fact the Duke s bastard? In additi on, who knows that the Duke actually has already bee n acqua in ted with the whole thi ng before Holmes solves this complicated problem? Yet, surprising as it is, this ending seems so natural that it fits

13、 all the plots of the story perfectly well. While enjoying this wonderful story, I could do nothing butadmire the won derful desig n of this masterpiece as well as the author s gorgeous writing skill. Closing my eyes, I can even “see” the story happening just like watching afilm. Not until then did

14、I understand why the Japanese cartoon film Detective Conan used this“Conar” as then ame of its hero.As far as I am con cer ned, nothingis more admirable and surpris ing in the hero Sherlock Homes tha n his profo und kno wledge which has certai nly assisted him a lot when he was studying the case. Ta

15、ke the bicycle tyres for in sta nee, Holmes actually is capable of recognizing 42 different varieties of bicycle tyres.Whaf s more, according to his other stories, Holmes has studied differe nt kinds of n ewspapers, cigarettes, people s footprints and other special things as well. Therefore, he seems to have the mastery of any thi ng releva nt to the cases he deals with. Except for his illimitable kno wledge, Holmes also specializes in arranging the facts in order and then finding the
